PM: Don't block UMS students' studies

KUALA LUMPUR (June 24): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has instructed the Higher Education Ministry (MoHE) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) not to hinder the academic progress of students involved in a recent anti-corruption rally, which included the burning of a caricature resembling him.
Senior Press Secretary to the Prime Minister, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said during the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) daily briefing Tuesday that the students' actions at the Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 rally on Saturday (June 21) should be viewed in the context of youth voices courageously expressing their views on issues of integrity and corruption.
He said the act of burning the caricature during the assembly was a symbol of unwavering reform, and as a former student activist and reformist himself, the Prime Minister consistently defends freedom of expression as enshrined in the Constitution.
'This incident reminds us of the people's deep hope for corruption to be eradicated from its roots. The Prime Minister himself emerged from the student movement and once led reformist demonstrations in the streets, so he truly understands that voice.
'He has witnessed that criticism, no matter how harsh, is an essential part of celebrating democracy,' Tunku Nashrul said.
The Suara Mahasiswa UMS group had organised the rally, which involved marching through Kota Kinabalu city carrying placards highlighting various issues in Sabah, such as corruption and the state's water supply.
During the rally, a caricature of Anwar was set on fire.
Tunku Nashrul said the Prime Minister emphasised that the spirit of change begins with the courage of young people to speak the truth, grounded in facts and with sincere intent.
'On the government's part, the reform commitment remains strong (and) already being translated into real, actionable steps. This commitment will not stop here and will continue to be refined and implemented in a structured manner,' he said.
Tunku Nashrul said for the sake of future generations, the MADANI government will stay the course on the reform agenda, ensuring every anti-corruption effort is channeled towards the well-being and prosperity of all Malaysians. – Bernama

Student group launches campaign calling for release of detained activists
KOTA KINABALU: Student group Suara Mahasiswa UMS has launched the #SABAH3 campaign, calling for the immediate release of three activists recently detained under the Sedition Act 1948. The campaign follows the arrest of their leader Muhamad Fadhil Muhamad Kasim, member Aliff Danial Badrul Akmal Hisham, and local activist Sabir Syarifuddin. In a statement posted on Instagram on Tuesday (June 24), Suara Mahasiswa UMS claimed that the three were wrongly detained for their involvement in the recent Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 rally. They stated that the two UMS undergraduates were arrested at the Kota Kinabalu District Police headquarters when they went to lodge a report after acid was allegedly splashed on Fadhil's car. 'We strongly reject this abuse of power and demand that the authorities release all three activists immediately. "This is why we are launching the #SABAH3 campaign, to mobilise public support,' they said in a post. They also criticised Kota Kinabalu district police chief Asst Comm Kasim Muda for initially denying the arrests, calling it misleading to the media and public. The Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 protest, held over June 21–22, saw students gather peacefully to protest against corruption and unresolved water problems on campus, but escalated into controversy when some demonstrators burnt caricatures of the Prime Minister on the final day. Meanwhile, Parti Warisan legal adviser Chin Tek Ming, who was also summoned by police in connection with the rally, voiced support for the students and their cause. In a statement on Tuesday (June 24), he confirmed giving a statement to the authorities earlier but clarified that he was not present during the caricature-burning incident. While he did not condone the burning of placards, he stressed that the students felt they had no avenue left to pursue. Earlier, Anwar advised that UMS students involved in the recent Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally should not face expulsion. According to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Anwar acknowledged the students may have made a mistake but stressed that their education and future should take priority. This follows an earlier statement by UMS Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor that 13 students could face disciplinary action under the Universities and University Colleges Act 2012, which may include suspension or expulsion.

UMNO Youth boss told not to defend PMX in Sabah's caricature torching incident as 'what goes around, comes around'
IT is worrisome that both courtesy and respect accorded to Prime Minister Datuk Sei Anwar are thinning by the day in tandem with the widening trust deficit gap in his Madani administration. After having poured their heart out on the Facebook page of Your Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia over the weekend with an appeal 'to save Malaysia', a similar trend is detected on the Facebook page of UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh. In unison, the fanbase of the firebrand Merlimau state assemblyman swamped his post to counter him after he defended PMX by ticking off the Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 rally protestors who torched the latter's caricature bearing the slogan 'Madani: Protector of Sabah's Corrupt'. 'You should be brave in your struggle but not stupid and rude!! (referring to the torching of PMX's caricature),' the Russia-trained medical doctor had penned on his Facebook page which has garnered 5.8K likes, 1.8K comments and 251 shares at the time of writing. 'Being brave doesn't mean we have to lose our manners as humans. To my brother undergraduate who feels brave because he managed to burn PMX's caricature, you are actually a coward and stupid person.' This is when a commenter advised the Melaka Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security EXCO not to waste his time arranging to meet up with the young minds who have yet to be tested with positions and power. 'Instead, you should confront PMX who're always lying to the rakyat. Numerous promises have been made but the fact is not a single proof that PMX has fulfilled any of the promises made before. ZERO!' Another commenter said he was not surprised as 'what's happening these days is passed down from the time when PH (Pakatan Harapan) was in the opposition'. 'Just face it for you did likewise to BN (Barisan Nasional), right? 😅😆' he teased while a fellow commenter displayed an old image purportedly of BERSIH 4 protestors in 2015 sleeping on the streets of Kuala Lumpur with a question 'Is this civilised?' Pointing to the English idiom 'you reap what you sow', one commenter stated that 'this is the price that must be paid when you helm of the government yet unable to implement what you've promised when you're outside the government'. Another contended that the notion of kepimpinan melalui teladan (leadership by example) is true simply because 'what u give u get back 🤣 [sic]'. One presumably UMNO loyalist attested that this was why incarcerated former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his team 'had never issued any statement when they're provoked by the opposition even with actions that were so despicable and rude, including destroying of public property'. Kyrgyz President Accorded Official Welcome In Putrajaya
PUTRAJAYA, June 25 (Bernama) -- The President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Sadyr Zhaparov, who is on a two-day official visit to Malaysia, attended an official welcoming ceremony at the Perdana Putra Complex here today. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim received Zhaparov upon his arrival at 9 am, with the national anthems of both countries played as a mark of respect. Zhaparov then inspected a guard of honour mounted by three officers and 103 personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment, led by Major Nur Ahmad Zaim Zahari. Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, other Cabinet members, foreign diplomats and senior government officials. Zhaparov then signed the guest book before proceeding to a bilateral meeting with Anwar. According to the Foreign Ministry, the leaders are expected to explore opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation in various fields, including trade and investment, renewable and green energy, the halal industry, agricommodity, tourism, education, and capacity-building through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP). Both leaders will also witness the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) on tourism, digital transformation and cybersecurity, higher education, health, trade promotion, economic cooperation, scientific and research collaboration, as well as an Exchange of Notes on youth development and training for diplomats. A Letter of Intent on legal cooperation will also be signed. The visit marks Zhaparov's maiden official trip to Malaysia since assuming office in January 2021, and reciprocates Anwar's official visit to the Kyrgyz Republic in May last year. In 2024, the Kyrgyz Republic was Malaysia's fourth-largest trading partner among Central Asian countries, with total bilateral trade valued at RM40 million (USD8.74 million).
