No end to Ajit vs Sena tussle
The tussle between deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena seems to be unending. It has once again come out in the open following social justice minister and Sena leader Sanjay Shirsat's objection to the diversion of ₹410 crore earmarked for his department for disbursement to beneficiaries under the Ladki Bahin scheme. An irked Pawar on Sunday lobbed the ball in chief minister Devendra Fadnavis's court, saying it was a cabinet decision and that the latter would speak on the issue.
For the past several weeks, Sena ministers have been complaining in private against the finance department led by Ajit Pawar, saying their files are getting stuck or a lot of queries are raised before clearing them. Finance officials say this is a normal procedure although they are compelled to be stricter about spending considering the state's cash crunch.
It's not just Sena ministers or MLAs, even deputy CM Shinde himself is not very happy with the finance department. A senior Sena minister said they think their proposals or files are put under the microscope more as compared to their colleagues from the two other parties. Significantly, among the decisions that are being relooked at is the previous Shinde government's decision to give ₹26,300 crore contracts for construction of Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor. It had been decided to build the corridor through Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). Now questions are being raised over the contracts, which were allegedly given at 30% higher price than the expected cost. It has been suggested that the contracts be scrapped and the construction be done through the build, operate, transfer (BOT) model so that the state government need not bear the entire cost. Incidentally, the MSRDC is headed by Shinde. Officials say the finance department's opinion will be important in this decision. Looks like the Ajitdada-Sena saga that started in the MVA government will continue in the third government too.
That elusive CM's chair
Ajit Pawar once again publicly lamented that he has still not been able to ascend the chief minister's chair. 'For several years, I have been feeling that I should also be chief minister but that has not happened yet,'Ajitdada said in a lighter vein at a function organised by his party to felicitate the past chief ministers of Maharashtra. Referring to remarks by one of the speakers that the state should get its first woman chief minister, Pawar said even he wants to be chief minister and added that he was still hopeful. The maximum applause was reserved for chief minister Fadnavis who insisted that this is his third term in office. 'I do count that 72-hour tenure in which Ajitdada was my deputy. It was during that tenure that the foundation of the current government was built,' he remarked, amid roars of laughter.

Three Mahayuti ministers are travelling to Italy to participate in Macfrut 2025, an exhibition organised at Rimini in Italy. It is an international trade fair on fruits and vegetables processing, technology and marketing. Agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate, marketing minister Jaykumar Rawal and minister of state for agriculture Ashish Jaiswal are touring Italy from May 4 to 9 'to understand trends in global market and find opportunities for state's agricultural produce at international level and also study the new technology and processes,' according to a GR issued by the government.
The expenditure for the trip would be borne by Balasaheb Thackeray Agricultural Business and Rural Transformation project of the state government which was launched to transform the agriculture sector and livelihoods in the state and assisted by the World Bank.

Fadnavis finally enters Varsha
Four months after he took over as chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis shifted his residence to Varsha, the official bungalow of the CM. There have been speculations why Fadnavis was not shifting from Sagar bungalow in the same area that had been his residence after he took over as opposition leader following the failed experiment to form government with Ajit Pawar in 2019. He continued to stay at Sagar even as he became deputy chief minister in 2023. Officials said there was some necessary renovation at Varsha and he shifted on the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritiya on April 30. In the corridors of Mantralaya, there are several superstitions about which offices and bungalows are considered 'lucky' or 'unlucky'. Sagar bungalow is now being regarded as a lucky one since for the second time, its occupant has become the chief minister. Earlier, Ashok Chavan, who was residing at Sagar during his tenure as a minister in Vilasrao Deshmukh led government, was elevated as CM in 2008 following 26/11 terror attack when Deshmukh stepped down.

His candidature had become a major flashpoint in the fragile Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, as Congress and Sena (UBT) struggled to come to terms on seat-sharing. Both the Congress and the Sena UBT were vying for the Sangli seat. However, since Patil had joined Sena UBT just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the party was keen keen on contesting from the Sangli seat and that had strained the relations between the two alliance partners. Chandrahar Patil's shift to the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde is now being viewed as both symbolic and strategic, potentially opening up new political alignments ahead of the upcoming civic body elections.

Will oppose redevelopment project until everyone gets 500 sq ft houses in Dharavi: Aaditya Thackeray
Days after the state government approved the masterplan of Dharavi Slum Redevelopment Project, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Monday said his party would oppose the project until and unless all residents are guaranteed 500sqft homes in Dharavi and all the residents are declared eligible for free rehabilitation. Thackeray also demanded that the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Dharavi be granted the same status as Gujarat's GIFT City, claiming that Mumbai was being sidelined in favour of Gujarat and GIFT city was moved to Gujarat from Mumbai's BKC. Addressing a rally in Mulund, Thackeray alleged that the redevelopment plan would lead to large-scale displacement and benefit private players at the expense of long-time Dharavi residents. 'Our party's stand is very clear.. Every resident of Dharavi must get a 500 sqft house. If all residents are not made eligible, we will not allow them to be moved out of Dharavi,' said Thackeray at the 'Ladha Aaplya Mumbaicha' (fight for our Mumbai) campaign organised by the Sena UBT ahead of the BMC elections. Thackeray added that the current plan recognizes only those who settled before 2000 while many with documents dated after 2011 are likely to be excluded from rehabilitation and free houses in Dharavi. According to the eligibility criteria, for people to get homes, ground-floor residents who settled in Dharavi before January 1, 2000, will be eligible for a 350sqft home within Dharavi at no cost. Those who settled between January 1, 2000, and January 1, 2011, will receive a 300sqft home outside Dharavi at a cost of Rs 2.5 lakh under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). Residents who live in upper-floor structures built before November 15, 2022, and ground-floor tenements constructed between January 1, 2011, and November 15, 2022, will be offered rented accommodations outside Dharavi. These residents will also have the option of a hire-purchase scheme for 300 sqft homes. At the rally, Thackeray also raised objections to the proposed use of Deonar dumping ground and other land parcels given for the Dharavi redevelopment project. 'The BMC had clearly stated that the land cannot be given unless it is cleaned first. It is not suitable for people to live there,' he said. He also criticised the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, questioning why the route was designed to benefit Gujarat rather than linking Mumbai to other parts of Maharashtra.

All eyes on Sharad and Ajit Pawar as both NCP factions to celebrate 26th foundation day in city today
EVEN as both the factions of NCP are all geared up to hold foundation day celebrations on June 10 in Pune city, all eyes will be on Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar as to what stand they take on the possible merger or coming together of the two parties. Leaders and workers of both the factions are anticipating a decisive articulation of their party's position on the speculations that the two might come together in near future. The NCP was formed in 1999 by Sharad Pawar who walked away from the Congress along with PA Sangma and Tariq Anwar after openly opposing Sonia Gandhi as party president. In 2023, his nephew Ajit Pawar dealt him a severe blow as he walked away with 40 MLAs and joined hands with BJP and Shiv Sena to form the Mahayuti government in Maharashtra. On Tuesday, both the parties will hold separate foundation day celebrations. The parties will celebrate the 26th foundation day. While Sharad Pawar-led NCP (S-P) will hold its foundation at Balgandharva Rangmandir from 10 am, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP will hold its celebrations from 3 pm at Balewadi stadium. Sharad Pawar will be addressing the party workers around 1 pm while Ajit Pawar is expected to address party workers around 3 pm. From NCP (S-P), Jayant Patil, who is the state president of the party, Baramati MP Supriya Sule, Jitendra Ahwad and Rohit Pawar are expected to address the party rank and file, among others. For NCP, besides Ajit Pawar, Sunil Tatkare and Praful Patel, among others, will speak. Both the parties have not declared their agenda for the meeting. However, Sunil Tatkare, state president of NCP, denied that merger of the two NCP factions or coming together are on the agenda. ''Those things are not on our agenda. We will be discussing the forthcoming civic and local government elections and how the party should prepare for it. We will speak about the future road map for the party,' Tatkare said. NCP leader Mahesh Tapase said, 'Our party has also not announced any agenda. Whatever stand Pawar saheb takes, we will follow that. He will lay out our road map…I am not sure whether the merger issue will come up or not.' For over a month now, speculations have been rife about the possible coming together of the two factions of the NCP. While Ajit Pawar has refused to articulate views, Sharad Pawar has said that his daughter Supriya Sule will talk to party leaders and workers about it. Sule on her part said she will be discussing the issue with party workers and leaders. Last week, NCP chief spokesperson Amol Mitkari added fuel to the ongoing speculations when he said with Lord Vithal's blessings, the cousins might come together before 'Ashadhi Ekadashi.' However, Sunil Tatkare reprimanded him, saying he should not speak out of turn. 'I advise Mitkari to adopt caution when he gives out statements on behalf of the party. Mitkari is party's spokesperson. I want to tell him that once the party's position has been articulated by party president, others should not do so.' Tatkare said, 'NCP is now in Mahayuti and NDA. We are committed to our alliance. There will be no change in it…If anyone wants to come with us, they can do so under the current arrangement.'
