BJP MLA suspended from Bengal Assembly amid ruckus over Mamata Banerjee's speech

India Today6 hours ago

West Bengal Assembly witnessed high drama on Monday after BJP MLA Manoj Kumar Oraon was marshalled out and suspended for a day for allegedly disrupting proceedings of the House. The incident unfolded moments after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee concluded her address on SC/ST reservations and alleged discrimination by the Centre in allocation of funds to Bengal.Chaos erupted as BJP legislators began protesting inside the House, prompting heated exchanges between members of the BJP and the ruling Trinamool Congress. Oraon was removed by marshals on the Speaker's orders, as the situation escalated.advertisementIn her speech, Mamata Banerjee asserted that Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes from Hindu communities continue to enjoy reservations in Bengal, while only Muslims are not included in the OBC list.
"Socially backward groups recommended by the Supreme Court are in the OBC list. Funds due to Bengal are not being released. If an incident occurs in Bengal, hundreds of commissions are sent. But what about Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan?" she questioned, accusing the Centre of double standards. The Chief Minister also condemned BJP MP and Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar for allegedly hurling slippers at a Punjabi man during a protest in Kolkata's Kalighat area two days ago. Majumdar had been demonstrating against violence in Maheshtala and was briefly detained by police."Half these BJP ministers should open a hawai chappal shop,' Mamata quipped sarcastically, referring to the incident. She further predicted a complete wipeout for the BJP in the next Assembly elections. "The way you are humiliating me, I believe you will become zero in 2026," the Chief Minister said.advertisement

Four NPP MLAs defect to PPA in Arunachal

Itanagar: Four legislators of National People's Party (NPP) have formally defected to People's Party of Arunachal (PPA), according to an official notification issued by the state legislative assembly on Monday. The switch was executed under Rule 4 of the Members of Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly (Disqualification on Grounds of Defection) Rules, 1987 and has been notified in the Arunachal Pradesh Gazette. The MLAs who crossed over to PPA are Namgey Tsering (Tawang), Pesi Jilen (Liromoba), Tapi Darang (Pasighat East) and Oni Panyang (Mariyang-Geku). All four had submitted fresh Form-III declarations on May 12, 2025, notifying their change of party allegiance from the NPP to the PPA. They were elected on NPP tickets in the 2024 assembly elections. The notification regarding the change was issued by assembly speaker Tesam Pongte. With the latest realignment, the PPA — Arunachal's only recognised regional party founded in 1977 — now has six members in the 60-member assembly. BJP continues to maintain its dominant position with 46 seats. NPP, which emerged as the second largest party in the April 19 assembly polls last year, now has only one MLA — Longding-Pumao legislator Thangwang Wangham. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) holds three seats, while Congress and Independents have one and three seats, respectively. The development is seen as a boost to PPA, which shares ideological proximity with ruling BJP. Political observers believe the defection could further bolster the BJP-led coalition's strength in the assembly. TMC leader Abhishek criticises Centre for 'lack' of accountability over Pahalgam attack, raises questions about India's global diplomacy

New Delhi: TMC MP and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee on Monday accused the Centre of lacking accountability over the Pahalgam terror attack and raised five questions, including those on border security and alleged intelligence failure. In a long post on X, Banerjee claimed, 'It has been over 55 days since the Pahalgam terror attack. It is deeply concerning that in a democracy, neither the mainstream media, members of the opposition, nor the judiciary has stepped forward to raise these five critical questions before the Government of India.' The TMC leader first questioned how four heavily armed terrorists managed to infiltrate the Indian borders and carry out an attack that left 26 civilians dead. Calling it a 'massive breach in national security', Banerjee asked who would take responsibility for the 'failure'. He also targeted the Intelligence Bureau, questioning why its chief was granted a one-year extension just a month after the attack. Banerjee also raised questions about India's global diplomacy, pointing out that while New Delhi reached out to 33 countries after the attack, financial aid flowed instead to Pakistan—from institutions like the IMF and World Bank. 'How does a country accused of supporting terror walk away with billions in aid and a UN committee leadership post?' he wrote. Interestingly, Banerjee was himself part of a cross-party delegation sent abroad to bolster India's anti-terror message. In Japan, he condemned Pakistan as the 'vile handler of terrorism' and called for global unity to isolate it diplomatically. Banerjee's sharp intervention, coming from within a delegation meant to project India's resilience, adds a new dimension to the political fallout from the Pahalgam incident. His message is clear: patriotism must not be used to mask unanswered questions, and accountability must begin at the top.
