Sam LaPorta on Lions New OC John Morton: He's a 'Brilliant Mind'
Among the outgoing faces was offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who became the new head coach of the Chicago Bears. To replace Johnson, the Lions brought in Denver Broncos passing game coordinator John Morton to be their new offensive coordinator.
One of Morton's top players, tight end Sam LaPorta, is a huge fan.
"[Our offense] might be a little bit different. Fortunately, we kept a couple of our position coaches, specifically, our offensive line coach [Frank Haley]," LaPorta said about Detroit's new coaching staff in an interview on "The Jim Rome Show." "We promoted Hank Fraley to our run game coordinator. So, fortunate for me, we have the same run game system this year, the same verbiage, which, as you can imagine, is a lot. But Johnny Mo, pass game coordinator his entire life. Brilliant mind, I think he's gonna call the offense great."
Prior to his two-year stint in Denver under head coach Sean Payton (2023-24), Morton was a senior offensive assistant with the Lions for the 2022 season. He held the same role with the Las Vegas Raiders from 2019-21 and was the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets in 2017, preceded by several other assistant coaching stints.
As for LaPorta, a Pro Bowler in his 2023 rookie campaign, the tight end totaled 60 receptions for 726 yards and seven touchdowns last season. He ranked sixth among tight ends with a 79.1 receiving grade and 10th with a 73.8 overall grade, according to Pro Football Focus.
Last season, Detroit's offense was arguably the best in the sport, as the Lions were first in the NFL with 33.2 points per game, second with both 263.2 passing yards and 409.5 total yards and sixth with 146.4 rushing yards. Five of Detroit's 11 offensive starters were initially invited to the 2025 Pro Bowl Games: quarterback Jared Goff, running back Jahmyr Gibbs, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, tackle Penei Sewell and center Frank Ragnow.
As for other departing coaches, the Lions lost defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who became the head coach of the New York Jets, while defensive line coach Terrell Williams left to be the defensive coordinator of the New England Patriots. Meanwhile, the Lions lost passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand, who became the offensive coordinator for the Jets under Glenn, and wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El and assistant quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett each followed Johnson to the Bears.
This will be Morton's second NFL offensive coordinator gig, previously holding the same role for the Jets in 2017.

Detroit Lions training camp medical preview: Linebackers
Malcolm Rodriguez R ACL injury video-Knee buckles inward-Hope no asso meniscus tear-Expect ~11mo recovery-1yr left on rookie deal The linebackers suffered significant casualties last season as well as a surprise offseason surgery. All that along with Alex Anzalone's contract status means there are a lot of uncertainties going forward. The lack of quality, proven depth could be an issue this season if the starters don't stay healthy. Last season, the Lions kept six LB's on the initial 53-man roster (Anzalone, Jack Campbell, Derrick Barnes, Jalen Reeves-Maybin, Malcolm Rodriguez, Ben Niemann). Here is the list of LB's starting with the players with the biggest medical question marks entering the season. Ages are at the start of the season. #1: Malcolm Rodriguez - 27yo The ACL isn't a long-term concern, but it will keep Rodriguez out for about half this season. He is entering the final year of his 4-year rookie deal so has a lot of motivation to prove recovery. As expected, he was placed on PUP at the start of training camp. Projection: An estimated 11-month recovery would have him return on November 2 vs the Vikings. He may not start looking like his former self until late in the season or 2026 though. #2: Derrick Barnes - 26yo Derrick Barnes R knee injury video-Direct impact to knee, fortunately foot not planted-Looks like lateral side hit which could cause MCL sprain.-Placed on IR. If non-severe MCL, could be back in 4-6wks. An MCL/PCL injury ended his season in Week 3. This offseason, the Lions showed a lot of confidence by giving him a 3-year deal with $16 million guaranteed. Despite his visible right leg atrophy this offseason and a limited participation at OTA last month, he should be ready for the season. He was not placed on PUP at the start of camp which confirms his readiness. Projection: Barnes is in the starting lineup for Week 1. #3: Jack Campbell - 25yo Campbell has played every game in his two-year NFL career. However during OTA, Campbell revealed that he had a minor hip surgery this offseason. He didn't seem too concerned which is reassuring. In related news, Kerby Joseph had hip surgery the previous offseason and then became an All-Pro. Campbell was not placed on PUP at the start of camp which confirms that he is ready. Projection: Campbell starts Week 1 and continues to anchor the middle of the defense. #4: Alex Anzalone - 30yo Alex Anzalone L forearm fracture injury video-Slomo zoom looks like midshaft-Dan Campbell says 6-8wks. MNF vs 49ers 6wks away.-Possibly could be back sooner but no reason to rush with playoffs 8-9wks away-Fully healed for playoffs, no long-term concerns A forearm fracture cost him six games last year, but he was able to return for the final two games. There is no concern with the arm going forward. He has a history of a chronic right shoulder dating back to college but has been playing through that just fine. The main question for Anzalone may be his contract status. He was one of only two players who skipped OTA (Ragnow, retired), and there are multiple hints that he is seeking a new or adjusted deal. He has posted many offseason workout videos suggesting he is healthy and ready for the season. Preparation is the price of opportunity Projection: Even if he holds out all of camp, Anzalone will be a starter in Week 1. #5: DaRon Gilbert - 24yo Last year as an undrafted rookie, Gilbert was waived by the Lions in preseason with an unspecified injury designation. Projection: The lack of young depth means that Gilbert has a shot to make the 53-man roster. #6: Trevor Nowaske - 26yo Nowaske had a concussion in practice last season and missed a game. He played a healthy 349 snaps last season for the Lions on defense, and another 284 on special teams. Projection: He makes the 53-man roster with his experience and youth. #7: Grant Stuard - 26yo The Lions signed Stuard as a free agent this offseason. He has been remarkably reliable being available for every game in his 4-year NFL career. He does have a remote history of a torn meniscus which isn't a significant concern in the short-term. Projection: With a fully-guaranteed, 1-year contract, Stuard will make the 53-man roster. #8: Anthony Pittman - 28yo Pittman joined the Lions late last season and appeared in the final three regular season games. He should be healthy going into the season. Projection: He may compete for a final roster spot. #9: Ezekiel Turner - 29yo Turner got 111 snaps last year on defense with the Lions. Most of his snaps (189) came on special teams. He should be healthy going into the season although his age is nearing 30. Projection: If he makes the team, it will be because of special teams. #10: Zach Cunningham - 30yo Last year with the Broncos, he missed a few games with a hamstring but that's not a concern going forward. Projection: The Lions likely would prefer to stay younger at the LB position.

Shaquill Griffin's new Seahawks jersey number revealed
The Seattle Seahawks officially reunited with cornerback Shaquill Griffin towards the end of June. Griffin, originally a third round selection by Seattle during the 2017 NFL draft, has made his way back to the Emerald City on a one-year deal after four years and four teams away. However, Griffin will be sporting a somewhat new look in his second stint. When he was last with the Seahawks, the Pro Bowler wore the No. 26 jersey, which is currently occupied by running back Zach Charbonnet. This time around, Griffin will be wearing a number with immense history in Seattle... No. 24. There is a considerable portion of the 12th Man that would like to see No. 24 retired permanently by the Seahawks organization. Historically, Seattle has only retired the jerseys of those who went into the Pro Football Hall of Fame primarily as Seahawks - such as Steve Largent, Walter Jones, Cortez Kennedy, and Kenny Easley. But Marshawn Lynch is a different case, as he was truly the face of the organization's rise to national prominence during the Pete Carroll era. His unique personality and bruising playing style has made him a cult classic in the Pacific Northwest. There is of course the Ken Griffey Jr. connection to the number as well, who also wore No. 24. There are just as many Seattle sports fans who would like to see the No. 24 retired city-wide across all the professional teams in the region. But for now, No. 24 will once again take the field in Seattle, and hopefully there's still a little magic left in it for a legacy Seahawk like Shaquill Griffin.

Nuggets expect Jonas Valanciunas to be backup center amid speculation over NBA future
Associated Press DENVER (AP) — A backup plan to bring in a backup center to spell Nikola Jokic no longer appears necessary. The Denver Nuggets expect Jonas Valanciunas to be with the team when the season starts amid speculation over his NBA future. Denver's trade with Sacramento to acquire the 6-foot-11 Valanciunas for Dario Saric became official last weekend. Leading up that, reports emerged of Valanciunas being courted by the Greek EuroLeague club team, Panathinaikos. It's led to a confusing situation given that Valanciunas still has two years remaining on his NBA deal that would pay him a total of more than $20 million. Nuggets executive vice president of basketball operations Ben Tenzer attempted to tamp down any conjecture over Valanciunas' arrival during a news conference Friday that was set up to introduce Cam Johnson. 'There's been nothing but healthy conversations in terms of him honoring his contract and him excited to be a Nugget,' Tenzer said of Valanciunas. So, no concerns that Valanciunas might not be with the Nuggets to start the season? 'No concerns,' Tenzer said. The trade for the 33-year-old Valanciunas looks to be the icing on a productive offseason that saw the front-office tandem of Tenzer and Jonathan Wallace remodel the team. The moves were in the wake of a Game 7 loss to NBA champion Oklahoma City in the second round. The Nuggets also picked up Johnson in a deal that sent Michael Porter Jr. — a key contributor to their title run in 2023 — to Brooklyn. Denver added Bruce Brown, who was part of their championship run, and shooting guard/small forward Tim Hardaway Jr. Tenzer said they've have had productive talks with Valanciunas, who's slated to play for Lithuania at FIBA EuroBasket this summer. Someone from the Nuggets may even venture over there. 'Their plan is for him to get here sooner than later, but still working through that,' Wallace explained. "We'll approach it at that time.' Valanciunas is coming off a season in which he split time between Washington and Sacramento. He averaged 10.4 points, 7.7 rebounds and two assists over 81 games. Denver is counting on him to give Jokic the occasional breather. The 30-year-old Jokic averaged a career-high 36.7 minutes per game last season. A three-time NBA MVP, Jokic turned in a historic season where became the first NBA center to average a triple-double — 29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds and 10.2 assists. His vision and feel for the game could take Johnson's performance to another level. Johnson averaged 18.8 points for the Nets last season. 'His best ability is just understanding where he is in space and where his teammates are in space at all times,' Johnson said of Jokic. 'I find a spot, and there's a high chance that he's going to put the pass on time, on target.' As for where Johnson might live in the Mile High city, he and Porter have chatted about possibly swapping houses. 'I don't know if it will happen, but it's being discussed right now,' Johnson said. 'Obviously, when you get traded, everything's flying around, everything's moving. As the next couple of weeks wind down, we'll start to become a little bit more established in our new markets and figure all that stuff out.' He's already received a warm welcome — and not even in Denver, either. While the former Phoenix Suns forward was having breakfast in Arizona, a table of Nuggets fans recognized him and wished him luck. 'The reception has been incredible,' Johnson said. 'It has been really positive for me.
