Policymakers need to be vigilant of evolving global crude price dynamics impact: RBI

Hans India24-07-2025
New Delhi: While active government intervention has contained spillover to domestic oil prices, policymakers need to be vigilant and cautious of the direct and indirect impact of the evolving global crude price dynamics through continuous assessment, given India's increasing dependence on crude oil imports, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has stressed.
In this regard, government policies would play a pivotal role in containing the impact, said the RBI in a paper titled 'Revisiting the Oil Price and Inflation Nexus in India' in its latest Bulletin.
'Specifically, reducing crude oil dependence by promoting alternate non-fossil energy usage and regional free trade agreements and bilateral treaties with major oil exporters could be explored for oil imports at favourable prices,' the paper emphasised.
In recent years, India's net import demand for crude oil has remained strong, fuelled by consumption growth and robust economic activity.
Oil prices and their inflationary impact is a key metric that sensitise monetary policy formulation in economies vulnerable to oil price shocks, particularly net oil importers, where rising oil prices can significantly dampen economic growth and stoke inflation pressures.
'The direct impact of international crude oil price changes to domestic petrol and diesel inflation, and indirectly through transportation and input costs, is evident in the post-deregulation period albeit at a subdued level as government intervention by taxes, cess and regulation of oil marketing companies has often muted the impact,' the RBI paper noted.
The results of the empirical analysis suggest that a 10 per cent increase in international crude oil prices could raise India's headline inflation by around 20 basis points on a contemporaneous basis.
'Although the pass-through to retail prices has remained contained with active government intervention, increasing dependence on crude oil imports may have inflationary consequences in the long run, warranting constant vigilance and careful monitoring of its potential impact,' said the RBI paper.
Meanwhile, India is taking steady, confident steps towards oil self-sufficiency and under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, the country is securing its energy future, step by step, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said recently.
While 1 million square km offshore area is now open for oilfield exploration, 99 per cent of 'No-Go' areas have been cleared. The oil and gas blocks being offered under the Open Acreage Licensing Programme (OALP) have already garnered attention from global and domestic energy players, and Round X is expected to set new benchmarks for participation and investment.

Central banks are building a haven of bullion assets

MUMBAI: Central bank gold appetite, although not as voracious as the 1,000-tonne-a-year purchases in the past three calendar years, remains largely undiminished globally as this group of institutional buyers diversifies its asset base beyond the customary dollar-denominated holdings in a world increasingly strewn with tariff snags. Central banks net bought 166 tonnes of gold in three months to June, 33% lower quarter-on-quarter, World Gold Council (WGC) data showed. While this is the lowest quarterly number since June 2022, it is 41% higher than the average quarterly level seen between 2010 and 2021, before buying ramped up sharply in more recent years, WGC data showed. Explore courses from Top Institutes in Please select course: Select a Course Category For the first half (H1) of 2025, the number stood at 415 tonnes compared to 525 tonnes in year ago. This is also the lowest first half since 2022. Elevated gold prices amid destabilising economic and geopolitical environment has likely contributed to the slowdown in central bank buying, WGC said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Puerto Plata: Bathroom Remodeling Trends in 2025 May Surprise You Bathroom Remodeling | Search Ads Search Now Undo According to Madhavankutty G , chief economist at Canara Bank, the central banks' gold purchases fit perfectly into the de-dollarisation theme, where countries want to diversify their foreign exchange reserves. Though the dollar is still dominant in FX reserves, its share is coming down drastically, with gold benefiting from this shift. "The added benefit of gold is also the safety aspect. The US tariffs have increased the geopolitical as well as global economic uncertainty, which in turn is expected to keep gold prices elevated. Historically, US Treasury yields and gold prices were inversely related. That relationship has broken now. So even as yields are expected to remain above 4.30%, gold demand prices may also remain high," he said. Live Events Although central banks typically are strategic buyers of gold, they are not completely insensitive to its price level. "But that they continue to add gold in the face of a higher price underscores their continuing favourable attitudes towards gold as a strategic asset amid such uncertainty," it said. According to WCG, the longer-term trend of central banks taking advantage of gold's diversification properties and reallocating from US assets to gold remains intact. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) bought nearly half a tonne of gold in the last week of June after a relatively conservative spell of bullion shopping in the current fiscal year, ET reported earlier. The RBI 's outstanding stock of gold amounted to nearly 880 tonnes as of June 27. Its share in India's foreign exchange reserves climbed to 12.1% as of July 18, 2025, from 8.9% as of July 19, 2024. WGC's Central Bank Gold Reserves Survey 2025 revealed that 95% expect gold reserves to increase over the next 12 months. The results of the survey, which collected data from 73 of the world's central banks, were published in mid-June. The National Bank of Poland was the largest buyer of gold, adding 19 tonnes to its gold reserves in the June quarter, while China's reported purchases amounted to 6 tonnes, half of what it bought in the March quarter. China's gold reserves now stand at 2,299 tonnes, WCG data showed.

'No formal talks yet with US on F-35 buy': Government in Lok Sabha

NEW DELHI: India has not had any formal talks with the US over the purchase of fifth-generation F-35 fighter jets, the external affairs ministry informed the Lok Sabha Friday. Responding to a written query, MoS (MEA) Kirti Vardhan Singh said the India-US joint statement following the meeting between PM Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump in Feb 2025 had mentioned that US will undertake a review of its policy on selling fifth-generation fighters (such as the F-35) and undersea systems to India. "No formal discussions have been held as yet on this issue," added the minister. A news agency reported on Thursday that India had told the US that it is not interested in purchasing the F-35 jets. The minister was also asked whether the govt has reviewed the dynamics relating to US military assistance proposals and India's autonomy in terms of foreign policy, given its strategic implications, especially in a conflict scenario involving third-party mediation. The minister responded by saying that the India-US partnership has benefited from growing strategic convergence & cooperation and that India closely evaluates all its external partnerships, including those in the defence and strategic domains, through the prism of its national interest and commitment to strategic autonomy. "India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership is anchored in mutual trust, shared interests, goodwill and robust engagement between our citizens," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like San Ramon: How Much Does It Cost To Replace Old Windows? Centre clears Itarsi-Nagpur fourth rail line project

Bhopal: The PM Narendra Modi-led Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the Itarsi-Nagpur fourth railway line project. CM Mohan Yadav expressed gratitude to Modi for sanctioning this initiative. The approved railway line, stretching approximately 297 km between Itarsi and Nagpur, will strengthen railway connectivity in central India. According to Yadav, this development will benefit Narmadapuram, Betul, Pandhurna (Madhya Pradesh), and Nagpur (Maharashtra). The project will facilitate easier access for pilgrims travelling to the Jyotirlinga temples from Mahakaleshwar, Omkareshwar to Srisailam and Rameswaram. The 339 km track will encompass 37 stations, 36 major bridges, 415 minor bridges, 2 road over bridges, 74 road under bridges, four tunnels, and two rail over bridges. The connection will link four Jyotirlinga temples: Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh, Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh, and Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu, enhancing the pilgrim experience and regional tourism. At Nagpur, the fourth line will join the Mumbai-Howrah High Density Network, complementing the existing double line and partially finished third line. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Hanoi: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo The Itarsi-Nagpur section experiences significant congestion, especially in the Ghat section (Maramjhiri-Dharakhoh). This addition aims to increase capacity, decrease delays, and improve train frequency, supporting National Infrastructure Pipeline and Gati Shakti initiatives. The ongoing third line construction, valued at Rs 2,525.73 crore, includes 27 stations, 361 bridges/culverts, and four tunnels covering 1.4 km in the Ghat section. The fourth line's implementation may require land acquisition from 40 villages in Betul district, similar to the 16.036 hectares acquired from 290 farmers for the third line. The railway line will establish improved transport connections across significant districts, benefiting passenger and freight services. Regional industries will gain from enhanced logistics capabilities. The infrastructure will incorporate contemporary signalling systems and safety protocols. The construction phase will create substantial employment opportunities, continuing through operational stages.
