In Pixar's Toy Story 5, the Big New Villain Is a Tablet
During the studio's Friday showcase at Annecy's International Animation Film Festival in France, chief creative officer Pete Docter revealed that Toy Story 5's villain is Lily Pad, a "sneaky" and "prickly" tablet that convinces 8-year-old Bonnie Anderson that friends and games on a device beat dusty ol' toys in the closet.
The first concept art shows the frog-faced tablet looming over Buzz, Jessie and Bullseye like a touchscreen tyrant of the toy box. As you can probably foresee, this is a battle between analog toys and always-on tech. (You can stream Toy Story movies one through four on Disney Plus.)
The Lily Pad reveal topped a jam-packed Walt Disney Animation and Pixar showcase, where the company rolled out updated release dates, never-before-seen footage and a couple of all-new original films.
Toy Story 5: tech is the enemy
The premise of Toy Story 5 is that Anderson gets a Lily Pad for school chat and online games. But the tablet decides that Anderson's toys, including Woody, Buzz and Jessie, are holding her back. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack are all returning, while Ernie Hudson steps in as Combat Carl, honoring the late Carl Weathers.
Docter shared the opening scene of Toy Story 5, which shows a crate full of stranded Buzz Lightyears trying to escape a desert island. Toy Story 5 is set for release on June 19, 2026, more than 30 years after the first movie came out. It's set a couple of years after the events of Toy Story 4, but no word yet on how Woody, who departed with Bo Peep at the end of that movie, will return to Bonnie's house -- or whether Bo Peep will be in the fifth movie.

Pixar's two new original films: Hoppers and Gatto
Daniel Chong's Hoppers, scheduled for March 6, 2026, turns an eco-heist into a critter-powered caper: 14-year-old Mabel uploads her mind into a robotic beaver to save her local pond from a highway project.
Gatto, slated for summer 2027, centers on Nero, a black cat in Venice who's burned through most of his nine lives doing jobs for a feline mob boss. Now, questioning whether he's wasted those lives, Nero stumbles into an unexpected friendship that could finally give him purpose. The film will be shot in a "living storybook" style, which is new to Pixar.
New footage from Zootopia 2 and Elio
Jared Bush, Walt Disney Animation Studios' chief creative officer and director-writer of Zootopia 2, showed some new footage and images from the anticipated sequel, which should come out in November. The audience also got to watch a 27-minute sizzle reel from Elio, the cosmic coming-of-age adventure, which opens June 20.

Disney Reveals ‘Elio' 4K Blu-Ray Details—Including Hours Of Bonus Features
Disney has announced that Pixar's latest film, Elio, is set to arrive on 4K Blu-ray on September 9, featuring a premium video and audio presentation, a promising-sounding set of bonus features, and lovely steelbook packaging. Elio, which follows the adventures of a boy whose contact with aliens sees him whisked away on an intergalactic adventure that both expands his horizons and teaches him about the importance of connections with loved ones back on Earth, recently came to the end of what was by Pixar's usual standards a rather disappointing cinema run. So Disney will be hoping there's plenty of pent-up demand for the film on home video from families and Pixar fans who didn't make the trip to see the film at the cinema. The studio certainly seems to have put some effort in to making Elio on 4K Blu-ray something children and physical media collectors alike will want to own. For starters, in the U.S. Elio will exclusively be available in a beautifully designed limited edition Steelbook package that will include the film on HD Blu-ray as well as the 4K disc. The 4K Blu-ray will feature the film mastered in the Dolby Vision format, with extra scene by scene picture information is provided to help compatible TVs deliver punchier, more accurate visuals. Its soundtrack will be available in a Dolby Atmos mix, too, that builds a hemisphere of sound around and above the viewer for the ultimate in movie immersion. Note that the Dolby Vision video will default to the more basic HDR10 format (minus the scene by scene information) if the Elio 4K Blu-ray is played on a TV or 4K Blu-ray player that doesn't support Dolby Vision. Disney's initial press information on the Elio 4K Blu-ray suggests that the film is going to appear on a high-capacity 100GB disc, despite its modest 98-minute run time. This would be very surprising given Disney's usual preference for 66GB discs, making me wonder if Disney has repeated the mistake it made when it claimed that Master & Commander: The Far Side Of The World was going to be mastered to 100GB disc. While I await an answer to my request for confirmation on this point, though, I'll take Disney's initial information at its word and look forward to seeing how uncompressed Elio might look with so much disc space to play with. Those hours of extra features provided with the Elio 4K Blu-ray package, finally, include everything from art classes and a gag reel to five deleted scenes and a collection of 'Easter Eggs' and fun facts, with the full collection looking like this: * Inside the Communiverse: The World and Characters of Elio – In-depth behind the scenes look with multiple cast and crew at the design and development of Elio's main characters and environments. * Out of This World: An Astro Q&A – Voice actors Yonas Kibreab (Elio) and Remy Edgerly (Glordon) meet with a real-life astronaut to discuss space travel, possible alien life on other planets, and why it's important to study space. * Astronomic Art Class: Ooooo and Glordon – Join Nicolle Castro, the lead story artist, as she shares her role on the film and guides viewers through drawing the film's Ooooo and Glordon characters. * Extraterrestrial Easter Eggs and Fun Facts – Uncover the references and characters from some of your favorite Pixar films hidden throughout Elio, along with other fun facts. * Galactic Gag Reel – Visit the recording booth with Elio's voice actors. * Deleted Scenes – Five scenes that didn't make it into the final movie. While I can't describe exactly what these deleted scenes are about, or why they were deleted, Disney's press information does at least give each one a title. Will the Oscars Leave ABC? Why the Hulu-Disney+ Merger Could Prevent a Split and Benefit Both Sides
Disney's planned 2026 integration of Hulu into Disney+ could represent more than streaming consolidation — it creates unprecedented opportunities for both Disney and the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to reshape awards broadcasting for the streaming era. As the Academy's current ABC deal approaches its 2028 expiration, Disney's unified platform offers global reach while the Academy Awards provides Disney with a big launch platform and the prestige of hosting one of the year's biggest events in entertainment. The last deal between the sides was set in 2016 — well before the launch of Disney+ and the rest of the streaming explosion. 'If the Oscars stay at ABC, it represents the best of both worlds,' a veteran awards strategist tells Variety. 'Disney aligns with cinema's most prestigious institution, while the Academy gains wider streaming reach.' The March 2025 dual-platform experiment — broadcast on ABC, streamed on Hulu — delivered promising results. The Oscars attracted 19.7 million viewers, a rare 1% increase that bucked years of audience decline. The experiment gave Disney valuable live-streaming data while the Academy reached expanded its reach beyond linear to streaming viewers who want more flexibility in options for watching even a live awards show event. The Academy's broader initiatives — education, philanthropy and the Academy Museum — align with Disney's content ecosystem spanning ABC Signature, 20th Television, FX and streaming services. This also opens doors to year-round Academy programming such as documentaries, behind-the-scenes features and Disney+ exclusive educational content. A long-term and wide-ranging agreement could create yield experimentation opportunities such as interactive Oscar experiences, international filmmaker showcases and member-exclusive content. However, the $100 million question remains: How are talks progressing between the two parties? Both sides have remained tight-lipped. Sources with direct knowledge tell Variety negotiations are 'going well and moving along.' Early speculation indicated that Disney chief Bob Iger wanted to wait on the deal until the Mouse House has set his successor as CEO, which is expected to come early next year. But Academy leaders don't want to wait that long. Both ABC and the Academy declined to comment. Industry insiders predict clarity on ABC and the Oscars' future by year's end. Newly appointed AMPAS President Lynette Howell Taylor, an Oscar-nominated producer for Bradley Cooper's directorial debut 'A Star is Born,' brings deep industry ties from producing the 92nd Academy Awards — the 'Parasite' year. Although she can only serve a one-year term due to board term limits, she would be allowed to return after a two-year hiatus. She would be a valuable asset to bring this over the finish line. Disney's technological infrastructure offers capabilities beyond traditional broadcasters — second-screen experiences, real-time engagement and global distribution. For the Academy, the priority remains reaching younger, more diverse audiences critical for long-term relevance. But sources caution that other media platforms have expressed strong interest to AMPAS in having discussions about Oscars. Despite its long relationship with AMPAS, Disney will have to make them a compelling offer or risk being out-bid by a rival. As negotiations advance, the potential for a continued partnership for the Oscars and Disney — or if a new player will jump into the mix — will be one of the most pressing questions for filmdom insiders in the coming months.
