Kolkata gang-rape: BJP fact-finding team recommends central agency probe
Alleging a deteriorating law-and-order situation in the Trinamool Congress-ruled West Bengal, it has also recommended that a request be made to the Centre for some "effective measures" to control the situation in the state, said former Union minister and ex-Mumbai police chief Satya Pal Singh.
He made the remark at a press conference on Tuesday as part of the fact-finding team.
The four-member team comprising BJP MP and former Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra, and former Union minister Meenakshi Lekhi, besides Satya Pal Singh, submitted its report to party president J P Nadda here on Tuesday.
Sharing with the media the findings of the BJP panel, Singh said there were questions on the registration of the case and its investigation by the Kolkata Police. He alleged that the handwritten complaint submitted by the victim had been tampered with to remove the names of the accused she had mentioned.
"Police erased the names of the accused that the victim had given in her handwritten complaint and put in letters J, G, S, M in place of those names. When the police have tampered with the complaint itself, which is the basic document in the case, how can one hope that the victim and her family will get justice?"
He said the committee has recommended that either a probe by a central agency be initiated or a high-level independent inquiry by persons of repute be instituted to ensure justice to the victim and her family.
Mishra claimed the Kolkata Police Commissioner (Manoj Jha) was evasive in his reply when the enquiry committee asked him to clarify why names were erased and some letters were put in their place.
The Kolkata Police's actions, like "tampering with the FIR and swift arrest of four accused", raise a big suspicion, he said.
Singh said the BJP committee noted growing atrocities and crimes against women in West Bengal and police inaction in many such cases. "There is a total collapse of law and order in West Bengal," he said.
Slamming the ruling Trinamool Congress over the law student's gang-rape, Deb demanded that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee take responsibility for the incident. "She has no right to continue in her post," he said.

The landmark bill aims to set the framework for transparent and fair functioning of National Sports Federations (NSFs) and promote athletes' welfare as well as ethical practices in sport. It also aims to introduce measures for better resolution of administrative disputes. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The Sports Ministry plans on bringing about the changes by setting up a National Sports Board, which will have the authority to act on a host of issues including financial mismanagement and or dodgy elections and will even have the authority to suspend federations for failure to comply. What's unique about this bill is the fact that it finally brings the powerful Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which has long maintained autonomy, under government's ambit. How will the National Sports Governance Bill affect the BCCI? The biggest takeaway from the new Bill tabled in Lok Sabha on Wednesday is that the BCCI will finally be treated like any other NSF. The cricket board, which doesn't receive government funding, wasn't considered an NSF until 2019, and had only come under the RTI Act in the year 2020. The NSG Bill, however, automatically deems the BCCI an NSF, meaning it will come under the purview of the Sports Ministry's rules and guidelines. The BCCI, which is registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, 1975 and is in charge of running the sport in India, both at a domestic as well as international level, will thus have to comply with the 'law of the land' even if they don't take a cent from the government in terms of funding. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and vice-president Rajeev Shukla, meanwhile, have stated that the board will be studying the Bill in detail after it's tabled in the Parliament for more clarity. Their inclusion in the list of NSFs comes at a time when cricket returns to the Olympic programme after more than a century at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, as well as at a time when the Government is eyeing hosting the 2036 Olympics in Ahmedabad.

India tied up with over 60 nations for space tech, satellite communication: Jitendra Singh
New Delhi: India has partnered with more than 60 nations for space technologies and satellite communication, said Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, in the Parliament's ongoing Monsoon Session on Wednesday. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Singh shared details of India's space technology collaborations as well as support given to the private sector to launch large-scale missions in space. 'Space cooperative documents have been signed with 61 countries and five multilateral bodies. The major areas of collaborations are satellite remote sensing, satellite navigation, satellite communication, space science, planetary exploration, and capacity building,' Singh said. He noted that the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is already working with NASA for NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar), slated to launch later this month. The Indian space agency is also working with CNES (French National Space Agency) for a joint satellite mission named 'TRISHNA (Thermal Infrared Imaging Satellite for High Resolution Natural Resource Assessment)', which is in the initial stages. ISRO and JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) have carried out a feasibility study to realise a joint lunar polar exploration mission. ISRO also collaborated with NASA and Axiom Space for sending its astronaut to the International Space Station, Singh said. Further, the MoS highlighted the opening up of the space industry to the private sector and the launch of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe), enabling the latter to launch large-scale space missions. He also mentioned the rollout of the Indian Space Policy, 2023, to foster a thriving space ecosystem. In addition, various schemes such as the technology adoption fund, venture capital fund for the space sector, seed fund scheme, pricing support, mentorship, and technical labs were introduced to support startups and Non-Governmental Entities (NGEs) in the space sector. The government also 'signed 79 MoUs with NGEs and issued 77 authorisations' till March, Singh said.

Col Sofiya Qureshi remarks row: Plea in SC seeks removal of MP Minister Vijay Shah
New Delhi: Congress leader Jaya Thakur has moved a plea before the Supreme Court seeking removal of Madhya Pradesh Tribal Welfare Minister Vijay Shah for his controversial remark against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, the Indian Army officer who briefed the media throughout Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. As per the writ petition by the Congress leader, Shah, who is the BJP MLA from Harsood Assembly seat, had, by referring to Colonel Qureshi as the 'sister of the terrorists', violated the oath taken under Article 164(3) of the Constitution. It claimed that the minister's distasteful remarks encouraged "feelings of separatist activities by imputing separatist feeling to anyone who is Muslim, which thereby endangers the sovereignty or unity and integrity of India". In controversial remarks about Operation Sindoor, Shah had reportedly said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had sent a "sister from the same community" as those in Pakistan to avenge the April 22 terror strike in Kashmir's Pahalgam, sparking nationwide outrage. The Madhya Pradesh High Court, in an order passed on May 14, suo moto (on its own cause) had ordered the state Director General of Police to register an FIR against Shah within four hours and warned the top police official of contempt action in case of any delay in compliance. Challenging the FIR registered under Sections 152, 196(1)(b), and 197 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the BJP leader approached the Supreme Court seeking quashing of the criminal case. In a partial relief to the MP minister, the apex court protected him from any coercive action, including arrest, subject to the condition that he should join and fully cooperate with the investigation. It had ordered the DGP to form a SIT (Special Investigation Team) of three senior IPS officers of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, including a woman IPS officer, to probe the matter. However, a bench headed by Justice Surya Kant had then declined to entertain an application filed by Jaya Thakur, who alleged that Shah had breached his constitutional oath by delivering a "hate speech"." Asking her not to "politicise" the issue, the bench, also comprising Justice Dipankar Datta, had asked the Congress leader to "avail appropriate independent remedy".
