Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 75: a history of the number and who wore it best

USA Today24-06-2025
The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we're at 75 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we're taking a look at the history of No. 75 and the players who wore it best.
Current Steelers No. 75 wearer: N/A
There isn't a current wearer of No. 75 on the Steelers roster — and for good reason. The jersey was officially retired in 2014 out of respect for arguably the greatest defender in Pittsburgh history.
Last five Steelers to wear No. 75:
Best No. 75 in Steelers history: DT Joe Greene
There's no debating this jersey number — 'Mean' Joe Greene was the greatest Steeler to ever don No. 75. Greene, who played with the Steelers from 1969 to 1981, is widely regarded as the cornerstone of the Steel Curtain defense — considered one of the greatest defensive units in NFL history, which led Pittsburgh to four Super Bowl titles. While sacks didn't become an official statistic until 1982, Greene's unofficial 77.5 sacks would have ranked as the fourth-most by a Steeler all-time, behind James Harrison, Cam Heyward, and T.J. Watt. He is the only Steeler to have won the Defensive Player of the Year twice, and he has been named All-Pro eight times. Greene is not only one of the greatest Steelers of all time — his impact changed the Steel City brand of sports forever.

ESPN unveils ceiling, floor predictions for 49ers in 2025 season

After plummeting to the NFC West cellar with a 6-11 finish in 2024, San Francisco is eyeing a bounce-back season toward title contention. Though 2024 went haywire in a hurry, the 49ers are just one season removed from a Super Bowl trip. San Francisco reloaded with 11 2025 NFL draft picks, including their first five choices on the defensive side of the football. The 49ers need several of their key offensive skill pieces to get healthy, but the return of running back Christian McCaffrey should help San Francisco rebound toward its heights as the No. 3 scoring offense in 2023. How big of a bounce-back can the 49ers author in 2025, though? ESPN took a look at each team's 2025 floor and ceiling. According to ESPN's Nick Wagoner, the 49ers floor is 7-10 and its ceiling is 12-5. ESPN cited its youth movement as the 49ers' biggest 2025 X-factor. Can the many young players the 49ers are counting on take a step forward and produce quickly? The Niners said goodbye to nearly 20 players via free agency, release or trade, and they didn't spend much on signing outside players to fill those gaps. Instead, the Niners are counting on an 11-player draft class and plenty of other young veterans to become full-time starters or key reserves. San Francisco is banking on star-level production from its elite players, but it could easily have as many as seven first- or second-year players starting on defense. The Niners will need at least some of those guys to make a big leap in order to return to contender status. - Wagoner, ESPN The 49ers have been pleased with what they've seen from their crop of rookies so far, but the true test is just several short weeks away. If multiple rookies emerge as big-time players, then San Francisco has an avenue right back toward contention. But, counting on rookies is no sure bet, hence the great variance between the 49ers' 2025 ceiling and floor.

49ers signing pair of veteran pass rushers after successful workouts

The San Francisco 49ers continue to struggle to keep their players on the field, as they placed defensive end Bradlee Anae on injured reserve on Wednesday, which will end his 2025 season before it even begins. With a hole in the edge defender room, the 49ers held workouts on Wednesday for a trio of veterans - Keshawn Banks, William Bradley-King and Demone Harris. According to KPRC2's Aaron Wilson, San Francisco is signing Bradley-King and Harris. Bradley-King, 27, played collegiately at Arkansas State from 2016-19, earning All-Sun Belt honors twice before transferring to Baylor for his final season. The Washington Commanders (then Football Team) took him in the seventh round (No. 240 overall) of the 2021 NFL draft. He spent parts of three seasons in Washington, two with the New England Patriots and one with the Miami Dolphins, recording seven tackles and a half-sack in four career games (all with Washington). Harris, 29, spent his college career at Buffalo from 2013-17, earning All-Mac honors once. He signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and has since spent time with the Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs (winning a Super Bowl), Houston Texans and Atlanta Falcons. In 23 career games, he's recorded 22 tackles (three for a loss), four quarterback hits and two passes defensed. With wide receiver Malik Turner taking Anae's spot on the roster, the 49ers will have to make two more moves before they can officially bring in Bradley-King and Harris. Before these two transactions, their edge defender group consists of Nick Bosa, Mykel Williams, Yetur Gross-Matos, Bryce Huff, Robert Beal, Sam Okuayinonu, Jonathan Garvin, Trevis Gipson and Jaylon Allen. More 49ers: Aging 2-time All-Pro WR would help banged up receiving corps

Raiders applying advice from 11-time champion

When champions speak on how they got to the top of the mountain, you listen. It's the reason why the Raiders organization is making full use of any advice seven-time Super Bowl winning QB Tom Brady has to offer. But there is a man who is even more accomplished than even Brady in his given sport. And Pete Carroll is using his words to try and inspire his players to greatness. Carroll has coached in the NFL and at the collegiate level for a long time. He's always one of those guys who can strike up a good conversation with just about anyone. This includes professional athletes from many different sports. Raiders tigh end Michael Mayer said this week that Carroll has been using words NBA legend Bill Russell once told him as a way to get his players in the right mindset to be winners. "'Every day when I wake up, I try to find ways to help my teammates,' Mayer said, quoting Carroll quoting Russell. "He said every day he wakes up and he's not thinking about himself. He's not thinking about what he can do to help the team. It's how can I get my teammates better? And I think literally like 12 years in a row he led his team in assists and did a bunch of crazy stuff. And that was a pretty cool story to hear. That's what we're trying to build here. That's the culture we're trying to build here. I want to help Brock [Bowers] out as much as I can. He wants to help me out. Geno [Smith] wants to help us. I mean, when your teammates are playing good, you're playing good, the offense is playing good, and the team's playing good. So we're all in this together." Russell used this philosophy to lead the University of San Francisco to two NCAA titles and then the Boston Celtics to 11 NBA championships in 13 seasons. And unbelievable run. Mayer isn't the only one with whom Russell's words have resonated. Several players on this team have talked about how much closer they are as teammates than they had been in previous years. How they are all having a lot more fun playing for each other and the camaraderie that goes with that. Carroll has used this philosophy to win championships at the collegiate and the NFL level, just as Russell did. Tried and true.
