Long Before Housefull 5 's Multiple Climaxes, There Was A Netflix Film That Did It
Housefull 5A and Housefull 5B. These aren't two seat numbers of the same row in a cinema hall for the movie Housefull 5. They refer to the two alternate endings of the fifth installment in the popular but oft-ridiculed comedy franchise.
This edition, directed by Tarun Mansukhani and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala of Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, won't just be a Housefull -style slapstick comedy. There's also an element of murder mystery to it.
When a billionaire (Ranjeet) is murdered on a cruise ship, three men -- played by Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, and Riteish Deshmukh -- come forward claiming to be his rightful heir, Jolly. Chaos and comedy ensue when the search for the billionaire's killer and the real heir begins.
As Housefull 5 releases in theatres today, the comedy thriller will have two climaxes with different murderers.
At the trailer launch of the film, Nadiadwala proudly declared a film with two different endings was something that hadn't "happened anywhere else in the world", adding that he was toying with the idea for the last 30 years.
"I've written a story [ Housefull ] where every theatre will have a different killer. So, if you watch it at Gaiety, it'll have one killer. If you watch it at Galaxy, there'll be another. In PVR screen number 4, you'll see a different killer, and in PVR screen number 5, yet another one. It's like every time you watch the film, you'll get a different ending," the producer had said.
But Is That So?
While two alternate endings with different murderers is a first for the Housefull franchise, which started 15 years ago, it's not a novel concept.
In 2018, streamer Netflix came out with Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, an interactive film set in the dystopian sci-fi thriller world of Black Mirror anthology series franchise. It was directed by David Slade and penned by Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker.
Set in 1984, the movie followed a young programmer named Stefan Butler, played by Fionn Whitehead, who is adapting a fantasy gamebook into a video game.
And, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch had not two, but many, many endings. How so? Its interactive medium film gave the viewer the agency to make decisions for the protagonist. They chose what happened to Stefan - whether he accepts or rejects help from the game company in developing the game, or whether he jumps off the balcony or not.
However, Bandersnatch wasn't the first of its kind either. In the past, Malayalam film Harikrishnans (1998) and Hollywood movie Clue (1985) released in theatres with different endings. Bandersnatch, however, gave the viewer the power to decide the end.
This Netflix film received mixed reviews with much debate over the extent to which the viewer's decision influenced the story's narrative and subsequent outcome.
But when have reviews ever been a concern for the Housefull folk.
Its budget, crassness of jokes, and also box office collections have only increased over the years. The last film, Housefull 4 was mounted on a budget of Rs 150 crore and it managed to collect over Rs 280 crore at the ticket windows.
As for Housefull 5, you can choose your poison - Housefull 5A, Housefull 5B, or, maybe both?

With this, the film's total earnings have surged past Rs 50 crore, currently standing at an estimated Rs 54 crore. In comparison, its predecessor, 'Housefull 4' crossed the Rs 50-crore milestone only on its third Day 2, the film recorded an overall Hindi occupancy rate of 37.97 percent, with the highest footfall observed during the night shows. 'Housefull 5' also outperformed Akshay Kumar's January release 'Sky Force' (Rs 11.50 crore nett) and last year's Bollywood blockbuster 'Fighter' (Rs 22.50 crore nett) in terms of opening day by Sajid Nadiadwala's banner, Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, the film boasts an ensemble cast featuring Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Fardeen Khan, Nana Patekar, Jackie Shroff, Jacqueline Fernandez, and Today Digital's review of 'Housefull 5' notes, 'The good thing about 'Housefull 5' is that it looks like a nice commercial entertaining package. But, it's not for everyone's taste. The cringe comedy, where creepy men are lusting over women's bodies and making jokes out of beating birds and monkeys, does not make for very heartening humour. It also feels artificial at one point, as if the audience is being forced to throw a chuckle here and there.' IN THIS STORY#Akshay Kumar#Abhishek Bachchan#Riteish Deshmukh#Sanjay Dutt

‘Shah Rukh Khan is probably the one I know the most and really enjoy working with': Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos
It's no surprise that Shah Rukh Khan is a great host. Members of the film industry, from budding actors to seasoned filmmakers, have often heaped praises on how special Shah Rukh makes one feel at home despite his towering stature. A recent addition to this list of Shah Rukh Khan admirers is Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos. When asked if he has a favourite creator in India, Sarandos clarified that he works with so many that it's unfair to pick one, just like you can't pick your favourite child from all your babies. 'But I have to tell you, early in coming to India, I met Shah Rukh Khan right away. He hosted a very nice little dinner for me, and we just hit it off immediately,' revealed Sarandos. He added on Nikhil Kamath's podcast how he and his wife have had 'nice times together' with Shah Rukh Khan whenever they've visited India hence. 'We visited each other in Los Angeles when his son was in school. So having dinner with Shah Rukh Khan in India is much different than having dinner with him in Los Angeles. I'd say that's probably someone I know the most and really enjoy working with,' added Sarandos. Shah Rukh Khan's elder son Aryan Khan studied fine arts in film and television production at the University of South Carolina in Los Angeles. He graduated back in 2020. Aryan will now make his debut as the creator, writer, director, and showrunner of the show The B***ds of Bollywood, which is produced by his father's banner Red Chillies Entertainment, and will stream on Netflix India this year. 'I've watched the first two episodes so far. It's very funny. I think people in India and people outside of India know nothing about the inner workings of Bollywood. So it's a really fun world. He's (Aryan) a very good director,' said Sarandos on The B***ds of Bollywood. While the details of the cast of the show is kept under wraps, its synopsis on Netflix states: 'In this high-stakes drama, an ambitious outsider and his friends navigate the chaotic, larger-than-life, yet uncertain world of Bollywood.' The B***ds of Bollywood isn't Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment's first collaboration with Netflix India. Previously, they've teamed up on Ribhu Dasgupta's 2019 spy thriller show Bard of Blood, starring Emraan Hashmi, Kriti Kulhari and Vineet Kumar Singh, and Patrick Graham's 2020 zombie horror show Betaal, starring Singh and Aahana Kumra.
