Emerald Hill parody by Mark Lee, Dennis Chew and Marcus Chin cracks up original actors

CNA22-04-2025

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then the DJs of Love 972's The Breakfast Quartet have just paid some side-splitting tributes to the Chinese drama Emerald Hill - The Little Nonya Story, which aired its last episode on Netflix on Apr 21.
The DJs – Mark Lee, Dennis Chew and Marcus Chin, minus Chen Biyu – donned sarong kebayas and makeup for a two-episode parody titled Pearl Hill on Instagram.
Lee played the protagonist Zhang Xinniang, while Chew assumed the villainous role of Zhang Anna and Xinniang's nemesis. Meanwhile, Chin slipped into beaded slippers for the matriarchal role of Liu Xiuniang.
Like the convoluted relations central to the Zhang family's drama, the parody's plot centred around betrayals, blackmail and shock betrothals that cleverly plugged their sister stations such as Yes 933 and Capital 958, and their respective DJs.

In the first episode posted on Apr 15, Lee's Xinniang was seen berating Chew's Anna for pursuing his heart's desire by guest-DJ-ing with Yes 933 on Apr 1, which was where Chew had his radio career start in real life.
'Don't forget, you now belong to 972!' lectured Lee, who also accused Chew of shamelessly crushing on Yes 933's DJ Zhong Kunhua.
Of course, you can't have drama without a good, ol-fashioned love triangle. In the second episode on Apr 21, Lee and Chew were pitted against each other over Zuye, the love interest of Xinniang and Anna in Emerald Hill – until Chin broke up the fight with some shocking news.
'I have settled your betrothals,' Chin proclaimed. Pointing at Chew, Chin announced he was to marry 958's Pan Jia Biao. 'And you, you will marry 958's Qiu Sheng Yang,' he said to Lee – at which point, the DJs broke character and guffawed.
The cross-dressing hosts also did not waste the opportunity to poke fun at each other. Lee marched into one episode and called Chew 'Ne Zha', the character in the hit Chinese animation, who is known for his double-bun hair style.
Chin's matriarch was also the butt of their jokes with Lee's and Chew's characters sucking up to their 'neo' with a hilarious rhyme that played on his 'perky posterior'.
Fans of Emerald Hill will also recognise the series' slow-motion opening sequence set to Kit Chan's Flowers Falling Like Rain. Except in the parody, the reverie is broken by Chin's sharp retort: 'Don't know how to close the door ah?'.
Emerald Hill's original actors such as Tasha Low, Chantalle Ng, Jesseca Liu, Romeo Tan and Zhang Zetong have reacted with laughing emojis.

Seungmin of Stray Kids on his latest campaign with Burberry

We're currently in the throes of summer. Of tank tops, flip flops, colourful popsicles and music festivals all around—especially in Britain, now with the weather on their side. From Glastonbury and Leeds to BST Hyde Park and Isle of Wight, bands and artists have been congregating in a formidable lineup, all to perform live in front of throngs of festival goers. Celebrating the universal phenomenon is Burberry, with its latest campaign 'Burberry Festival'. 'Think of the campaign like a collage,' says chief creative officer, Daniel Lee. 'Candid moments capturing off-duty fans and headline acts in between gigs.' Shot against a set of sound systems by photographer Drew Vickers, the campaign features a cast from the intertwining worlds of music and fashion, including Liam Gallagher and his children, Alexa Chung, Cara Delevingne and South Korean star Seungmin. In this case, art imitates life for the Stray Kids member, who is all too familiar with playing at a music festival with his members. Below, he shares with Vogue Singapore his time shooting for the latest Burberry campaign and what he loves most about music festivals. How would you describe the vibe of the shoot? Everyone was so supportive and really seemed to enjoy and cheer on my energy, which brought me so much strength. I wanted to stay in London longer! Seungmin in 'Burberry Festival'. Courtesy of Burberry Describe your look for the campaign. The classic, vibrant, youthful, and clean Burberry vibe? I feel a bit shy saying it myself… What was the best moment of the day for you? When I took the mic and filmed a performance scene with an Oasis song playing, I really got into it, and I was super happy because everyone seemed to enjoy it! Seungmin behind the scenes of 'Burberry Festival'. Courtesy of Burberry What's the most memorable moment you've had while performing at a music festival? It would be the moment on stage at last year's festival. The memory of performing in front of countless fans with the sunset in the background still remains so clear to me. The sight of the audience's hands glowing in the sunset really tugged at my heart! Accompanied by the band's sound surrounding us, our music felt truly grand. Is there a song that you feel hits differently when performed at a festival? I love performing 'S-Class'. It may be because the song holds a sense of pride, but even when the song isn't in the language of the audience, they still sing along and relate with it, making it feel even more special! View this post on Instagram A post shared by BST Hyde Park (@bsthydepark) You've played some iconic festivals so far, including BST Hyde Park in London. What do you take away from those experiences? It's always so amazing and we are so grateful to see how much love people pour into our music and countless other things even from so far away. Even though we all speak different languages, it seems that our hearts have become similar as they are connected through music! How important are festivals in connecting fans from different parts of the world? Since it's not an opportunity that comes easily, I think the big stage of a music festival is a really important and rare chance for artists to connect with fans.

When two superstars meet, fans can go wild. Jay Chou's recent outing with Japanese singer-actor Tomohisa Yamashita in Kyoto led to the former's makeup artist and friend, Du Guozhang, being caught in the crossfire. In videos posted by fans on Douyin, the King of Mandopop, 46, can be seen exiting what appears to be a restaurant with Tomohisa, 40, surrounded by a large crowd of people as they try to get into a van. Jay posted on his Instagram Story later: "Brother Du broke his bones at two parts of his leg, please say hello from afar, don't follow! "But he's still very humorous, so I'm relieved." Du can be seen in a wheelchair with his left leg in a cast. Jay joked in a follow-up Instagram Story: "I feel bad for Brother Du, but I still want to ask if anyone took a photo of him falling down." Jay shared Instagram posts of himself and Tomohisa in Kyoto over the last few days. [embed] On his second post from June 3, he edited the caption to reiterate: "By the way, if you meet us, please say hello from afar. Yesterday was a bit dangerous." Singer Jessie J reveals breast cancer diagnosis, will take a break to undergo surgery

English pop singer Jessie J said in a video that she had deliberated if she should make her condition public. PHOTO: SCREENGRAB FROM JESSIEJ/INSTAGRAM English pop singer Jessie J took to Instagram on June 4 to reveal that she has been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, and that she will undergo surgery after her scheduled performance at London music festival Capital's Summertime Ball on June 15. Decked in a black tank top and a cap, she said in a video that she had deliberated if she should make her condition public. 'I want to share it with my fans and the people who care about me - and also I'm a sharer. I've always shared everything that I go through in my life. 'I also know how much sharing in the past has helped me with other people giving me their love and support and also their own stories. I'm an open book. It breaks my heart that so many people are going through so much similar and worse – that's the bit that kills me.' The 37-year-old celebrity coach from reality TV singing competitions like The Voice UK (2012 to 2013) and The Voice Australia (2015 to 2016) added: 'It's a very dramatic way to get a boob job. I am going to disappear for a bit after Summertime Ball to have my surgery and I will come back with massive t*** and more music.' In the comments section of her post, English singer-actress Rita Ora, 34, expressed her support: 'My mother had it and I know the surgery and any treatment on this matter is mentally tough so I'm here for you.' Jessie J, known for hit songs like Price Tag (2011) and Bang Bang (2014), previously revealed that she was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in April 2024. Since 2021, she has been in a relationship with Danish-Israeli professional basketball player Chanan Colman, 41. She suffered a miscarriage in 2021, but welcomed their first child, a boy, in May 2023. Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
