Nightclub owner arrested following deadly roof collapse which killed 236 people
The owner of a nightclub whose roof collapsed and killed 236 people has been arrested along with his sister.
Santo Domingo 's iconic Jet Set nightclub was packed with government officials, musicians, and retired Major League Baseball players when its roof collapsed on 8 April.
Dominican Republic's Attorney General's Office shared on Thursday that Antonio Espaillat and Maribel Espaillat have been arresed, but have not been charged in the case.
Authorities have 48 hours to present any charges before a judge.
The Dominican Republic's Attorney General's Office said in a statement: 'Both defendants displayed immense irresponsibility and negligence by failing to physically intervene to prevent the club's roof from collapsing, as it ultimately did, causing 236 deaths and more than 180 injuries'.
Prosecutors accused the Espaillats of trying to intimidate or manipulate company employees, adding that they could serve as witnesses in the case.
An attorney for the Espaillats could not be immediately reached for comment. The Espaillats were arrested after being interrogated for several hours.
A government-appointed committee that includes international experts is still investigating what caused the roof to collapse.
Crews worked for 53 hours nonstop after arriving on the scene in Santo Domingo shortly after midnight on April 8, rescuing 189 survivors.
The victims included beloved singer Rubby Pérez, who was performing when the roof caved in, and Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi province and sister of seven-time Major League Baseball All-Star Nelson Cruz.
Also killed was former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel, who was pulled from the debris but died at a hospital, and Dominican baseball player Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera.
Other victims include a retired UN official, New York -based fashion designer Martín Polanco, an Army captain who left behind four young girls, and three employees at Grupo Popular, a financial services company, including the president of AFP Popular Bank and his wife.
The club, which had operated for nearly five decades, was known for its Monday night merengue parties that attracted international celebrities and high-profile Dominicans.

The Copa Copana Water Park in Athens was the site of one of the grimmest amusement park disasters in 2014 when a boy died while enjoying one of its attractions. What promised to be a fun day out at the park, spanning 30,000 square metres, ended in tragedy as the 13-year-old and his sister, nine, were swept up by a gust of wind while playing inside a large inflatable ball. They were flung from the surface of a pool about 30 metres into a metal barrier and rushed immediately to Agia Sofia Children's Hospital in Greece 's capital. The boy died shortly after, having suffered severe head injuries, after doctors failed to resuscitate him, while his sibling was left critically injured and diagnosed with severe lung contusion. Copa Copana's two managers were arrested in relation to the incident and officers commenced an investigation into whether safety issues played a role in the tragedy. Greek police concluded the disaster was a result of both 'bad weather conditions and human error' and the park was swiftly closed for good. Now a group of urban explorers have headed back to the park and discovered a creepy site, with the attraction's rides and slides still up, but barely a soul around. Nature has well and truly taken control of the abandoned park, with huge spiralling plants intertwined with the twists and turns of the various defunct flumes. With the facility tucked in between a hillside and a main road, the YouTubers, whose account Urbandoned has 138,000 subscribers, attempt to sneak into the site round the back. After a walk through a forest of thick trees, the duo eventually see an abandoned ride peeking out from the undergrowth. The park is well protected, with a layer of razor wire coating a fence and a small surrounding road, seemingly used by security staff. They eventually squeeze beneath a small gap in the fence before exploring the spooky site. Discarded piping and metal cover the park's grounds with thick weeds and plants dispersed between what were once incredibly popular rides. Drone footage shows the slides gathering rust and moss and pools of stagnant water, filled with tadpoles, sitting in sections of the facility. A climb to the top of one of the flumes offers expansive views of the surrounding mountains, city and the meandering metal rides. As he walks down a path, overgrown with towering green plants, one of them describes Copa Copana as 'an actual jungle'. The narrator explains that the park in its heyday boasted 13 rides as well as cafes and restaurants. Bizarrely, they spot dozens of sun loungers and outdoor tables stowed away beneath one of the slides, a reminder of the fun experiences once had at the site. It turns out they are not the first explorers to visit the abandoned park, with several rides seen covered in graffiti, sprayed on in the years since they were drained out. A trip up a few flights of creaky stairs to the highest point in the facility allows one of the YouTubers to even get a spectacular view of the ocean, as well as the vast extent of the creepy site. Poignant archive footage then shows Copa Copana at its happy peak several decades before, with hundreds of children and parents enjoying its attractions. The group are initially surprised by the lack of security at the abandoned site but it turns out the guard had been resting on a sun lounger before ambling towards them. The friendly member of staff allows them to stroll to the part of the park they have not yet seen as long as they then head for the exit. Eerily, some of the lifeguard chairs and even cafe menus remain left exactly where they stood during Copa Copana's operational days.

HEARTBREAKING tributes have poured in for a mum-of-four who was killed in a tragic tandem sky dive jump. Emergency services rushed to Dunkeswell Airfield in Devon on Friday but two skydivers were both pronounced dead at the scene. 5 5 5 Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that families of the skydivers had been informed and investigations into the incident were underway. Now, heartfelt tributes have poured in for two people including mum-of-four Belinda Taylor. Her eldest son Connor Bowles told DevonLive: "On Friday, June 13, our family lost our mum Belinda Taylor. "She was a mother of four children, three adult boys and one teenage girl, and a grandmother to two young children. "She was a selfless woman who wanted only the best for others and especially her loved ones. She will be deeply missed and will leave an everlasting impression on all those she has met in life. "We as a family would like to ask for peace and privacy during this time whilst we grieve our loss and remember our mum as we should do. "We would finally like to thank the police and investigators for the help they have already provided and the support that has been offered by them.' Cops asked anyone with information on the tragedy to get in touch. British Skydiving Chief executive Robert Gibson confirmed that a probe had been launched and his organisation was assisting authorities. In a statement he said: "Today British Skydiving has been notified of a tragic accident in which two jumpers lost their lives. "Our deepest condolences go to their families, friends and the entire skydiving community. "A British Skydiving Board of Inquiry will investigate the accident. "Once complete, a report will be submitted to the coroner, the police, the CAA, the British Skydiving Safety & Training Committee (STC) and any other relevant authorities. "No further details will be provided at this time. We respectfully ask for privacy for all those affected at this difficult time." Local charity Devon in Sight told how it had suspended its upcoming skydiving events while the investigation was ongoing. CEO Grahame Flynn said: "Having undertaken two skydive challenges in 2018 and 2022 I know how meticulous the team at Skydive Buzz are in their training. "In view of this tragic news our events planned for Saturday 21st June, Wednesday 25th June and Saturday 5th July are suspended pending investigation. "Our Jump for Sight Challenges have raised significant funds for our work over the years. "At this time our thoughts are with the instructor and student who lost their lives and their families, friends and colleagues.' 5 5
