Africa to Host High-Level Virtual Roundtable on Infrastructure for Trade and Prosperity

H-Tayea
Africa's leading voices in trade, policy, and infrastructure will convene on Wednesday, April 9, for a high-level virtual roundtable titled 'The Africa We Want: How Should Africa Fund and Build the Infrastructure for Trade, People Movement and Prosperity?'
The event, hosted by the Africa Prosperity Network in partnership with the AfCFTA Secretariat, aims to tackle one of the continent's most urgent priorities—building sustainable, well-funded infrastructure that supports regional integration and long-term economic growth.
Scheduled from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM GMT (2:00 PM to 4:00 PM CAT), the 90-minute roundtable will bring together a distinguished lineup of experts, business leaders, and policymakers to explore Africa's infrastructure gaps and propose bold, innovative funding solutions. The discussion will focus on actionable strategies for developing efficient transport networks, boosting connectivity, and facilitating the free movement of goods and people under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
At the heart of the conversation will be how Africa can finance and implement large-scale infrastructure projects that are inclusive, sustainable, and aligned with the goals of Agenda 2063. With logistics, roads, and trade corridors still underdeveloped across many regions, stakeholders will emphasize the need for cross-border cooperation, public-private partnerships, and African-led financing mechanisms that reflect the continent's development priorities.
The event features high-level participation from institutions such as the AfCFTA Secretariat and Afreximbank, alongside influential voices in policy, business, finance, and civil society. Among the speakers are Rui Pedro Afonso Livramento, Chief of Staff at the AfCFTA Secretariat; Emeka Uzonwa, Director of Banking and Special Initiatives at Afreximbank; and Donu Kogbara, a well-known columnist and commentator. Other panelists include Ziad Hamoui of Borderless Alliance, James Amoo-Gottfried from Ghana's Ministry of Roads and Highways, Anthony Pile of Blue Skies Holdings, finance expert Eric Otoo, CedarLab founder Tshegofatso Motaung, businessman Pierre Coussey, and Gideon Asare, CEO of Adonis Travels.
This timely discussion is expected to generate actionable insights and policy proposals that support intra-African trade, enhance regional connectivity, and accelerate economic transformation. With the AfCFTA's potential to create the largest free trade area in the world by population, infrastructure development remains the backbone of Africa's prosperity goals. The Africa Prosperity Network and the AfCFTA Secretariat are calling on stakeholders from across the continent to join this vital conversation and help shape the infrastructure that will define Africa's future.

Markets mixed as investors await key Fed speech - Markets & Companies

Markets were varied during cautious trading sessions on Thursday, one day before a key speech expected to offer signals about future interest rate cuts in the United States. US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, who has resisted public demands by President Donald Trump to slash rates, is scheduled to deliver remarks Friday at the annual central bankers conference in Wyoming. Data last week provided a mixed picture of US inflation, making it uncertain if the Fed will lower rates as many investors expect in September, 9 which could bolster growth in the world's largest economy. In a sign of further uncertainty, recent days have seen a sell-off of major technology stocks as investors grow wary of a sustained rally across the sector despite a range of global economic hurdles. Wall Street closed mostly lower on Wednesday, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq falling again as shares in AI chip-maker Nvidia ticked down. Despite the building unease, shares in Seoul closed higher Thursday, bolstered by an uptick in Samsung's price. Shanghai, Sydney and Taipei also saw moderate gains on the day. Meanwhile, Tokyo's Nikkei index closed lower for the second day in a row, while shares in Hong Kong finished narrowly down. Morning trading in Europe saw Frankfurt and Paris make slight drops. London was nearly flat. Japan reported Wednesday that the country's July exports plunged at the steepest rate in over four years, straining under hefty US tariffs. The slump in tech stocks on Wednesday "appeared more like profit-taking than a shift in conviction", wrote Ahmad Assiri, research strategist at Pepperstone, in a note. "This rotation out of tech suggests a cooling-off phase rather than a wholesale shift in positioning," he added. Global markets have fluctuated recently on the prospects of a peace deal in Ukraine, following days of high-stakes diplomacy in the aftermath of Trump's Friday meeting with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. But hopes for an imminent end to the war -- started by Moscow's invasion over three years ago -- were tempered Wednesday after Russia said it must be included in any discussions on security guarantees for Ukraine. The diplomatic whirlwind has sparked volatility in oil markets as traders speculate over the possible lifting of sanctions on Russia, a major producer. Oil prices continued to rise Thursday on the heels of a report the previous day showing a sharp decline in US crude stockpiles. Egypt Praises International Efforts Toward Peace in Ukraine

H-Tayea Egypt has welcomed recent international efforts aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, following a series of high-level meetings earlier this month that signaled renewed momentum toward a negotiated settlement. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Cairo said that it closely followed the outcomes of the US–Russia summit in Alaska on 15 August, as well as the 18 August meeting in Washington that was attended by US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and several European leaders. Egypt described these diplomatic moves as 'positive steps' that could open the way for peace after more than two years of devastating conflict. The statement stressed that Egypt has consistently rejected military solutions to international crises, reaffirming its position that only political and diplomatic channels can deliver a sustainable end to the Ukraine war. Cairo urged all parties to show genuine political will, flexibility, and adherence to international law and the UN Charter in order to build common ground for peace. Egypt also highlighted the global consequences of the conflict, particularly its impact on developing nations. Rising food and energy costs, the statement noted, have placed severe pressure on countries already struggling with economic challenges, making a rapid end to hostilities even more urgent. Beyond Ukraine, Cairo called on the international community to show the same determination in tackling crises in the Middle East, especially the long-standing Israeli–Palestinian conflict. It urged Israel to accept the recent proposal brokered by US envoy Steve Witkoff and agreed upon by Hamas, which calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the entry of humanitarian aid, and the release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners. Egypt stressed that such steps would help revive the stalled peace process on the basis of a two-state solution and international legitimacy. Concluding its statement, Egypt reaffirmed its readiness to work with regional and global partners, including the United States, in advancing initiatives that strengthen international peace and security, while underlining its long-standing role as a bridge between conflicting parties. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News The Jessica Radcliffe Orca Attack? 100% Fake and AI-Generated

Egypt Calls for International Support to Advance Gaza Ceasefire

H-Tayea Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatti held a series of high-level calls with his international counterparts. The Egyptian minister spoke with David Lammy, the UK's Foreign Secretary, Hakan Fidan, the Turkish Foreign Minister, and Kaja Kallas, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. He also spoke with Hussein al-Sheikh, Deputy Chairman of the Palestinian Liberation Organization's Executive Committee and Deputy President of Palestine. During the talks, Abdelatti outlined Egypt's active mediation efforts, carried out in cooperation with Qatar and the United States, to secure a ceasefire, ensure the entry of humanitarian aid, and facilitate the release of both hostages and detainees. He emphasized that significant progress has been made in recent talks, particularly during the consultations held in Cairo with the Palestinian delegation, which focused on the proposal put forward by U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff. Abdelatti underlined the need for international pressure on Israel to approve the plan. The minister also discussed Egypt's preparations to host an international conference on early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza once a ceasefire agreement is reached, signaling Egypt's continued commitment to supporting Palestinians both politically and on the ground. For their part, the UK, Turkish, and EU officials praised Egypt's central role in mediation, stressing their full support for Cairo's efforts in partnership with Qatar and the United States to achieve a breakthrough. They reaffirmed that Egypt's leadership remains essential for stability and peace across the region. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News The Jessica Radcliffe Orca Attack? 100% Fake and AI-Generated
