'How to Train Your Dragon' tops the U.S. box office as 'Elio' marks a new low for Pixar

NBC News23-06-2025
NEW YORK — Neither Pixar nor zombies were enough to topple "How to Train Your Dragon" from the No. 1 slot at North American box offices over the weekend. The Universal Pictures live-action remake remained the top film, bringing in $37 million in ticket sales in its second weekend, despite the sizeable new releases of "Elio" and "28 Years Later." , according to studio estimates Sunday. "How To Train Your Dragon" has rapidly amassed $358.2 million worldwide.
Six years after its last entry, the Dean DeBlois-directed "How To Train Your Dragon" has proven a potent revival of the DreamWorks Animation franchise. A sequel is already in the works for the $150 million production, which remakes the 2010 animated tale about a Viking boy and his dragon.
Pixar's "Elio" had a particularly tough weekend. The Walt Disney Co. animation studio has often launched some of its biggest titles in June, including "Cars," "WALL-E" and "Toy Story 4." But "Elio," a science fiction adventure about a boy who dreams of meeting aliens, notched a modest $21 million, the lowest opening ever for Pixar.
"This is a weak opening for a new Pixar movie," said David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm FranchiseRe. "These would be solid numbers for another original animation film, but this is Pixar, and by Pixar's remarkable standard, the opening is well below average."
"Elio," originally set for release in early 2024, had a bumpy road to the screen. Adrian Molina — co-director of "Coco" — was replaced mid-production by Domee Shi ("Turning Red") and Madeline Sharafian. Back at Disney's D23 conference in 2022, America Ferrera appeared to announce her role as Elio's mother, but the character doesn't even exist in the revamped film.
Disney and Pixar spent at least $150 million making "Elio," which didn't fare any better internationally than it did in North America, bringing in just $14 million from 43 territories. Pixar stumbled coming out of the pandemic before stabilizing performance with 2023's "Elemental" ($496.4 million worldwide) and 2024's "Inside Out 2" ($1.7 billion), which was the company's biggest box office hit.
"Elemental" was Pixar's previously lowest earning film, launching with $29.6 million. It rallied in later weeks to collect nearly half a billion dollars at the box office. The company's first movie, "Toy Story," opened with $29.1 million in 1995, or $60 when adjusted for inflation. It remains to be seen whether "Elio's" decent reviews and "A" from CinemaScore audiences can lead it to repeat "Elemental's" trajectory.
With most schools on summer break, the competition for family audiences was stiff. Disney's own "Lilo & Stitch," another live-action remake, continued to pull in young moviegoers. It grossed $9.7 million in its fifth weekend, bringing its global tally to $910.3 million. .
"28 Years Later" signaled the return of another, far gorier franchise. Director Danny Boyle reunited with screenwriter Alex Garland to resume their pandemic apocalypse thriller 25 years after "28 Days Later" and 18 years after its sequel, "28 Weeks Later."
The Sony Pictures release opened with $30 million. That was good enough to give Boyle, the filmmaker of "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Trainspotting," the biggest opening weekend of his career. The film, which cost $60 million to make, jumps ahead nearly three decades from the outbreak of the so-called rage virus for a coming-of-age story about a 12-year-old (Alfie Williams) venturing out of his family's protected village. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes co-star.
Reviews have been good (90% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) for "28 Years Later," though audience reaction (a "B" CinemaScore) is mixed. Boyle has more plans for the zombie franchise, which will next see the release of "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" next year from director Nia DaCosta.
"28 Years Later" added another $30 million in 59 overseas markets.
After its strong start last weekend with $12 million, A24's "Materialists" held well with $5.8 million in its second weekend. The romantic drama by writer-director Celine Song and starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans has collected $24 million so far.
Next weekend should also be a competitive one in movie theaters, with both "F1," from Apple and Warner Bros., and Universal's "Megan 2.0" launching in cinemas.

Here's 2025's best family movie of the year (and it's not KPop Demon Hunters)

KPop Demon Hunters proved to be one of Netflix's biggest successes this year, with the animated musical not only dominating global streaming charts but also the Billboard Hot 100 with songs like 'Golden' and 'Soda Pop'. Beloved by K-pop listeners and novices alike, KPop Demon Hunters deservedly earned a spot on Time Out's list of the best family movies of 2025 (so far). From the Chinese blockbuster Ne Zha 2 to A Minecraft Movie, this year has offered us plenty of family-friendly options to catch up on. But perhaps the most impactful of them all has been a relatively low-budget feature from Latvia. We're talking about Flow, an animated odyssey of a cat and his new furry friends as they brave a flood in a creaky wooden boat. That simple premise is elevated by director Gints Zilbalodis's vision and animals that transcend languages and global borders. Flow opened in cinemas early this year and went on to win Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, cutting above big studio nominees like Disney's Inside Out 2 and DreamWorks's The Wild Robot. What makes Flow 's win all the more commendable is that the entire film was designed and animated in the free-to-use online software Blender. In fact, the Latvian filmmaker and animator even gave a shout-out to Blender during his acceptance speech. With children's animation traditionally relying on talking animals and cartoonish mannerisms, Flow is slightly unconventional in the sense that it emphasises hyper-realistic sounds and movements of its animals. The result is a hard-hitting watch without any spoken dialogue, further enhanced by the ambient, minimalist score co-composed by Zilbalodis himself. But with that being said, there's also plenty of fun to be had with Flow for younger audiences. The feline protagonist's curiosity leads him to a sleepy, Zen-like capybara, a hyperactive Labrador, and a kleptomaniac lemur. The talkless banter between the cat's four-legged companions, along with the visually immersive Blender worlds, makes Flow the finest family movie of the year. Quite the relaxing antidote to an overstimulated, screen-addicted generation.

Meredith Kercher's family lawyer slams Amanda Knox over new Disney murder drama

Francesco Maresca, the lawyer for the family of Meredith Kercher, has expressed his disgust at a new eight-part show dramatising the Brit student's horrific 2007 murder Meredith Kercher's family lawyer has launched a blistering broadside against Amanda Knox following the release of the American's new Disney series. ‌ The 38-year-old has executive-produced KJ Steinberg's eight-parter, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, which is based closely on her memoir. Actress Grace Van Patten plays Knox in the Disney-owned Hulu series. Now, following the show's New York premiere on Tuesday, for which the American appeared on the red carpet grinning alongside Monica Lewinsky, attorney Francesco Maresca has hit out. ‌ He told the Mirror: 'The important thing is that Amanda Knox clearly wants this case to continue. It would be nice and dignified to watch a program or TV show where everything is reconstructed, remembering the life and smile of poor Meredith." ‌ Mr Maresca added: 'Instead, once again, we have to witness an attempt to reshuffle the cards, and where the trailer states, 'Amanda fights tirelessly to prove her innocence and regain her freedom'. Once again, the focus is on Knox.' When the show was first announced last year, Meredith's sister Stephanie said: 'It is difficult to understand how this serves any purpose.' At the time, Mr Maresca said Knox's projects continued to be 'inappropriate and disrespectful towards the memory of Meredith,' claiming the Perugia trial had become a vehicle for Knox to monetise her notoriety. 'Mrs Knox, after so many years, should respect the silence and memory,' he said, as filming took place in the Italian town where the 21-year-old was killed. In November 2007, Leeds University student Meredith was sexually assaulted before her throat was slashed and she was stabbed 47 times while studying in Perugia. Her flatmate Knox and her then-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were initially convicted of her murder along with drifter Rudy Guede. ‌ The couple were found guilty in 2009 but freed on appeal two years later. Their guilty verdict was reinstated in 2014 but quashed by Italy's top court in March 2015. Mum-of-two Knox has since capitalised on her experience, writing a book, recording numerous podcasts, and making several speaking appearances, some in Italy. Despite the objections from locals in Perugia and those close to Meredith, Knox pressed ahead with the series, with Lewinsky acting as executive producer. ‌ Their initial friendship, formed in 2017 at a speaking event two years after Italy's highest court cleared Knox and Sollecito, has developed into a professional partnership. This week, ahead of the premiere, she also spoke about explaining the case to her four-year-old daughter, Eureka, telling her: 'It's very simple. When Mommy was young, Mommy went to Italy, and she made friends and she had fun, but then someone hurt her friend, and the police thought Mommy hurt her friend, and so they put Mommy in jail. "Mommy was in jail for a long time, and she was very sad. But then one day, Mommy proved that she was innocent, and she got to go home, and then she met your daddy and had you and lived happily ever after.' Critics say the Hulu series and Knox's repeated public retellings amount to a relentless attempt to monetise a tragedy in which she was tangentially involved, rather than a genuine reckoning. Others have questioned whether such projects serve any purpose beyond self-promotion, noting the continued pain for Meredith's family and the sensationalism of revisiting the widely reported case. Guede was released after serving 13 years and has since been investigated for allegedly physically and sexually assaulting a former girlfriend since being freed.
