Inside huge abandoned UK underground station walked over by millions

Daily Mirror20 hours ago
A creepy underground station that has been left to rot for more than 30 years once played a vital part in protecting Brits from air ride strikes during both World Wars
Beneath the bustling streets of central London lies a 'ghost' station that remains eerily frozen in time. Thousands of Brits walk over this underground hub every single day, completely unaware of the abandoned station below them which has been described as a 'deserted time capsule' in the heart of the city.
Aldwych (also known as Strand) opened up back in 1907, and was once a terminus of the Piccadilly line, serving trains to and from Holborn station. Consisting of two platforms, interconnecting tunnels, and a ticket hall, this disused station played a key role during both World Wars, providing shelters for Londoners desperate to escape air raids.

It was also used to protect some of the nation's most valuable artworks from being destroyed by bombs, including sections of the Elgin Marbles and paintings from the National Gallery.

However, the station was never used by passengers as much as intended, resulting in it permanently closing to the public in 1994. Now, it remains a creepy omen of what once was, and has been used as a filming venue for several iconic films and TV shows, including Sherlock, Luther: The Fallen Sun, Mr Selfridge, 28 Weeks Later, and Netflix's Bodies.
Distinguished by its famous red-tiled façade, Brits can now go on a tour of the station and spot the decades-old posters that still stick to the walls. The original 1907 lifts and vintage tiles have been left abandoned for decades, which makes for a perfect Instagram snap.
"Step back in time and immerse yourself in the beautifully preserved Leslie Green architecture that defined the Edwardian era," states London Transport Museum, a charity dedicated to conserving and sharing London's transport and design heritage.
"Retrace the steps of passengers from over a century ago in the turn-of-the-century ticket hall, step into the original 1907 lifts, and admire vintage tiles and signs dotted throughout the station. Discover how the station's role extended beyond providing safety, with stories of the entertainment and community spirit that kept morale high beneath the city streets."

Tickets to enter Aldwych are priced at £45 for adults and £42 for concessions and children. The tour is open to guests aged 10 and over, and those under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
The guided tour lasts for around 75 minutes and does not offer step-free access. There are 160 steps connecting the entrance at street level to the platforms below, meaning wheelchair users cannot be accommodated. "This tour also takes guests to confined areas and spaces with low lighting and that may be dusty, which may make it unsuitable for people with claustrophobia," London Transport Museum added.

Iconic London nightclub set for one last party before closing its doors for good

An iconic London club that was a 'coming of age' venue for locals is closing for good this month. PRYZM Kingston, which has hosted Stormzy, Rod Stewart and Billie Eilish, is shutting up shop after one last hurrah on July 13. Londoners and music industry insiders have told Metro of their despair that the 18-year-old hotspot and concert venue is having its swan song after more than 20 years. The club on Clarence Street closed its disco room at 3.30am on June 28 but will welcome partygoers for one final night in the main room on July 12. Rob Anderson, who works in the music industry, said PRYZM put Kingston on the map. He told Metro: 'PRYZM Kingston has massively boosted the area when it comes to the music industry. It's hosted everyone from Billie Eilish and Tate McRae to Shania Twain and Stormzy.' For many, though, PRYZM was the moment they first experienced the joys of sipping a vodka Red Bull and partying till the early hours. Nick Wilson, 27, told Metro he used to go as a fresh 18-year-old after school. 'With the Wetherspoons opposite, it was the perfect conveyor belt for an average night out,' he added. 'I think it's definitely a coming-of-age club for the locals at least. 'Lots of people mention it when I talk about Kingston. People travel from the suburbs just to go.' The nightclub's owner, Neos, announced earlier this year that it had submitted plans to convert the Grade II-listed building into two new venues. One will be a 'party bar' called Bonnie Rogues on the ground floor, and a new nightclub called Circuit on the first and second. For Metro lifestyle reporter Jessica Hamilton, it was PRYZM's carpeted and 'sticky' floor which she'll reminisce about most even when a new club comes along. She recalled her visit there for a Sophie Ellis Bextor concert: 'It's a shame it's shutting down because they do so many events there 'It had a really good atmosphere for the gig and was very intimate though.' Club regulars are still waiting to see what happens to the nightlife hotspot next before passing judgment. More Trending Nick said: 'I can't be sad until I see what it turns into, could be better' Russell Quelch, the CEO of Neos, who bought the club after previous owners, Rekom UK, went bust, said they want the site to continue being a night out favourite for Londoners. He added: 'Thousands of people have made memories that will last them a lifetime, from over 20 years of amazing nights out at PRYZM and Oceana before it. 'The closure is the end of a long running chapter for the Kingston club scene, but it's time to look to the future and reimagine what this site could hold, in a fresh new look at nightlife for next generation of UK party lovers.' Superman spotted flying over London as new film set to premiere

Those in the capital who took a look up the Shard will have spotted a hyper-realistic version of the unmistakable superhero, more than 300 metres above ground at the top of the iconic landmark. The sculptural installation marks the first time London's tallest building has hosted a cinematic character in this way, gracing the Shard's spire for an entire day. It stands at 11 feet tall and weighs more than 120kg, and is rigged to the highest points of the world-famous building's exposed spire. With fibreglass body moulded in ECO resin, supported by galvanised steel cables attaching it to the Shard. It took four months to create, with more than 20 people putting in a combined 2,000 hours to get it picture-perfect. New Superman actor David Corenswet was 3D scanned during production, supported by extensive references for the costume and cape. James Gunn, writer and director of Superman and Co-Chairman of DC Studios, said of the stunt: 'To see such a realistic depiction of our Superman displayed on the top of The Shard is mind-blowing." The pose depicts 'Supes' with one leg dynamically bent and head looking down, as if hovering protectively over the capital. Londoners are being invited to 'Look Up' – the tagline of the new movie – to grab a glimpse of the suspended superhero. The enormous Superman will be visible, weather conditions permitting, from up to 40 miles away, tethered to the tallest building in Western Europe. Its welded steel framework was painstakingly put together to highlight the launch of new movie 'Superman', released on Friday July 11. Daniel Fulbrook, head of marketing for Real Estate Management and asset manager of The Shard, said: "Superman has stood as a symbol of hope and heroism for generations — so it feels only fitting that he now watches over London from the top of one of its most iconic landmarks. 'To see him suspended within The Shard's spire is truly surreal. We're incredibly proud to help bring this legendary figure to life in such a bold and breathtaking way." Those looking to spot Superman at the best vantage points for unobstructed views today (Tuesday 1 July) should head to Borough Market, Sumner Street (SE1 9HZ), Southwark Bridge or Stoney St (SE1 9AF)

You Deserve Each Other: Everything To Know About The Upcoming Film Adaptation

Was it just us, or did anyone find Meghann Fahy and Penn Badgley's flirting/arguing on Instagram a little bit strange? Well, it turns out there was a reason for it. The duo are set to star in the upcoming film adaptation of Sarah Hogle's 2020 comedy romance novel You Deserve Each Other . And apparently this isn't the first time the pair have acted together… Eagle-eyed fans of Meghann Fahy – who's currently dating her White Lotus co-star Leo Woodall – have realised that she briefly starred as Devyn in Gossip Girl back in the day. We last saw Meghann Fahy on our screens in the Netflix hit Sirens ©Netflix The novel tells the story of Naomi and Nicholas. To any observer Naomi and Nicholas are the perfect couple, but despite the fact that their wedding is coming up in three short months neither of them are keen to actually make it down the aisle. Cue a series of comical, dramatic and emotional shenanigans as they both attempt to get the other to back out of the wedding and thus bear the brunt of the wedding bill. The reviews of the novel were pretty positive and You Deserve Each Other was nominated for two Goodreads Choice Awards: Best Romance and Best Debut. Author Christina Lauren said of the book, 'This book is the perfect dose of sweet, hilarious joy. It's masterful comedy plus tenderness, unique voice plus rich characters. Nicholas! Swoon! We are in love.' Other than Meghann Fahy as Naomi and Penn Badgley as Nicholas we don't know much about the cast. Safe to say fans are pretty happy with the cast list so far though. One person took to social media to write, 'Talk about a dream cast! Can't wait to see them shine together on screen,' while another said, 'THIS IS EVERYTHING I'VE EVER WANTED.' It has also been confirmed that Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn aka the geniuses behind Never Been Kissed and He's Just Not That Into You are set to direct the feature length film, which they also had a hand in helping write. Penn Badgley's hit Netflix series You came to an end with S5 earlier this year ©Netflix Unfortunately filming hasn't even started yet so we're in for a bit of a wait. As Amazon MGM are the production company behind the rom-com it'll likely be available to watch on Amazon Prime, but it might also get a theatrical release in cinemas.
