There's a good reason why the social media ban won't work, and the government knows it
Trying to access Facebook or Instagram while on school grounds returned only an error message. But the grown-ups in charge hadn't kept up with the meteoric rise of the blogging platform that peaked in popularity in 2014. It was open season.
The teachers couldn't have known their selective ban would allow us to dedicate more time to our craft. One of my classmates quickly ascended to the status of 'Tumblr-famous', landing a modelling contract. Tens of thousands of unsuspecting followers relished nuggets of life and style advice dished out from the Year 8 homeroom.
And because girls shouldn't have all the fun, I'm reliably informed that X, then known as Twitter, was at the same time experiencing an unlikely surge in sign-ups from young men trapped in the ivory towers of private school boarding houses.
Porn sites were blocked. The social networking platform that happily hosts graphic content was not.
As recently pointed out by The Sizzle tech newsletter editor Cam Wilson, it's comical that most Australian parents, the very people the government seems to be appeasing with its kids' social media ban, believe X is an appropriate space for minors. You only have to open the app once in an open-plan office to learn what you can be exposed to with a wayward scroll.
'Unsuspecting followers relished nuggets of life advice dished out from the Year 8 homeroom.'
At another Sydney school, boys were rumoured to have uploaded adult images of my underage peers to a communal Google Drive. Who needs social media at all?
Children will always find a way to circumnavigate your online roadblocks because they know the terrain better than you – or I, as a geriatric Gen Z – do.

Kylie Jenner and Timothee Chalamet spark split rumours
Fans are speculating Hollywood 'it' couple Kylie Jenner and Timothee Chalamet may have gone their separate ways. The ultra-private pair, who have been dating for two years, didn't appear to celebrate the US reality star's 28th birthday together at the weekend, and have not been spotted together in over a month. Sharing a series of racy photos of herself on Instagram, Jenner could be seen wearing a black bikini and holding a glass of red wine at her sprawling mansion in Los Angeles. While the pair don't usually post about one another online, it was Jenner's sad song choices to accompany photos re-shared on her Instagram stories that had fans talking, with one being Jeff Buckley's Lover, You Should've Come Over, which features the lyrics: Maybe I'm too young / To keep good love from going wrong / Broken down and hungry for your love / With no way to feed it / Where are you tonight, child? / You know how much I need it. Another song she cryptically shared was the 1972 track Crying Laughing Loving Lying by Labby Siffre, which describes a painful break-up. Crying never did nobody no good no how / That's why I don't cry / Loving never did me no good no how, no how / That's why I can't love you now. Meanwhile, Chalamet shared a famous photo of boxing great Muhammad Ali on his Instagram stories Sunday, which coincided with Jenner's birthday. 'Dream big,' he simply wrote atop the image, which is likely a reference to his upcoming film Marty Supreme. The pair were first romantically linked in April 2023 after Jenner's car was spotted parked in the Wonka actor's driveway. Days later, they were filmed kissing while in the crowd at the US Open. Since then, they have been spotted out and about together several times, and Jenner was by his side at several of his award show season events including the Golden Globes in January and the Oscars. While she supported the actor inside the film events, it wasn't until May that they made their red carpet debut as a couple. The duo posed for photographers in front of the step-and-repeat at the David di Donatello Awards in Rome — where the Call Me By Your Name star received the David for Cinematic Excellence honorary award. Chalamet didn't attend Jeff Bezos' lavish wedding to Lauren Sánchez in Venice in June. Jenner was instead seen with her sisters Kendall Jenner, Khloe Kardashian and Kim Kardashian.

Guy Sebastian's son Archie reveals impressive vocal talent while singing KPop Demon Hunter's hit Golden
Singer Guy Sebastian's 11-year-old son Archie has clearly inherited his father's impressive vocal talent. In a new video posted on the youngster's Instagram account — managed by his mum, Jules — on Saturday, the budding artist showed off his singing skills. Belting out Golden from hit Netflix animated film KPop Demon Hunters, Archie's performance drew hundreds of comments from people blown-away by his performance. And it seems Archie is an Insta-hit, with a slew of fans and celebrities praising his incredible voice. 'Wow (with fire emojis),' Australian Idol host and singer, Ricki-Lee commented. 'The man. Just awesome Arch,' radio host Michael 'Wippa' Wipfli posted. This is Archie's first solo performance on Instagram. Loading Instagram Post Proud dad Sebastian has been working with Archie on his music. In May, the Australian Idol winner shared a video of them duetting on his new song Maybe. In the clip Archie, who wrote his own lyrics, is singing as Sebastian plays the guitar in the background. 'My son is like a weapon — he's a proper weapon singer!' Sebastian proudly said on The Hit Network's radio show The Pulse With Seany B in April. 'He wrote this song recently for his grandpa who died, my wife's dad, and we were bawling our eyes out.' 'It was the night before the funeral and he said, 'Dad, I've written this song for Poppa, called Convince You To Stay.'' Going on to play the song, the 43-year-old explained his son hears 'chords' and 'every melody' in his head and is able to sing, write music and play the guitar. 'His intuition and his sensitivity is crazy — he knows how to deliver. He's such an emotional kid,' Sebastian added. Sebastian spent six seasons as a coach on hit reality TV series The Voice, which returned on Sunday, making him the perfect mentor for his son. In October last year, the singer-songwriter announced he was stepping back from the role to concentrate on his own music. 'I have made the decision to take a break from the best red chair on the planet. It's been six amazing years as a coach and it's honestly been the best gig ever!' Sebastian shared on Instagram at the time. 'I have nothing but good things to say about the show itself, and sharing the panel with such amazing coaches has been a pleasure. 'It's been a privilege to guide the next wave of Aussie talent alongside the wonderful teams and crew at @channel7 & @itvstudiosaus! 'The best thing about the show is how positive it is and how much care and passion goes into making it a safe place for artists.' Sebastian, who also shares 13-year-old son Hudson with wife Jules, celebrated the launch of his new album 100 Times Around The Sun in Adelaide, South Australia, on Sunday. 'My home town!! Adelaide it was so wonderful to celebrate the launch of my album with you absolute legends, thanks for coming out and grabbing an album. I love you all,' he posted. Sebastian will kick off his Australian tour in April 2026.

Em Rata on her hot girl summer in racy bikini shoot
Emily Ratajkowski has been soaking up the European sunshine on luxury yachts and posing up a storm in tiny bikinis that only just cover her modesty. The 34-year-old US model and author took to Instagram at the weekend to share a series of photos from her travels in Italy with loved ones, including her son Sly. The first photo in her post was sure to capture attention as the influencer showed off her figure in a barely-there leopard print bikini while standing on the edge of her villa's infinity pool that looked out to scenic, cliff-side views. In another photo, Rata wore a different tiny red and blue striped bikini paired with matching hot pants as she enjoyed a yacht day swimming and snorkelling. She continued her swimsuit parade with a selfie that showed off the front of her plunging leopard print bikini, which she accessorised with dainty gold chain necklaces, Gucci sunglasses and a baseball cap. Other images showed Rata enjoying a yacht cruise, feasting on seafood and diving into pretty blue waters. Friends and fans took to the comments section and hyped up the London-born, California-raised star. 'You're so hot,' one fan said. Another added: 'A gorgeous little piece of perfection.' 'These outstanding pictures go beyond the word beautiful, just mesmerising, especially the opening one of you Em with you're body posed like a life-like temple,' a third fan added. Em Rata stayed at a historic villa in Positano, situated on a beautiful hill of the Amalfi Coast. Credit: Supplied The photo dump comes shortly after Rata was spotted showing PDA with former lover and entrepreneur Orazio Rispo while swimming off the Amalfi Coast. While the model recently told Elle UK in June that 'straight men' are not a part of her inner circle, it appears the pair rekindled their romance after they were previously seen kissing in 2022. In other news, Rata is set to make her screenwriting debut for a new Apple TV+ series that explores female identity and early motherhood alongside Lena Dunham.
