KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's digital banking journey is making good progress and has great promise in addressing unserved and underserved segments, said Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour.
In an exclusive interview with Bernama, the central bank governor said licensed digital banks have just begun operations, with most now focusing on growing their deposit base.
"We have been seeing very good progress with deposits coming in from both underserved and unserved segments,' he said.
On the financing side, Abdul Rasheed said most digital banks have yet to fully roll out their credit products to the general public.
"In fact, the digital banks are still at the 'foundational phase', where they are subject to asset size limitations. It's still too early to come up with an assessment.
"Products are gradually being introduced, with some being offered mainly to target groups, such as staff and families, before the full public rollout.
"We will consider all the key data from the digital banks to come up with an assessment as to whether digital banks meet our ultimate aim of serving the underserved and unserved," he said.
Malaysia has five licensed digital banks, namely GXBank, AEON Bank, Boost Bank, KAF Digital Bank and Ryt Bank.
The five digital banks were awarded their licences on April 29, 2022 by BNM after being approved by the Ministry of Finance (MoF).
Of the five, four have commenced offering their products to the public, providing a range of digital financial services, including personal banking, business solutions and Islamic banking products.
GX Bank, the Grab-led digital bank, was the first to receive approval to begin operations on Sept 1, 2023.
This was followed by Boost Bank, a digital banking venture formed by Boost (Axiata) and RHB Banking Group, which commenced operations on Jan 15, 2024, and AEON Bank, Malaysia's first fully Islamic digital bank that was officially launched and commenced operations on May 26, 2024.
MoF granted KAF Digital and RYT Bank licences to commence their operations on Dec 20, 2024.
KAF Digital is the operating entity established by an Islamic digital bank consortium, comprising Carsome, MoneyMatch, Jirnexu and StoreHub, with KAF Investment Bank Bhd at the helm.
Meanwhile, YTL Digital Bank Bhd -- formed through a joint venture between YTL Digital Capital Sdn Bhd and Sea Ltd to operate as Ryt Bank -- provides a suite of services, including single-text input fund transfers and tailored financial insights, via its artificial intelligence (AI)-equipped platform. - Bernama

Regulators must uphold integrity to grow capital markets says SC

KUALA LUMPUR: Market regulators must operate with integrity and a facilitative approach to drive value creation and expand capital markets, particularly amid evolving challenges, said Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) chairman Datuk Mohammad Faiz Azmi. He emphasised that trust in fair treatment by regulators is essential for maintaining orderly markets. Mohammad Faiz highlighted the need for regulators to balance oversight with market development, avoiding excessive conservatism that stifles innovation. 'Building trust requires strong institutional frameworks. Like regional peers, we have a dual mandate: ensuring fair markets while developing them,' he stated during his keynote at the Malaysian Student Leaders' Summit. He noted the SC's role in expanding Malaysia's capital market from RM600 billion in the 1990s to RM4.1 trillion by 2023. However, he acknowledged setbacks in areas like digital assets and carbon credits, which are yet to mature. 'Our development mandate reassures the market of our growth commitment,' he added. The SC is reviewing strategies to address future challenges, including funding economic growth, inflation-beating returns, and retirement security. Medium-term priorities include climate adaptation financing and strengthening ASEAN ties post-tariff liberalisation. Mohammad Faiz also dismissed the notion that corporate failures always stem from blameworthy actions. 'Business disruptions or poor decisions often lead to downturns. For instance, only five of the original 30 Dow Jones firms from the 1930s survive today,' he concluded. – Bernama

Melaka prepares to host World Tourism Day 2025 in September

ALOR GAJAH: Melaka is nearly 90% prepared to host World Tourism Day (WTD) 2025 from September 27 to 29. State Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman confirmed that programme content, venue selection, and international delegate invitations are almost finalised. 'We are in the final stages, with only 10 to 15% of work remaining. Invitations have been sent to tourism ministers worldwide, and we expect strong attendance,' he said after officiating the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) programme in Rembia. The main events will take place at a Melaka Raya hotel for the World Tourism Conference and at Kota Syahbandar's multi-purpose performance centre for the WTD 2025 Gala Dinner and Visit Malaysia Year 2026 launch. Abdul Razak highlighted the venue's suitability, stating, 'It will showcase Melaka's cultural diversity and strategic Straits of Melaka location to global delegates.' The centre will also feature performances from all 14 Malaysian states, open to both guests and the public. Separately, he praised the WRUR programme for effectively addressing local issues in seven constituencies, including Rembia. 'Public engagement has been strong, allowing direct interaction between leaders and communities. Many complaints have been resolved, proving its success,' he added. – Bernama

AI robot pet hit in Japan as personalities vary based on upbringing

Moflin by Casio Computer Co demonstrates over four million distinctive personality traits. - Photo: Moflin/Facebook TOKYO: (Bernama-Kyodo) A fluffy robot pet equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) has proven to be a hit in Japan, as it develops its own personality and quirks depending on how it is "raised," reported Kyodo News Agency. Moflin by Casio Computer Co. demonstrates over 4 million distinctive personality traits, recognising the person who talks to it frequently as its owner. It gradually learns what the owner likes based on interactions such as petting and cuddling. "Development began with women as our target audience. We imagined a sidekick that could provide support even when you're facing issues at work or in your personal life," said Erina Ichikawa, 42, the leader of the team that developed Moflin. The project gained momentum after an engineer from the company brought in a prototype robot for the purpose of portraying the cuteness of small animals. Casio, which launched the robots in November, exceeded its target and sold over 7,000 units by March. They are particularly popular among women in their late 30s and 40s, according to the company. Ichikawa notes how some people also bring them on excursions on days off. "People can feel that their Moflins are different from other Moflins, as the robots, like animals, display individual personalities and emotions, on top of growing and having varying sleep cycles," Ichikawa said. The robots are priced at 59,400 yen ($400). The company also provides add-on services, including a so-called salon that washes and cleans the robots' fur. - Bernama-Kyodo
