JAKARTA, July 18 (Bernama) -- Riding high on their emphatic 7-1 win over Brunei today, the national Under-23 (U-23) football squad will waste no time in preparing for a tougher challenge against Indonesia on July 21 to determine their semi-final hopes in the AFF U-23 Championship.
Head coach Nafuzi Zain said the focus was now entirely on building a solid strategy and getting the players mentally and physically ready for the decisive Group A match.

'The match against Indonesia is the biggest challenge. But we will not back down. Our focus now is on recovery, and on mental and physical preparations for the next match,' he said after the game here.
He said a detailed analysis would be conducted to identify Indonesia's strengths and weaknesses, but acknowledged that playing at the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Main Stadium would present significant challenges and pressure.
He said this situation required the players to be highly motivated and fully prepared to face the thunderous cheers of the home crowd and enter the field with full confidence.
'We know Indonesian fans are extraordinary and extremely passionate, but our players are also very spirited. This is the time to prove their capability,' he said.
Commenting on his decision to change the starting lineup against Brunei today, Nafuzi explained that it was due to player injuries and to give others a chance to gain experience.
Man of the Match Muhammad Haqimi Azim Rosli, who scored twice, vowed to give his best and carry the winning momentum into the next game.

Coach blames players' lack of confidence for loss to Thailand in King's Cup final

KUALA LUMPUR: National sepak takraw head coach Ahmad Jais Baharun has expressed disappointment at his players' lacklustre performance en route to losing to Thailand in the Thai King's Cup men's team regu final yesterday. He said that his men, who are capable of playing much better, lacked confidence in themselves, and this led to their defeat. 'Personally, the players did not perform up to expectations in the final... they did not capitalise on their chances when they went ahead, and that allowed our opponents to catch up and put us under pressure. 'That is what we need to work on ahead of the SEA Games at the end of this year,' he said when contacted by Bernama today. Yesterday, the national side lost 2-0 to arch-rivals Thailand in the team regu final of the 2025 Thai King's Cup at the Central Hatyai shopping centre in Songkhla. The defeat means Malaysia's 34-year wait for victory in the team regu event continues, with their last win coming in the 1991 SEA Games in Manila. Ahmad Jais, however, is not about to press the panic button as he has only had a short time to prepare the players for the Thai King's Cup. With a few more months to go to the Dec 9-20 SEA Games in Thailand, he plans to use the time left to draw up a more effective strategy so that his men can be competitive at the biennial Games. 'For the Thai King's Cup, we only had a week to whip the team into shape. However, I don't want to use that as an excuse or reason for our lacklustre performance. 'Insha-Allah, we will conduct a post-mortem in preparation for the SEA Games in Thailand,' he said- BERNAMA

Malaysia captures third spot at Genting World Lion Dance Championship

The championship saw nine teams from six countries and territories - Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Myanmar, China and Taiwan - vie for the championship title in the final. Malaysia, through the maiden participation of the Petaling Jaya Catholic High School Alumni Association Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe, earned 9.59 points to be placed third and took home USD6,000 cash, a trophy and medals presented by Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Michael Oh Head, one of the troupe's lion dancers, said that although there was some pressure representing Malaysia, the team gave their best performance. 'We will continue to train until we achieve better results and improved performances. We also hope to be given more opportunities to represent Malaysia and achieve success, thus bringing glory to the country,' he told Bernama after the prize-giving ceremony. Two other Malaysian teams - Kwong Ngai Lion Dance and Malaysia Xuan Long Dragon and Lion Dance Rawang Selangor - also made it to the final. The Kwong Ngai Lion Dance troupe finished seventh with 8.89 points, while the team from Rawang had to withdraw after one of its members sustained a leg injury. Malaysian Lion Dance Association advisor Siow Ho Phiew expressed his pride and satisfaction with the national teams' achievements, while describing the success of the three Malaysian teams reaching the final as a significant accomplishment that elevated the country's reputation on the international stage. 'Yes, I am satisfied with the performances of the Malaysian teams today. When it comes to major championships, we must work hard and compete in Genting to become world champions or succeed in other competitions,' he said. The Genting championship saw the Singapore B Team, represented by Yi Mei Athletic Association, crowned champion with 9.78 points while their counterparts, Singapore A, also represented by the same association, finished second with 9.66 points. The two teams took home USD18,000 and USD10,000 respectively, along with trophies and medals. Resorts World Genting Sales, Marketing and Public Relations executive vice-president Spencer Lee said this year's edition featured a significant difference with the creative use of props and storytelling elements, turning lion dance into not only a cultural performance but also a high-stamina sport. 'We hope that one day lion dance can become an international sports event, (and featured) in the SEA Games, Asian Games or the Olympics,' he said. The championship, organised by Resorts World Genting in collaboration with the Selangor and Federal Territory Dragon and Lion Dance Federation, saw 40 teams from around the world vying for glory since Friday (July 25). * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
