Seven low-floor buses rolled out in Trichy
Trichy: The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), Trichy region, on Sunday commissioned seven Ultra-Low Entry (ULE) buses, all originating from the KKBT terminus in Panjapur and connecting three destinations via five city routes. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Of the 25 low-floor buses allocated to Trichy, seven are now in service, three more will be commissioned within a week, and the remaining 15—currently under production—are expected to join the fleet in a month. A TNSTC official said trial runs on all ULE routes had been completed, along with road and bus stand modifications. "If overloading issues arise, we will analyse and address them to sustain operations," the official said. Four of the new buses connect Panjapur with Chathiram bus terminus—two via Woraiyur, one via Palakkarai, and one via Thillai Nagar. Two buses run between Panjapur and Samayapuram Mariamman temple via Trichy–Chennai NH (Palpannai and No 1 Tollgate), catering to pilgrims from other districts. One bus links Panjapur and Srirangam via Thillai Nagar. In total, the seven buses will make 104 trips daily, 60 to Chathiram, 28 to Samayapuram, and 16 to Srirangam. Passengers, especially senior citizens, welcomed the low-floor design, saying it made boarding with luggage easier. "Other buses have steep footboards. Though fares may be higher, those who spend more on autorickshaws may now opt for ULEs," said passenger Puthanampatti N Saravanan. TNSTC also launched four other services on Sunday, three mofussil buses from KKBT to Kodaikanal via Dindigul, and a city bus from Panjapur to Samayapuram via No 1 Tollgate.

Outdated bus routes keep Trichy's intracity services poor
Trichy: Trichy city can boast the state's second largest and sophisticated Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) at Panjapur, but TNSTC's bus services connecting major destinations within the city have not evolved proportionally to meet the dynamic travel patterns of passengers. Commercial streets, religious centres, and educational hubs in the city are not directly connected by city buses, forcing passengers to board multiple buses to reach destinations located within a 10-12 km radius. People from K K Nagar and Ponmalaipatti, two densely populated and developing areas, lack direct buses to the IBT. Passengers heading to Lalgudi and Manachanallur towns have no direct buses from IBT either. Instead, they commute to Chathiram bus terminus to reach those two towns. Kattur and Thiruverumbur, a developing commercial hub, are not directly connected by buses to Thillai Nagar, the city's major medical hub. It's worth noting that the Trichy region of TNSTC Kumbakonam division operates 287 city buses. "TNSTC should suggest new and high-demanding routes to promote public transport and prevent traffic congestion. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like M3M Freedom Sale Alert - Luxury Waterfront Homes at 2.9 Cr* M3M Great Freedom Sale Learn More Undo Aged people cannot board two buses to reach destinations within the city," Kallai Venkat, a frequent commuter, said. At least, 10 prominent destinations in the city and suburbs remain not directly connected by TNSTC, forcing people to opt for personal vehicles or auto rickshaws for daily commute. While bus routes were not reorganised based on changing travel patterns in decades, TNSTC insiders blamed lack of adequate buses for the poor connectivity. While Trichy city and the urban agglomeration population have breached 15 lakh, TNSTC has been operating the same 300-odd city buses in recent years. "Elcot IT Park has a four-lane road, but TNSTC fails to see the potential of operating new buses on new routes such as between Trichy airport and Thiruverumbur," R Thiruvenkadam, a road safety activist, added. Bus enthusiasts opined that TNSTC Trichy region, being managed from the division's headquarters in Kumbakonam 100km away, is the main reason for the lack of innovative approach and periodical supervision to strengthen connectivity and modernise fleet. A separate division for Trichy carving districts like Trichy, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Karur, and Pudukottai out of Kumbakonam division could streamline such lapses, the enthusiasts added. A senior TNSTC official said, "Recently, we launched a new route connecting Panjapur with Samayapuram via Trichy-Chennai national highway. It is a hit among passengers. More such routes will be identified and proposed, and connectivity will improve gradually." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). In a first for Trichy, TNSTC rolls out 10 ultra-low entry buses
Trichy: For the first time since the rollout of ultra-low entry (ULE) buses in select cities earlier this year, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), Trichy region, has received 10 new ULE buses. The non-air-conditioned, low-floor buses are expected to be deployed on new routes following trial runs to determine viable services. TNSTC has also appealed to Trichy corporation to carry out modification work at the Kalaignar Karunanidhi Bus Terminus (KKBT) in Panjapur to make it conducive to operating low-floor buses. TNSTC sources said that a total of 320 ULE buses were allocated for seven state transport corporation units, with TNSTC Kumbakonam getting 35 buses, of which 25 were allocated for Trichy city and the remaining 10 for Thanjavur city. In the first phase, TNSTC Trichy received 10 buses. The buses were initially allocated only for Chennai, Madurai, and Coimbatore, but as demand grew to introduce ULEs in Trichy, a few buses have been sanctioned for Trichy, Salem, and Tirunelveli. "TNSTC introducing the ULE buses in tier-II cities is a welcome move. Perhaps tourist hubs with viable roads can also be focused on by TNSTC in the next phases," Santhapriyan Kamaraj of TNSTC Enthusiasts, a public transport advocacy group, said. Officials said that new bus routes will be identified and trial runs will be conducted in Trichy city. Locals have stressed the requirement to connect Trichy airport, Railway Junction, and Panjapur KKBT with the new buses. However, trouble appears to be looming for TNSTC in Panjapur, as the current speed breakers on city bus bays and within the terminus pose operational challenges for the low-floor ULE buses. "TNSTC has verbally informed us about the need to modify the speed breakers in Panjapur terminus. However, removing them could compromise pedestrian safety. A suitable solution will be worked out," said an official from the Trichy corporation. Transport advocates have also urged TNSTC to introduce new routes via national highways, where the absence of speed breakers allows smoother transit for low-floor buses.
