Inside Jason Momoa's life from romance with Star Wars icon to horror attack behind facial scar
Jason Momoa's latest series, Chief of War, is a must-see historical saga for fans of the Game of Thrones actor.
From his early roles in shows like Baywatch and Stargate Atlantis, the Hawaiian-American actor has successfully transitioned from the small screen to the big screen, portraying a range of characters from superheroes and villains to warriors of the future.
After memorable performances as Aquaman and Duncan Idaho in Dune, this year he's taken on two very different projects - the video game phenomenon A Minecraft Movie and a passion project he's been developing for the past decade.
Chief of War sees the popular action star step into the shoes of real-life Hawaiian warrior Kaʻiana, who played a pivotal role in Pacific Island history at the turn of the 19th Century.
With an enthralling nine-part series based on Kaʻiana's life set to premiere on Apple TV+ later this week, let's delve into Momoa's life off-screen, reports the Mirror US.
Jason Momoa's romantic history
Momoa's known romantic history kicked off with a relationship with his Baywatch: Hawaii co-star Simmone Jade Mackinnon.
The couple stayed together for six years, got engaged in 2004, but Momoa ended it when he started dating actress Lisa Bonet the following year.
Contrary to reports that Momoa and Bonet wed in 2007, their actual marriage didn't take place until a decade later, in October 2017.
The pair welcomed two children together; daughter Lola Iolani arrived in July 2007, whilst son Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha followed in December 2008. Nakoa-Wolf has recently secured a role in the forthcoming Dune: Part III, mirroring his father's career path after Momoa starred in the original film.
Bonet initiated divorce proceedings against Momoa in January 2024, citing irreconcilable differences. The star is currently dating Andor actress Adria Arjona.
Facial scar
Beyond his flowing locks, facial hair and imposing physique, Momoa is instantly recognisable due to a prominent scar cutting across his left eyebrow.
He's disclosed that he suffered the wound when an individual assaulted him with a pint glass, resulting in an extraordinary 140 stitches during treatment.
Fortunately, he's made peace with the mark, even hinting during a chat with Marilyn Denis that it might have boosted his acting prospects.
Following the assault, his debut audition was for the legendary part of Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones' inaugural series, catapulting him to stardom.
He remembered: "It was one of those bad moments in your life and it turned lemons into lemonade, right?"
Meeting Ozzy Osbourne
Admirers of the iconic Black Sabbath vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, who tragically passed away aged 76 last week, might have been taken aback whilst watching his Back to the Beginning farewell gig in Birmingham on 5th July. The programme was presented by Momoa, who was subsequently spotted headbanging alongside supporters during a performance by fellow metal act Pantera.
The Chief of War actor is renowned as a massive heavy metal enthusiast and reveals he frequently shapes his roles around rock tracks.
He informed MetalSucks, for instance, that Aquaman was inspired by Tool, Metallica and Black Sabbath.
Meeting one of his boyhood heroes, Momoa encountered Ozzy and his spouse Sharon Osbourne behind the scenes prior to his farewell performance and posted a photograph of their encounter as a memorial following his passing.
He posted on Instagram: "Love you @ozzyosbourne All my aloha @sharonosbourne and ohana. So grateful. RIP."

Ozzy Osbourne's cheeky farewell ode to one of most controversial career moments: 'He's had the last laugh'
once said he didn't want to be remembered as the man who bit off the head of a bat... but the acclaimed musician's burial place had a cheeky nod to the infamous moment. The Black Sabbath frontman passed away on July 22 at age 76, and was laid to rest this week on the grounds of his mansion in England. But that means the singer was buried just a stones throw away from multiple bat boxes - man-made structures designed to provide shelter for bats. He had them installed in his Buckinghamshire abode in 2022 - a possible attempt to make amends years after he was slammed by animal rights activists for ripping the head off a bat with his teeth live on stage (which he later defended by saying he thought it was fake). A source close to the singer told the Daily Mail that the irony of him being laid to rest so close to the bat habitats did not go unnoticed amongst his loved ones. 'The subject of the bat boxes in the grounds has prompted some real laughter and joy - something for sure Oz would approve of,' they said. 'You cannot even make it up. He has spent decades being caught up in this drama around bats and animal rights groups - and then he is there at his final resting place in a space used to help encourage bats thrive in the UK countryside. 'It has prompted quite a few laughs and funny reactions. It is like Ozzy had the last laugh.' Ozzy and his wife, Sharon Osbourne, bought the 250-acre estate, known as Welders House, in 1993, and according to the insider, it was a place they often 'escaped' to when they needed a break from fame during the height of his career. '[The mansion] had been where he and Sharon escaped from the showbiz world in the 1990s and 2000s to simply focus on family,' they explained. 'Once again it showed how despite all the amazing rock and roll success and celebrity he had, in his heart he was always a family man.' The Daily Mail has reached out to the Osbourne family for comment. Ozzy announced that he planned moved back to Welders House permanently in 2022 after years of spending most of his time living in Los Angeles. At the time, he had the home revamped, adding the bat boxes, as well as a 'rehabilitation wing' following his Parkinson's disease diagnosis in 2020. Planning documents for a health and welfare exercise suite, a swimming pool, and decking were submitted to the local council in March that year. But his battle with Parkinson's and a crippling fall that exacerbated his old quad bike injury are thought to have delayed his return to the UK. Ozzy famously bit the head off a bat after a fan bizarrely hurled the animal on stage during a Black Sabbath show in January 1982. It's been debated whether or not the creature was alive at the time; Ozzy has claimed that it was and that he needed to be rushed to the hospital for a rabies shot, while audience member Mark Neal, who alleges he was the one to throw it, has insisted it was dead. Either way, Ozzy's mouth was seen filling with blood as the audience watched on in horror, and he never lived down the shocking incident. He has been repeatedly asked about the moment over the years, and he has long insisted that he initially thought the bat was a rubber toy rather than a live animal before he bit it. During a chat with the Los Angeles Daily News in 2020, Ozzy admitted he was worried the moment would become part of his legacy. 'It's not the way I want to be remembered [but] I know I'll be the man that bit the head off the bat,' he said.

Sharon Osbourne's furious X Factor outburst at 'pensioner' who slammed Ozzy
Sharon Osbourne once revealed she hilariously launched a pen at a pensioner who attempted to speak badly of her husband Ozzy while she was on The X Factor Sharon Osbourne once declared war on a "pensioner" who made the decision to have a go at her late husband, Ozzy. Sharon, 72, has never been one to mince her words and during an interview about her return to The X Factor, the music manager opened up about the interaction with the man who bravely attempted to say negative things about her husband Ozzy. In 2013, Sharon left the showbiz industry in shock when she returned to the talent show just six years after she dramatically left the programme. But in true Mrs O style, she didn't hold back when she spoke about one contestant. Speaking on Alan Carr's Chatty Man about the incident, the fiery redhead exclaimed: "I did too!" when asked if it was true she'd launched a pen at the contestant. "And it should have been a knife, really!" she went on to add. It comes after Sharon Osbourne breaks down in tears at Ozzy's funeral in heartbreaking scenes. When asked why she'd launched the pen, Sharon explained: "This old bloke comes in and starts slagging my old man, so I'm like 'Here, what can I throw at you?' so I'm like 'You can f**k off', threw a pen at him. You little f***er!" But when Alan asked why somebody would attempt to disrespect Ozzy in front of Sharon, she fumed: "They know what they're going to get. How dare he! I'm nearly a pensioner, so f**k him!" The clip, which has resurfaced on TikTok, has racked up an impressive 58,000 views and was flooded with comments, with many laughing over Sharon's quick wit. "Sharon Osbourne. What a woman," said one. A second went on to write: "Absolute brilliance, love Sharon." "I want their marriage when I'm older and I won't settle for less," said another. The resurfacing of the clip comes just hours after Sharon sadly buried Ozzy. In keeping with the rockstar's wishes, he was buried in the grounds of his sprawling family home, where he shared many happy memories with Sharon, and where he spent his final weeks. The funeral followed an emotionally-charged day in Birmingham, that saw the Prince of Darkness made one final trip through his home city. Thousands of fans lined the streets to pay their respects and say goodbye as a procession led by Ozzy's hearse travelled from the Aston Villa football ground through the city centre. In moving scenes, the procession stopped outside the Black Sabbath bridge, where the frontman's wife and children stepped out of their cars to lay down roses wrapped in black paper among the sea of tributes left by fans. Ozzy's widow, Sharon, was seen for the first time since his death and was overcome by emotion as she took in the outpouring of love for her husband. As she broke down in tears, Sharon was comforted by children Jack, Kelly, and Aimee. The grandchildren of Sharon and Ozzy were also close by for the family moment. Last week, the Osbourne family announced that Ozzy had died at the age of 76, just days after he appeared on stage at his farewell Back to the Beginning concert, in his beloved hometown of Birmingham. In a statement, the Osbourne family, including Kelly and Sharon, had said: "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. "He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis."
