By: Noor Zafira Zayn Text Size: Azizah and Norazlinah Kota Kinabalu: Gagasan Rakyat Sabah Wanita Chief Datuk Seri Azizah Mohd Dun said every leader must champion the rights of the people, especially in defending women's dignity and interests. 'I commend Kunak Assemblywoman Datuk Norazlinah Arif for speaking up on women's rights, particularly on issues affecting their dignity. If women remain silent and fail to stand up for their honour, especially when it involves sensitivity and morality, who else will? 'Her actions should inspire other leaders, and all women, to boldly uphold our rights. People cannot just make inappropriate jokes without boundaries,' she told reporters during her Aidilfitri open house at her house, here, Saturday. She said this in reaction to a widely circulated social media clip of a State Legislative Assembly session, where Norazlinah expressed disappointment over being playfully punched by Merotai Assemblyman Sarifuddin Hata during a previous sitting. In the video, Norazlinah argued that such actions, even if meant as a joke, were unacceptable. The exchange also involved Lamag Assemblyman Datuk Bung Moktar Radin and Sarifuddin. Azizah said that women's participation in Sabah's governance under GRS proves the State Government takes their role seriously. 'We have achieved 30 per cent women's involvement across key positions, including Government Link Companies chairpersons and board directors. This is not about monopolising power but working alongside men (who hold 70 per cent) to develop and progress our beloved Sabah,' she added. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Warisan's action is damaging: Phoong
Published on: Saturday, June 14, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 14, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: Phoong (left) criticised Chong's (right) approach, saying the matter should have been raised in the State Assembly or through official channels, not with the police. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe condemned Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong's police report against the RM31 billion Esteel steel project in Sipitang, calling it 'bizarre' and damaging to investor confidence. Chong, from Parti Warisan, lodged the report on Friday after claiming there was no visible progress at the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (SOGIP), following a visit with Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Justin Wong. Advertisement Phoong criticised Chong's approach, saying the matter should have been raised in the State Assembly or through official channels, not with the police. 'With that kind of attitude, it's no wonder why investors are hesitant to come to Sabah,' he said. He reaffirmed that the Esteel project is legitimate, vetted by federal agencies, and officially launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor on May 30. Phoong added the project secured a Federal Manufacturing Licence in January, signed a gas supply deal with Sabah Energy and Petronas in February, and awarded a jetty construction contract to China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) in May. Esteel, he said, paid RM35 million in deposit and signed a sublease agreement with Sabah Oil and Gas Development Corporation and construction is expected to begin by July or August. He said delays were attributed to a federal moratorium on new steel licences due to global oversupply but Esteel was the only project granted an exemption which reflected strong federal confidence. He warned that Chong's actions could scare away genuine investors. 'If you question the project, come to the State Assembly. Ask me directly, I am prepared to answer. But making a police report implies that the government or investor is lying. That is serious and completely uncalled for. 'No other state would treat an investor this way. Actions like this could set back Sabah's hard-won investment gains. We should not politicise investment matters. No industrial state in the country goes around lodging police reports against investors. 'Even in states like Kedah or Selangor, political battles stay in the legislature. Dragging a legitimate investor's name into a police investigation is not only unfair, but dangerous. It creates uncertainty,' Phoong said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Hamas says Iran 'paying the price' for supporting Gaza militants
CAIRO: The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas said Iran, its strategic ally, was 'paying the price' for supporting militant groups in Gaza in their decades-long struggle against Israel, after Israel launched large-scale attacks on Friday against Iran. Hamas leaders have repeatedly thanked Iran for its military and financial support to the group in its fight against Israel, including during the ongoing war that erupted in October 2023. 'Iran is today paying the price for its steadfast positions in support of Palestine and its resistance, and its adherence to its independent national decision,' Hamas said in a statement. Tehran has vowed retaliation for Israel's early morning attack on Iranian military and nuclear facilities that killed several top commanders. Israel said it was working to intercept 100 drones that were launched by Iran, but had not reached Israel. Hamas armed wing spokesperson Abu Ubaida said in a post on Telegram later on Friday that the group would stand by Iran in its conflict against Israel. 'The Zionist enemy is completely deluded if it thinks that these treacherous strikes can undermine the fronts of resistance or stabilize the pillars of this fragile entity in the region,' he said. 'On the contrary, it continues to make successive strategic mistakes that will bring it closer to its inevitable demise, God willing.'
