Hamzah's mum-in-law dies in Ipoh house fire

PETALING JAYA : The mother-in-law of opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin died in a fire at her home in Ipoh last night.
Salmiah Nyakk Matt, 84, died in the 9.19pm blaze while Hamzah's father-in-law, Abdul Ghani Ngah, 83, is receiving medical treatment for breathing difficulties.
Salmiah's body was discovered in a bedroom on the lower floor of the double-storey house, which was 80% destroyed by the fire, Kosmo reported.
Ghani was in a room upstairs when the fire broke out. Four other family members, between 18 and 49 years of age, escaped unharmed.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Hamzah, the Bersatu deputy president, is also the MP for Larut.

The charge is framed under Section 14(d) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 which provides for a prison sentence not exceeding 20 years and whipping, if convicted. Deputy Public Prosecutor Kamarul Hasyime Rosli appeared for the prosecution while the accused was unrepresented. Judge Zulkifli Abllah set July 21 for mention and appointment of a lawyer.— Bernama

PETALING JAYA : Police are investigating a 70-year-old woman for allegedly driving on the motorcycle lane of the Penang second bridge. Seberang Perai Selatan police chief Jay January Siowou said a video of the incident, showing a Proton X50 using the motorcycle lane of the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge, had made its rounds on social media. He said a preliminary investigation found that the footage was captured at Km8.6 of the bridge, heading towards the island, at about 1.30pm on June 20. 'Police managed to track down the driver and had taken her to a police station for further investigation,' Jay said in a statement yesterday. The case is being investigated for the offence of using an unauthorised lane.

MELAKA, June 22 — Two friends were killed when the car they were travelling in skidded and crashed into a tree on the road divider along Jalan Persisiran Pantai Klebang here early this morning. Melaka Tengah police chief ACP Christopher Patit said the incident occurred at around 6.45am and the victims were identified as the driver of the Proton Wira, Muhammad Nur Zamani Mohd Nazery, 28, and his passenger, Muhammad Haziq, 25. 'Initial investigations found that the car, driven by Muhammad Nur Zamani, was travelling from Melaka town towards Bukit Rambai via Jalan Persisiran Pantai Klebang. Upon reaching the scene, the vehicle is believed to have skidded, struck a road cone, spun out of control, and crashed into a tree on the road divider,' he said in a statement today. 'As a result of the accident, both victims sustained severe injuries to the head, body, and arms, and were pronounced dead at the scene.' He added that the bodies have been sent to Melaka Hospital for post-mortem, while the vehicle has been taken to the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (PUSPAKOM) for further assessment. Meanwhile, Melaka Tengah Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) Operations Commander, Senior Fire Officer I Mohd Zahery Mohd Zailani, said they received an emergency call at 6.51am and arrived at the scene nine minutes later. 'Upon arrival, we found the driver trapped inside the vehicle, while his friend had been thrown out of the car,' he said. He added that the situation was brought under control by 7.18am, with eight personnel involved in the rescue operation. — Bernama
