NDA candidate Radhakrishnan files nomination papers for vice presidential election
Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan, the NDA Vice-Presidential candidate, on Wednesday filed his nomination papers in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi, flanked by Radhakrishnan and senior leaders from the ruling alliance, handed over four sets of nomination papers to Rajya Sabha Secretary General P C Mody, the returning officer for the election which is scheduled for early next month. Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh (from the JD-U) were the lead proposers. With the numbers tilted in the NDA's favour — it has 423 MPs in both Houses of Parliament, well ahead of the winning mark of 392 votes (the electoral college comprises) of 782 MPs — sources said the occasion was marked by good-natured banter and humour. According to BJP sources, Radhakrishnan has begun canvassing to seek support from ruling NDA MPs and a 'larger outreach' will get underway following the conclusion of parliament's Monsoon session on Thursday. Senior leaders from other NDA allies such as the LJP's Chirag Paswan, JDS's HD Kumaraswamy, RLD's Jayant Chaudhary and TDP's Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu, in addition to BJP bigwigs including J P Nadda, Nitin Gadkari and Bhupender Yadav, were also part of what a BJP source called a 'successful display of a united front' by almost the entirety of the BJP-led NDA Union Cabinet. The PM broke the ice when he said 'bada gambhir mahaul hai' as he entered the chamber of the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha for the official formalities, triggering smiles. According to a senior NDA leader, a lighthearted moment that unfolded during the process was related to the Rs 15,000 proposers' fee. 'The PM asked the Secretary General whether there was a fee, to which the Secretary General replied in the affirmative and informed that it was Rs 15,000. A senior BJP leader told the PM that the fee had been paid,' a source said. In response to this, the source added, Secretary General Mody sought to clarify that the amount would not be returned in case the candidate won, triggering laughs. 'Along with Ministers, Party colleagues and NDA leaders, accompanied Thiru CP Radhakrishnan as he filed his nomination for the post of Vice President of India. The NDA family is confident that he will be an outstanding VP and will enrich our journey towards national progress,' the PM said in a post on X later. The 67-year-old RSS veteran, credited with laying the foundation of the party in his home state of Tamil Nadu, called on former Prime Minister HD Devegowda in addition to interacting with legislators from Maharashtra and Goa on Wednesday evening. According to BJP sources, while Radhakrishnan's campaign manager, the Defence Minister, has spoken to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and his election manager, Parliamentary Affairs minister Kiren Rijiju, has spoken to Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi seeking support for the unanimous election of the NDA's candidate. 'Another round of outreach' seeking support for him will take place till September 9.

India leads the world in AI-driven leadership transformation: Microsoft report
Agency: New Delhi, Aug 20 (PTI) Indian leaders are moving with confidence and urgency to integrate AI across their organisations, with 93 per cent of those surveyed intending to use AI agents to extend workforce capabilities over the next 12-18 months, according to Microsoft's 2025 Work Trend Index. Outlining the country-specific findings from the index, it said that India's most forward-looking organisations, what Microsoft calls Frontier Firms, are leading the charge in reimagining work. 'These firms are not just adopting AI; they're redesigning operations around human-agent collaboration," the company said in a release. With 59 per cent of leaders already using AI agents to automate workstreams or business processes across entire teams, the shift from traditional hierarchies to fluid, adaptive structures is well underway, it said. 'This transformation is enabling organisations to scale with agility, speed, and purpose," it said. Puneet Chandok, President, Microsoft India and South Asia, noted that India is firmly in its AI-first era, with AI agility accelerating at an unprecedented pace. 'We're seeing a workforce that's not just adopting AI, but embedding it into the fabric of everyday work — leveraging its speed, precision, and 24/7 availability to drive meaningful transformation. Leaders are scaling operations with AI emerging as a true thought partner, fuelling creativity, fast-tracking decisions, and redefining collaboration," he said. This shift is turning AI's promise into proof and profitability-powered by productivity, innovation, and a fundamentally new way of working, he pointed out. The sample size of the survey was 31000 participants across 31 countries. The findings were part of the global WTI survey. Is BCCI above national interest? Aaditya on proposed India-Pak match in Asia Cup
Agency: Mumbai, Aug 20 (PTI) Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Wednesday wrote to Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya against a proposed match between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup and asked whether the BCCI is above the national interest. The letter said many nations have been isolated in sports over a cause that is for the greater good of humanity. Terrorism is one such cause that prevents either of our nations from progressing peacefully. In the past decade, time and again, the country and its citizens have faced terrorist attacks based out of Pakistan, and the Union Government has reiterated it constantly, Thackeray stated. Recently, the Prime Minister also said water and blood cannot flow together from the ramparts of the Red Fort. Yet, only because of BCCI's insistence and desire for the money and ad revenue, probably, it holds the 'sindoor", and lives of our jawans as negligible, he said. 'Yet, sadly enough, and shamelessly, the BCCI is sending a team to play Pakistan in the Asia Cup. Is the BCCI above national interest? Is it above the sacrifice of our Jawans? Is it above the Sindoor of those who faced the attack in Pahalgham?" Thackeray said. 'We sent out delegations to the world, saying Pakistan is behind Pahalgam. Now, will we send out delegations to the world to justify why we are playing cricket with them?" Thackeray asked. It is truly a shameful act, when Pakistan has backed out of playing hockey in India, citing security reasons, that the BCCI plays Pakistan for selfish interest, the former Maharashtra minister said. The two marquee India versus Pakistan games will be held in Dubai during the upcoming Asia Cup, which is scheduled to start in the UAE from September 9. India and Pakistan will square off on September 14 in Dubai and one more time, potentially on September 21, at the same venue. The final on September 29 will also be held in Dubai. The tournament will be held in T20I format, keeping in mind the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka early next year.
