Metcalfe left to rue what might have been after Italy loss

It was a game that neither team deserved to lose, but ultimately Wales came up just short despite bagging four tries of their own through Molly Wakely, Savannah Picton-Powell, Seren Singleton and Chiara Pearce.

But Wales were punished by their opponents for their ill-discipline, as a series of penalties helped Italy, including with Cheli's final score.
'I'm really disappointed with our discipline to be honest,' said Metcalfe.
'I know we can do a lot better than that. It's a shame we couldn't finish it off today. Our intent was great. We worked really hard, and I can't fault the girls' effort. It's just silly penalties in the end that let us down.'
Having fallen behind to Elena Errichiello converted try, Wakely breached the Italian backline on 25 minutes to get Wales on the scoreboard.
Wales then took the lead 10 minutes later through the dangerous Picton-Powell.
Cheli put Italy back in control at 14-12 but Singleton finished off a brilliantly worked move to swing the pendulum back in Wales's favour.
Italy's physical prowess has been a strength of theirs through this Women's Summer Series and Cheli was able to score a virtually identical second try to her first – burrowing over off the back of a ruck – to hand back the initiative to the team in blue.
Much like a heavyweight slugfest, both teams continued to trade blows, and Pearce landed the next telling shot, dotting down to edge Wales back in front for a third time on 64 minutes.
However, Cheli's third close-range try with six minutes to go, and Lavinia Pratichetti 100% conversion record, proved decisive in one of the games of the competition.
The result means Wales finish the Women's Summer Series with a record of two defeats and one win having lost to Ireland 27-10 in their first game before bouncing back against Scotland, winning 52-29 on matchday two.

Game of Thrones star Hafthor Bjornsson beats Eddie Hall's monstrous deadlift world record as rival posts classy response

HAFTHOR BJORNSSON made weightlifting history by SMASHING former rival Eddie Hall's deadlift record. The 2018 World's Strongest Man winner looked to make history last Sunday with a Herculean 505kg (1111lbs) deadlift. 4 4 4 Bjornsson sought to break the 500kg (1100lbs) record that fellow former WSM winner Hall set in March 2015. The Icelandic giant, who is best known for playing 'The Mountain' in the hit HBO show ' Game of Thrones ', had previously broken the record in 2020. Bjornsson's 501kg lift, however, was disputed by many, including Hall, as he performed it in his own gym and not in a competition setting. But there was no disputing his mammoth 505kg lift at the 2025 Eisenhart Black Competition, which has gone viral. Bjornsson pulled the titanic amount of weight with near-perfect form, barely arching his back and not pausing as he completed the lift. The 36-year-old was mobbed by his pals after the lift, which he took to Instagram to reflect on. He wrote: "505kg WORLD RECORD! History made again." 4 In fact, he was quick to praise Bjornsson for his incredible feat of strength. Posting a video of the lift to his Instagram, Hall wrote: "Massive respect to Thor for making history & setting the official WR at 505kg. "That's one hell of a pull. Records are made to be broken. "Big respect, Big Love The Beast."

Lionesses penalty hero reveals when England stars learned about Lucy Bronze's broken tibia

England right-back Lucy Bronze soldiered on with a fractured tibia and helped the Lionesses come through a gruelling set of knockout games to win the European Championships England star Niamh Charles didn't lose faith for a second as the Lionesses beat Spain in the Euro 2025 final. Charles scored from the spot in a 3-1 shoot-out win after a 1-1 draw at St Jakob-Park in Basel. The full-back hasn't started a game in Switzerland but made two crucial contributions during the knockout stages. ‌ She cleared an extra-time Lina Hurtig header off the line in the quarter-final victory over Sweden. And then the Chelsea defender beat Spanish keeper Cata Coll from 12 yards on Sunday. ‌ 'That's kind of been how we've experienced the whole tournament, 120 minutes - we were just saying we had that complete belief that however late it went, however long it went on it's just the belief in the squad that we always had a moment in us and always had that fighting spirit," Charles said. 'That's something we've referenced so much, that proper English.' ‌ Charles said England's players were given a reminder of their best moments from the tournament, including that clearance against Sweden. 'When we were shown loads of things, everyone has had a moment or a part to play and that makes me so proud,' she said. 'From the staff to the players everyone has played their part and thoroughly deserves this.' Charles replaced Lucy Bronze on Sunday, and it later emerged that experienced right-back Bronze has been playing the tournament with a broken tibia. 'It's something we've known about in camp but I think she's very good and she just gets on with it and no one really truly knows how much she's dealing with,' the substitute said. 'To play on that is pretty incredible but if there was anyone to do it it would have been her. [That's] proper proper English. Once we win we can talk about it but it's absolutely job done first, and she's a credit to that and an England legend.' It's not just Charles who has been at ease even when England have found themselves against the ropes. Lionesses manager Sarina Wiegman has appeared remarkably calm throughout the journey, even when her team needed a last-gasp Michelle Agyemang equaliser to take their semi-final against Italy to extra-time. ‌ 'I am pretty calm during the games,' Wiegman said. 'This tournament every single game has challenged us. 'We took those on board and how the team recovered from some setbacks, again today we went behind, but how we come back and how we kept working together and so hard and also then win. That's the most important thing." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
