Rahul Gandhi points to new China-Pakistan axis, blames govt for jet losses

Time of India6 days ago
Leader of Opposition
Rahul Gandhi
on Tuesday accused Prime Minister
Narendra Modi
of having conducted
Operation Sindoor
without political will and by tying the Indian forces' hands and alleged that the sole aim of the military action against Pakistan was to "protect the image of the PM" after the Pahalgam killings. Gandhi alleged that the Modi government's policy short-sight led to a "dangerous Pakistan-China military fusion" and challenged the prime minister to show "half of Indira Gandhi's courage" to state in Parliament that India didn't lose any aircraft during the conflict with Pakistan and that President Trump didn't force the ceasefire.
In an aggressive speech in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi built his case by citing Defence Minister
Rajnath Singh
's remark that after hitting the terror camps in Pakistan right at the beginning of Operation Sindoor, the Indian side had informed Pakistan of the hit and assured that it had no intention of escalating by targeting Pakistan's military assets.

"Maybe he (Rajnath Singh) didn't understand what he revealed. The DGMO of India was told by the Government of India to ask for a ceasefire at 1.35 am itself on the night of Operation Sindoor...You told Pakistan you do not have the political will to fight," he said.

He said the constraint put on the Indian forces led to the loss of IAF aircraft. "Rajnath Ji also said that we told the Pakistanis that we are not going to hit any of their military infrastructure...It meant that our Air Force was not given operational freedom, the freedom of manoeuvre... Captain Shiv Kumar, defence attache in Indonesia, said India lost so many aircraft, but I do not agree with that, but we did lose some aircraft. That happened because of the constraint given by the political leadership to not attack the military establishment and their air defence," Gandhi said.
While accusing PM Modi of lacking political will and not giving a free hand to the Indian forces, Gandhi contrasted it with PM Indira Gandhi's conduct during the 1971 war. "I would like to remind him (Rajnath SIngh) that there was political will in 1971. The Seventh Fleet was approaching India. The then PM Indira Gandhi said we will have to do whatever we have to to liberate Bangladesh, come what may. When General Manekshaw asked for more time to start the war, Indira Gandhi told him 'take six months, one year, whatever time you need because you should have freedom of action, of manoeuvre. So, one lakh Pakistani soldiers surrendered and a new country was formed".

Delhi Confidential: Caught in crossfire

Senior BJP leader and Lok Sabha MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy got a taste of the bitterness between TMC leaders Kalyan Banerjee and Mahua Moitra on Monday. Rudy, who is contesting against his party colleague Sanjeev Balyan for the post of secretary (administration), Constitution Club of India, was at the Makar Dwar of the Parliament House when he saw Banerjee leaving the premises. Rudy approached Banerjee, a four-time MP from Serampore, seeking his vote but the latter shouted at him that he would not support anyone who is backed by Moitra. 'You are supported by Mahua Moitra. I will not vote for you,' Banerjee told Rudy. As the stunned BJP leader looked at him, Banerjee announced that he 'would warn everyone who is friendly' with Moitra to stay away from him. Old Practice Revived Rajya Sabha getting adjourned for the day after being informed about the death of former Jharkhand CM and sitting MP Shibu Soren marked a return to a practice which was discontinued a few years ago. The proceedings of the Upper House were adjourned only for a few hours after the death of former Union Ministers Arun Jaitley (2019), Ram Vilas Paswan (2020) and Congress leader Rajeev Satav (2021). On Monday, Opposition leaders led by Congress's Jairam Ramesh suggested that the House should go back to the old practice of adjournment as a mark of respect to the deceased member. Mission Sindoor The invitation cards for Independence Day programme this year carry a logo of Operation Sindoor, an effort by the government to publicise India's military operation against terror targets in Pakistan in May this year. It is learnt that Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi in an address to senior Army officers post-Operation Sindoor had mentioned the decision to imprint the logo on all cards and official correspondence of the defence services. Senior Army officers are also likely to deliver lectures in schools on Operation Sindoor to create awareness among students on the operation.

Prohibitory orders likely ahead of PUCSC polls amid rising student violence

1 2 3 4 Chandigarh: With Panjab University likely to hold its PU Campus Students' Council (PUCSC) elections on Sept 4 or 5, the administration has started security preparations much earlier than usual. A meeting between the university and police officials, including the senior superintendent of police, is scheduled for Wednesday to discuss the imposition of prohibitory orders around Aug 15 — a first for PU student elections. The move comes amid concerns over rising student violence on and off campus. Nearly 100 police personnel have already been deployed for security, with three permanent checkpoints established near the Administrative Block, Ankur School, and University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS). Police are checking vehicles, enforcing barricading, and monitoring student movement to restrict entry of outsiders. "This time, deployment is not symbolic. We are actively checking for weapons and other suspicious items, especially during evening hours," said a senior police officer posted on campus. The strict measures follow a series of violent clashes involving student groups in PU and other city colleges. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Just a few days back, two FIRs were registered after rival groups clashed at GGDSD College in Sector 32. On April 28, SOPU factions fought at the PU Student Centre. On April 8, the Dalal camp and Joint Action Committee (JAC) clashed outside Boys Hostel No. 4. On March 28, PU student Aditya Thakur was murdered during a fest on the Sector 25 campus. In another case, on March 22, PUCSC joint secretary and others were booked following an ABVP-related brawl in Sector 15. Vice-chancellor Prof Renu Vig confirmed that the university has called the police meeting to finalise steps for ensuring peace. "Various student organisations have multiple factions and hence infighting. The past six months have seen many student groups clashing with each other," she said. PU authorities have also scheduled a meeting with all student parties for Tuesday. Dean student welfare Prof Amit Chauhan said the administration will also meet student leaders. "The aim is to ensure a peaceful environment during elections. We are concerned about outsider involvement and are considering all options, including prohibitory orders, though the matter is yet to be finalised," he said. Sources said the university is also planning stricter controls on vehicle entry and increased surveillance over the next few weeks. Security staff have been instructed to assist police in enforcing discipline across the campus. Police officials said that some student groups are being monitored for alleged connections to gangsters. "We are keeping tabs on movement, contacts, and past involvement of some leaders with criminal elements. This time we are taking proactive steps," said a police officer. With campaigning expected to begin in mid-August, university authorities say maintaining order is the top priority and students will have to operate within strict boundaries. MLA: Forest land along Nagaland freed post-eviction to be fenced

1 2 Guwahati: Forest areas freed from encroachments of migrant Muslims of Bangladesh/East Pakistan origin in Golaghat are set to be fenced along the Assam-Nagaland border following phase-wise plantation drives, said Sarupathar MLA Biswajit Phukan. He was overseeing the large-scale eviction drive, which resulted in the reclamation of about 10,000 bighas of forest land. While there have been fresh concerns among a section of families regarding the movement of Nagas in the border zone of Rengma and Nambor South Reserve Forests, Phukan said the question of Naga encroachment does not arise. Sources said although there are Naga settlements within Rengma and Nambor South, they have more presence at Nambor South, with shops and houses constructed there. In some locations in Rengma and Nambor South, Bodo and Nepali families coexist with Nagas. In light of this, a comprehensive drone survey is underway at Rengma and Nambor South to survey reclaimed forest area following eviction drives. "There are no encroachment attempts by Nagas in and around Rengma or Nambor South. This is a border area. Naga villages may exist on Assam land. They are not our enemies. But the boundary with Nagaland and Naga settlements inside Assam are different," Phukan told TOI, on Monday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo He added that plantations to be undertaken in the reclaimed forest areas will be safeguarded through fencing, which will also protect Assam's forest land from further there was no eviction drive on Monday, sources said that plans are underway to conduct eviction drives in four more villages in Rengma RF—No. 1 Madhupur, Haldibari, Rananagar, and Hatidubi soon.
