Take service road between Surathkal & Nanthoor: NHAI
Mangaluru: NHAI has directed two and three-wheeler users to use the service road between Surathkal and Nanthoor. The project director-cum-highway administrator, NHAI, project implementation unit, Mangaluru, stated on Saturday that coastal Karnataka is witnessing incessant rain since last month. Torrential monsoon and ongoing downpour have damaged some sections of national highways, making them unsafe for high-speed traffic. Considering the safety of NH users, the highway administration, in exercise of powers under Section 31 of the Control of National Highway, has asked two- and three-wheeler riders to use available service roads in the stretch from Surathkal to Nantoor Junction on NH-66 in Dakshina Kannada during the monsoon (till Sept). The speed limit between Surathkal and Nantoor Junction on NH-66 is 50km per hour. All national highway users are advised to drive within speed limits, stated a release. NHAI project director Abdulla Javed Azmi told TOI: "Accidents took place after being hit by heavy vehicles. We hope the segregation of traffic will stop such incidents, especially in Baikampady to KIOCL area..." he said. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . NHAI plans green barriers to curb pedestrian deaths on NH
In response to the rising number of accidents and pedestrian fatalities along the National Highway, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to implement a green barrier project on a pilot basis from Aug. The initiative, which will begin in Uchila, Udupi, aims to enhance road safety while also increasing greenery along the highway. NHAI project director Abdulla Javed Azmi told TOI that the NHAI is moving toward more environmentally friendly practices. "Instead of conventional steel guard rails, we plan to plant dense hedge rows that will act as natural barriers. These will not only prevent pedestrians from crossing dangerously but will also beautify the stretch," he said. Typically, plants are spaced three metres apart, but for this project, the gap will be reduced to ensure a thick green cover. The dual-row planting will include hedge plants for safety and flowering plants for aesthetics, he said. In another green initiative, all three toll plazas at Talapady, Hejamady, and Sasthan are now operating on solar energy connected to the grid. Launched about eight months ago, this has significantly reduced operational costs and can also support electric vehicle (EV) charging. As part of the 'Rajmarg Saathi' initiative, electric toll patrol vehicles were launched recently near the Hejamady toll plaza to monitor and maintain NH-66 between Kundapur and Talapady. The three vehicles for each toll plaza were converted into EVs recently. These patrol units make four to six rounds daily, ensuring efficient highway management. The concessionaires have been supportive of innovative projects that help in cost reduction. On World Environment Day, the NHAI also took part in a nationwide plantation drive under the campaign 'Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam'. The NHAI is also working on several green initiatives that are awaiting approval from the authorities. NHAI is providing free left turns at the Nanthoor Junction in Mangaluru.

NHAI observes World Environment Day under ‘Ek Ped Ma Ke Nam' theme
The National Highways Authority of India, Mangaluru Project Implementing Uni (PIU), observed World Environment Day by planting tree saplings on the flanks of Kochi-Panvel National Highway 66, Mangaluru-Bengaluru NH 75 and Mangaluru-Solapur NH 169 in its limits on June 5, Thursday. Under the theme, 'Ek Ped Ma Ke Nam,' the highway authority observed the day across the country as a symbolic gesture of planting a tree sapling in the name of one's mother. This gesture, said project director Abdulla Javed Azmi, serves a dual purpose, honouring the role of mothers in nurturing life and contributing to the conservation of environment. As a part of activity, tree sapling plantation programmes were organised in various parts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, attended among others by Azmi, Technical Manager K. Chandrashekhar, Site Engineer Mohammed Nasir Hussain. Saplings were planted along the Surathkal-Kundapura section of NH 66, B.C. Road-Adda Hole section of NH 75 and Bikarnakatte-Sanur section of NH 169. Schoolchildren participated in the programmes along with their teachers with much enthusiasm. End plastic pollution Southern Railway's Palakkad Division that began observing the World Environment Day with a fortnight-long campaign from May 22 to June 5 has laid emphasis on ending plastic pollution. On Thursday, Divisional Railway Manager Arun Kumar Chaturvedi planted a tree sapling to mark the occasion at the Divisional headquarters in Palakkad. End Plastic Pollution initiative spans across the Division, with activities being coordinated at 31 key stations, each managed by a nominated nodal officer to ensure effective implementation. The drive included awareness campaigns, eco-friendly activities etc. Plastic waste management was the focus of the drive with all units ensuring proper collection, segregation and disposal of plastic waste. In addition, workshops for railway employees were organised on reducing plastic use, promoting recycling practices and adopting better waste management protocols. To reach a wider audience, public announcement systems were used to urge passengers to avoid single-use plastics and carry their own water bottles. Massive cleanliness drives too were conducted across the Division. Educational initiatives included drawing, essay, and quiz competitions for school students to foster sustainable habits from a young age. About 600 saplings would be planted across the division, said Mr. Chaturvedi. He was accompanied by senior officials, including Additional DRMs S. Jayakrishnan and K. Anil Kumar.
