Friday briefing: Wayne Rooney hits back at ‘very unfair' Tom Brady

Glasgow Timesa day ago
There has been plenty of movement in the transfer window with Newcastle and Nottingham Forest lining up moves.
Rooney hits back
Wayne Rooney claims Birmingham minority owner Tom Brady's criticism of him during his spell as the club's manager was 'very unfair'.
Rooney, sacked by Birmingham in January 2024 after less than three months in charge, said he was 'really disappointed with the comment' on his new podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show, which launches on Friday.
NFL great Brady, who became a minority shareholder at Birmingham in August 2023, said he was 'a little worried about our head coach's work ethic' during a documentary after visiting Blues' training ground the following November.
Speaking via his new show on the BBC, the ex-Everton and Manchester United striker said: 'I think Tom came in once, which was the day before a game where the days are a little bit lighter anyway, and I don't think he really understood football that well.
'But what he does understand is – he's a hard worker – we know that.'
Rooney added: 'Football is not NFL – NFL works for three months a year. Players do need rest as well, so I think he's very unfair, the way he's come out and portrayed that.'
Men on the move
Jacob Ramsey is set to join Newcastle (Zac Goodwin/PA)
Newcastle have agreed a fee for Aston Villa winger Jacob Ramsey.
The 24-year-old is due to travel to the north east for a medical after a deal in the region of £40million was agreed, the PA news agency understands.
The prospective sale of Ramsey, who has made 167 appearances at Villa Park, will represent pure profit for Villa, who are walking a UEFA financial fair play and PSR tightrope and need to sell.
Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest have agreed a £30million fee for Manchester City's James McAtee and a club-record £37m deal for Ipswich forward Omari Hutchinson.
Kick It Out want action
We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night's UEFA Super Cup defeat.
Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards – hiding behind anonymous… pic.twitter.com/rOF1WYeos4

Anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out says players may think twice about taking penalties in future after Tottenham's Mathys Tel received online racist abuse.
France Under-21 international Tel is the latest player to be targeted on social media after he missed a spot kick in Wednesday night's UEFA Super League penalty shoot-out defeat to Paris St Germain.
A Kick It Out statement read: 'If you're a black player, it would be totally understandable to think, 'Why would I want to take a penalty?' That's the state of the game right now, and the sad fact is, it's nothing new.
'Players are routinely targeted with racism online and want action; we want action, too. Accountability from offenders and social media companies is a baseline, but it's not being met.'

The Premier League returns with champions Liverpool kicking off the new campaign against Bournemouth.
It is sure to be an emotional night at Anfield as the club pay tribute to Diogo Jota following the forward's tragic death in the summer.
A host of managers will face the media, with Pep Guardiola, Ruben Amorim, Thomas Frank and Enzo Maresca among those speaking.

Newcastle to make desperate last-ditch attempt to solve Alexander Isak and Liverpool saga

Alexander Isak is attempting to force through a move to Liverpool this summer, but Newcastle boss Eddie Howe remains hopeful the striker could stay at St James' Park Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has revealed he may make another attempt to persuade Alexander Isak to stay. Isak is holding out for a move to Liverpool and is set to miss Newcastle's first game of the new Premier League season as a result. ‌ However, Howe has refused to rule out the possibility of the striker playing for Newcastle again. When asked if there is a way back for Isak, Howe told reporters: "Yes, I believe there is. But, of course, discussions and talks would need to take place for that to happen. ‌ "But, again, that's for another day. Today is Aston Villa and making sure we perform as well as we can. I understand why your questions are filled with that subject but it doesn't really help us at this moment." ‌ However, he also conceded that the ball is very much in Isak's court when asked if there is a chance the 25-year-old will return to action before the transfer window shuts, Howe replied: "I don't know. "As I sit here now I don't know that. Alex will control that. "You want to see him with the squad, you want to see him happy and enjoying his football. He is contracted to us. He is here, so for me that (him training alone) is an unfortunate situation. "Me and Alex have enjoyed a great relationship and I don't think he'd have done as well as he's done without that, and without his teammates and the supporters and the backing of the whole football club, "He recognises that as well. He's a highly intelligent person and he knows he wouldn't have the success here without everybody connected with Newcastle. This is a different moment for him and us and we're working through that together." Newcastle are set to fine Isak for refusing to feature against Aston Villa, with Howe admitting that the saga has had a major effect on the club's preparations for the new season. "I don't think it's been healthy for us," he said. ‌ "I don't deny that's been a big challenge. Alex, for me, is one of the best strikers in the world - if not the best. To miss him from your squad leaves a huge gap. When you have a player that good who is not part of your group, it's difficult for the players to fully understand it and to know what's going on and how to react. "But, as time has gone on, there has been an acceptance this is the squad and we have got to make the best of the situation. That's always been my train of thought. "Whatever situation you're in, you have got to find a way and you can only control what you can control. We have moved forward and I've got to say the atmosphere of the group has been very good in the last couple of weeks." Aston Villa vs Newcastle United predictions: Premier League tips and odds

Our expert has two tips for Saturday's Premier League clash between Aston Villa and Newcastle at Villa Park (kick-off, 12.30pm). We think Unai Emery's men can start their season with a win. Match details What: Aston Villa vs Newcastle, Premier League Where: Villa Park When: 12.30pm, Saturday August 16 How to watch: TNT Sports 1/TNT Sports Ultimate Villa to overpower unsettled Magpies Knee-jerk reactions to transfer business are best avoided when it comes to making predictions for the season ahead and Newcastle will probably perform better under Eddie Howe than many think, despite a poor summer. That said, they could be vulnerable in this opener against Aston Villa, who are a nice price to win at 6/5. Newcastle will, of course, be without star striker Alexander Isak for this game. The Swede is keen to leave the club and his absence has surely unsettled the existing group. Their win percentage in all competitions with Isak was 61 per cent last season, but that dropped to 43 per cent when he was not available. Anthony Gordon could be given the task of leading the line. But the main thinking behind this bet is that Aston Villa look in good shape. Former Brest goalkeeper Marco Bizot is a decent stand-in option for the suspended Emiliano Martinez, while Morgan Rogers has been in training and looks likely to feature behind Ollie Watkins in a pretty settled line-up. New signing Evann Guessand looks like a good attacking option from off the bench and Villa were at their best in front of their own fans last term, winning 11 of their 19 league fixtures at Villa Park. Indeed, they have won their last eight games on their own turf in all competitions and can draw confidence from having hammered Newcastle 4-1 in the Midlands as recently as April. Booking beckons for card magnet Joelinton I get the sense you will not see Joelinton much bigger than 2/1 to be booked in any Premier League game this season and those odds are worth snapping up at Paddy Power this weekend. The Brazilian has become an integral part of the Newcastle midfield under Howe but picked up 10 yellow cards in the Premier League last season, while only Fulham's Sasa Lukic (2.2) averaged more fouls per game than Joelinton (2.0). He was booked in both meetings with Villa last season, including in what was a comfortable 3-0 win for his side last Boxing Day. The referee for this weekend's game is Craig Pawson, who sent off Newcastle's Fabian Schar in the club's 2024-25 opener and averaged 4.32 yellow cards per game last season.
