Aston Villa to take on European giants Roma at 11,300-seater EFL stadium as bizarre friendly is announced

ASTON VILLA will take on Italian giants Roma in a pre-season friendly at a tiny EFL stadium.
Unai Emery's men are currently on holiday following their sixth-place Premier League finish and run to the Champions League quarters.

But they will be eager to hit the ground running in August after missing out on Champions League qualification.
And Villa have a host of friendlies lined up, starting with a clash against Midlands rivals Walsall at the Bescot Stadium.
They then take on Hansa Rostock in Germany before travelling to America for games with Eintracht Frankfurt, St Louis City and Nashville.
Villa will then return to England where they will host Roma on August 6.
But the match will not be taking place at their home stadium of Villa Park.
Instead, Emery's team will face Roma at the home of rivals Walsall.
The Bescot Stadium, where Villa are starting their pre-season, holds just 11,300 fans.
There has been no explanation as to why the match will take place there.
But it is likely that Villa will be making final preparations to their pitch and arena before the start of the new Premier League season on Friday August 16.
Villa Park will host four concerts throughout the summer, which will require plenty of maintenance to set up and then dismantle.
Jack Grealish has gone from eye-catching showman and heartthrob to miserable bench warmer - and I know who's to blame

Veteran rockers Guns N' Roses kick things off on June 23, with pop star Chris Brown performing three days later.
Saturday July 5 then sees metal legends Black Sabbath play their final-ever show.
And the last concert takes place on July 10 with a performance from Kendrick Lamar and SZA.
Fans reacted with confusion to the announcement, with one saying: 'Tell them to use their own ground.'
Another declared: 'Absolute criminals.'
One noted: 'State of it.'

David Coote charged by FA over foul-mouthed Jürgen Klopp comments

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been charged by the Football Association in regards to comments he made about Jürgen Klopp. Coote was suspended from his role by Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) in November after a video leaked online showing him making foul-mouthed comments about Klopp. The 42-year-old was sacked the following month after a second video, published by the Sun, allegedly showed him sniffing what appeared to be white powder. 'David Coote has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to comments that he made about Jürgen Klopp in a video recorded around July 2020 which appeared on social media in November 2024. It's alleged that the referee acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words contrary to FA Rule E3.1,' read a FA statement. 'It's further alleged that this constitutes an 'Aggravated Breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference – whether express or implied – to nationality. Coote has, however, been cleared of any gambling misconduct following claims he discussed issuing a yellow card to a player before the match in question. Coote denied the allegations, describing them as 'false and defamatory'. Coote was banned by Uefa in February from officiating in European competition until 30 June 2026. The previous month he said struggles with his sexuality contributed to the 'really poor choices' that cost him his job.
