CM Stalin slams Palaniswami for opposing HR&CE-run colleges, cites temple role in education

Meanwhile, reacting to Palaniswami's remarks of HR and CE department running colleges, the minister for the department PK Sekarbabu said the recommendation for running colleges by the HR and CE department was made by a commission headed by CP Ramaswamy, the then advocate general for Madras Presidency.
Even during the Chozha regime, educational institutions were run by temples. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act allows running schools, colleges and universities.
The Thirumala Thirupathi Devasthanam has been running seven colleges and four schools. In Kerala, three educational institutions have been functioning from the funds of the Sri Guruvayurappan temple.
'Palaniswami has made this remark just to satisfy the Sangh Parivar with whom he forged an alliance,' Sekarbabu said.

Toy trading firm caught in ₹6.25 crore GST fraud using fake address and bogus e-waybills
A firm claiming to trade in toys and video games came under the radar for operating a fake GST input tax credit (ITC) racket worth ₹6.25 crore, according to a statement issued by the Telangana Commercial Taxes Department. The firm, M/s Bala Corporation, was found to have fraudulently obtained its GST registration by submitting fabricated electricity bills for a non-existent address in the Somajiguda-1 circle of Khairatabad, under the Punjagutta division. Investigation revealed that though the firm was registered for trading toys and video games, it generated 1,268 e-waybills between March and April 2025 for entirely unrelated commodities including cement, copper pipes, and plywood. Officials said no actual goods were received or supplied. The proprietor, Nasari Vinod Kumar, is accused of violating key provisions under Sections 16(2) and 122 of the CGST/TGST Act, 2017. The firm allegedly claimed ₹6.25 crore in fake Integrated GST (IGST) input credit and further passed on ₹6.25 crore in fake Central and State GST credits to 32 other taxpayers across various jurisdictions. Following a site inspection conducted by ACTO Nagi Reddy, the GST registration of the firm was cancelled with retrospective effect from 25 February 2025. Letters have also been issued to the jurisdictional officers concerned for initiating recovery proceedings against the 32 recipient entities that benefited from the bogus ITC. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered at the Hyderabad Central Crime Station (CCS) and an investigation is now in progress.

Kumbakonam residents urge Centre to sanction new rail line between Needamangalam and Vriddhachalam
Train travellers and residents of Kumbakonam have urged the Union government to sanction a new railway line between Needamangalam and Vriddhachalam via Kumbakonam and Jayamkondam. The new rail line, if built, would give a fillip to economic growth in the hitherto unserved areas and spiritual tourism in the State, they said. Representations in this regard have been sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw by the Kumbakonam All Traders Association and Thanjavur District Railway Users Association. 'The benefits of a new railway line of less than 100 km between Needamangalam and Vriddhachalam would bring huge economic benefits,' says V. Sathyanarayanan, Secretary, Kumbakonam All Traders Association. The line could provide connectivity to Gangaikonda Cholapuram, where the famous Brihadisvara Temple built by King Rajendra Chola I is situated. With the Prime Minister scheduled to visit Gangaikonda Cholapuram later this month, it would be apt for the Railway Ministry to announce new rail line now, Mr. Sathyanarayanan said. Kumbakonam is an important spiritual, commercial, and historic city in Tamil Nadu. It is located in the single line section between Thanjavur and Villupuram on the 147-year-old Main Line section of Southern Railway. The Mahamaham festival, popularly known as the Kumbh of the South, is celebrated here once every 12 years. The city attracts continuous flow of pilgrims from different parts of the country through the year as it is also the hub for visiting the Navagraha temples. Yet Kumbakonam is neglected in terms of traffic and development as it has not been upgraded as a junction, he regretted. The demand for this new line had been in existence for over 50 years ago and a question in this regard had been raised even in Parliament in 1955, said A. Giri, secretary, Thanjavur District Railway Users Association. Considering the repeated demand, a preliminary survey was conducted for a new line between Kumbakonam and Vriddachalam in June 2016. The project is awaiting approval ever since, he said. The new line between Needamangalam and Vriddhachallam via Kumbakonam will provide an alternative shorter route to Salem, Bengaluru, Tirupati and other destinations from Rameswaram and southern Tamil Nadu via Pattukottai and Mannargudi. It would ensure speedy movement of freight traffic from Karaikal Port and boost spiritual tourism as it would connect places such as Kumbakonam and Gangaikonda Cholapuram. By providing train connectivity to under developed places such as Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Jayamkondam, and Andimadam, it would boost economic growth in the region, Mr. Giri added.

‘Direct attack on credibility': Mumbai court on BJP leader Narayan Rane's statements about Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Sanjay Raut
In a detailed order, a Special Court in Mumbai has rejected BJP leader Narayan Rane's revision appeal challenging the summons to him in a defamation case filed by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, and said the statements made cannot be part of a political discourse or dissenting views. The court passed the order on Wednesday, and the detailed order was made available on Thursday. Raut had filed a defamation suit against Rane after the latter allegedly claimed at the Konkan Festival in Mumbai's Bhandup in 2023 that Raut's name was not on the voters' list in 2004, when the Sena leader was elected as a Member of Rajya Sabha. Special Judge S R Navander said, '…the statement that the complainant (Raut) had committed fraud and would have to go to jail is vague, unsubstantiated, and cannot be said to have been made in good faith or with due care and attention. The statements were made without supporting material, thereby indicating malice and an intent to tarnish the complainant's reputation.' Rane had also claimed that it was at his behest that Raut got nominated, and he had extended help, including spending money, for the Sena leader to get elected. In April 2025, a magistrate court said that there was a prima facie case of defamation and issued a summons to Rane. Rane had sought that the order be set aside, stating that the comments resulted from political discourse and differing views, as they are long-standing political rivals. He also said that no proof was given on how it had caused any damage to Raut's reputation. Appearing for Raut, lawyer Sarthak Shetty had submitted that the statements made about the Sena (UBT) leader's name not being included in the voters' list were false, and produced the list from 2004. While Rane had cited orders of the Supreme Court which had quashed multiple complaints made over opinion-based statements, the special court said Rane's remarks directly attacked Raut's 'honesty and credibility' in public life.
