BJP slams Congress over X poster of ‘missing' PM

Indian Express29-04-2025
The BJP Tuesday targeted the Congress over a social media poster, later deleted, that depicted PM Narendra Modi as 'missing' from action in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack.
The poster on the Congress's X handle, captioned 'zimmedari ke samay Gayab (missing at a time of taking responsibility)', showed a pair of kurta-pyjamas and footwear without the PM's body.
This prompted the BJP to claim in a post on X: 'Congress flaunts a headless kurta to echo the extremist 'Sar Tan Se Juda' slogan, exposing its continuous slide into Muslim League 2.0 — divisive, desperate, and directionless. Now that PM Shri @narendramodi has spoken the only language Pakistan understands, Islamabad's official handles are parroting the same beheading cry, laying bare their jihadist creed.'
The Congress handle deleted the post after the row flared up.
BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh asked the Congress if it had become 'a PR wing' for Pakistan. 'In moments of national pain, Congress turns into a party of a hundred voices, each more disconnected from national interest than the last. The question now is simple – whose side is the Congress on?'
BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia, dubbing the party 'Lashkar-e-Pakistan Congress', alleged that it was under the direction of Rahul Gandhi that 'certain posts are made, posts that not only shame the nation but also deeply hurt its people'.
'This is part of Congress' attempt to weaken India at a critical time and send signals to Pakistan… The ideology of 'Sar tan se juda' reflects not only Pakistan's mindset but also aligns with that of the Congress,' he said.

India confident of meeting fiscal deficit target, despite tax cuts

India is confident of meeting its fiscal deficit target of 4.4% for the current fiscal year, according to a government source with knowledge of the matter, despite its plans to cut consumption tax later this year. In the biggest tax overhaul since 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced sweeping changes to the complex goods and services tax (GST) regime which will make daily essentials and electronics cheaper. "India's federal and state governments have options to offset any loss of revenue due to lowering of rates," the government source said without providing further details. The source also said it will end the practice of collecting compensation cess by December. The GST compensation cess is an additional levy imposed on certain items to compensate states for any revenue loss incurred due to the implementation.

‘Onus on EC': Bengal BJP begins ‘no SIR, no vote' campaign

Kolkata: A day after announced that special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls would commence in West Bengal, state BJP began campaigning for "No SIR, No Vote". "We are demanding 'No SIR, No Vote'. The more Trinamool puts up hurdles in the way of SIR implementation, the more time it will take to complete the process. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now You can imagine what impact it will have on the forthcoming assembly polls," state leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari said on Monday. Pointing out that the state govt took charge on May 5, 2021, Adhikari said the present govt's tenure will end on May 4, 2026. "A newly elected govt will have to be formed by May 4, 2026. Otherwise, there are constitutional provisions for such a situation," he said. Bengal BJP said that intensive revision or SIR was nothing new in the state. It was done in 2002 and nearly 26 lakh names were deleted during the exercise. "The Election Commission has minced no words to say that SIR will be rolled out at the right time in Bengal. It has also said that the revision of rolls is to clean the voter list," said a Bengal BJP neta. "We don't want to boycott the vote and the responsibility of SIR is on Election Commission. If Trinamool tries to stall the process of SIR, that will be considered a total breakdown of the constitutional machinery. The custodians of the Constitution should then think where and when to interfere," Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said. "It is quite clear that TMC wants an erroneous voters' list. They want dead voters and duplicate voters' names to be there as it helps them. They want names of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh to be there. Trinamool has facilitated their Aadhaar cards and EPICs. This is an easy ploy for them to use those voters multiple times during the phases," said Shankar Ghosh, BJP's chief whip in the assembly. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Bengal BJP has already submitted a list of 17 lakh "fake voters" with ECI and hinted at submitting more names. Later on Monday, a team of BJP MLAs met governor CV Ananda Bose. "Haryana Police detained a total of 1,000 migrant workers for questioning. All of them are Bengali-speaking. However, 915 of them are Bangladeshi Muslims who speak Bengali. All of them were illegal infiltrators," Adhikari said while coming out of Raj Bhavan.

SP produces affidavits of 2022; accuses CEC of 'lying brazenly'

NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party Monday accused the CEC of "lying brazenly" that the party had not given any affidavit on the deletion of voters in Uttar Pradesh, even as Akhilesh Yadav alleged targeted deletion of backward and most backward class voters, who back SP, at the behest of the governing party. As the row over voter deletion deepened Monday, SP affidavits became the opposition's propaganda weapon with INDIA bloc MPs holding them up during the protest against SIR of electoral rolls in Bihar and Election Commission at the Parliament entrance ahead of proceedings in the morning. SP leader Ramgopal Yadav said EC was "lying" about the affidavits, saying they were filed for 2022 state polls, while complaints were submitted about UP bypolls, including in Mainpuri. Akhilesh distributed copies of the affidavits around in Parliament complex, asserting that 18,000 complaints on stamp papers were submitted to EC in a rush after he received an EC notice asking that he support his claims about voter deletion in the 2022 state elections. Seeking to turn the row into a political weapon, Akhilesh alleged that voters from most backward groups like Maurya, Pal, Baghel and Rathore were being removed from rolls to help BJP. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Passive Income Ideas Sitting at Home Mone Click Here Undo "They remove their names while promoting the narrative that OBCs are voting for them (BJP)," he said, adding that deletions played a role in SP's defeat in many narrowly decided seats. "This is what we could identify in a short time. If we receive the voter lists in the format we are asking for, we can provide more such cases. Votes cast in 2019 were deleted by 2022. There is also a proper procedure for creating a voter ID but that is being ignored," he alleged. At the same time, SP leaders alleged that SDM officers who conduct the elections are deliberately picked from "the community of the chief minister" while those seen as belonging to communities that support SP are changed. The Samajwadi chief said EC has not taken any action on its complaints filed since 2019 spanning across polls in 2022 and 2024, and not a single officer has been punished despite the petitions after BJP came to power. "It means EC listens more to BJP," he charged.
