NHAI plans green barriers to curb pedestrian deaths on NH
The initiative, which will begin in Uchila, Udupi, aims to enhance road safety while also increasing greenery along the highway. NHAI project director Abdulla Javed Azmi told TOI that the NHAI is moving toward more environmentally friendly practices. "Instead of conventional steel guard rails, we plan to plant dense hedge rows that will act as natural barriers. These will not only prevent pedestrians from crossing dangerously but will also beautify the stretch," he said.
Typically, plants are spaced three metres apart, but for this project, the gap will be reduced to ensure a thick green cover. The dual-row planting will include hedge plants for safety and flowering plants for aesthetics, he said.
In another green initiative, all three toll plazas at Talapady, Hejamady, and Sasthan are now operating on solar energy connected to the grid. Launched about eight months ago, this has significantly reduced operational costs and can also support electric vehicle (EV) charging.
As part of the 'Rajmarg Saathi' initiative, electric toll patrol vehicles were launched recently near the Hejamady toll plaza to monitor and maintain NH-66 between Kundapur and Talapady. The three vehicles for each toll plaza were converted into EVs recently. These patrol units make four to six rounds daily, ensuring efficient highway management. The concessionaires have been supportive of innovative projects that help in cost reduction.
On World Environment Day, the NHAI also took part in a nationwide plantation drive under the campaign 'Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam'. The NHAI is also working on several green initiatives that are awaiting approval from the authorities. NHAI is providing free left turns at the Nanthoor Junction in Mangaluru.

Telangana car owners may not benefit from Centre's Annual Toll Pass scheme
File photo NEW DELHI: Private car owners in Telangana won't be able to avail the Annual Toll Pass scheme for National Highways (NHs) and expressways to be launched by the Centre on Aug 15, as vehicles registered in the state have not yet been migrated to the Vahan database (central registry of vehicles). The annual pass, to be issued from next week, requires real-time validation of vehicle class through the Vahan portal. Union transport secretary V Umashankar, in a letter addressed to Telangana chief secretary last week, sought the 'personal intervention' of the top state official to expedite the migration of the state's vehicle data to Vahan portal and ensure 'equitable access to the nationwide facility for road users'. In his letter, Umashankar highlighted how the Centre had reached out to the state govt in May this year for merger of state registers for driving licence (DL) and registration certificate (RC) of vehicles with the national registers —Sarathi and Vahan -- but the same has not happened yet. Except Telangana, all other states have come on board, officials said. Crater-ridden NH 66 on Surathkal-Nanthoor stretch drives motorists into tizzy
The inability of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to undertake total renewal and repair of the B.C. Road-NITK Surathkal Port Connectivity Road before the onset of Monsoon has left the highway, particularly NH 66 between Nanthoor and Surathikal in a perilous condition threatening the safety of motorists. While the Authority could undertake total road renewal of about 2 km stretch between NITK and Surathkal flyover, early rains thwarted its plans of renewing the remaining stretch between Surahtkal and Baikampady and repairing the Baikampady-Nanthoor stretch, leaving the highway in a mess. Series of potholes and craters dot the right hand-side of the carriageways, that is, next to the medians, caused by constant waterlogging and wear and tear on account of regular movement of heavy goods vehicles. The entire stretch lacks proper rainwater drainage system on the carriageways as a result of which water stagnates next to the medians. The top layer of both the carriageways on Baikampady-Kulur stretch that passes through New Mangalore Port, has completely worn out presenting an awful picture. While cars and other bigger vehicles somehow negotiate the stretch with difficulty, two-wheeler riders risk their life to pass through the stretch. Two-wheeler rider, Surathkal Janatha Colony resident Mahammed Ashraf who fell on the road in his attempt to negotiate a crater at Panambur, was crushed under the wheels of a tanker truck on June 9. Traffic snarls As the vehicles move slowly to negotiate the battered stretches of the highway, traffic snarls and traffic jams have become an order of the day, rued Manjunath Prasad, who regularly rides between Surathkal and Mangaluru. While motorists would drive or ride almost blindfolded when it rains, they wade through clouds of dust when it shines, he regretted. 'No toll collection at closed plazas on Madukkarai Bypass': NHAI officials
COIMBATORE: National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials in Coimbatore have strongly refuted social media rumours claiming toll charges are being collected at closed toll plazas along the Neelambur-Madukkarai Bypass. Clarifying the matter, the officials assured that toll collection is currently taking place only at the Madukkarai toll plaza, as announced earlier. The 27 km Neelambur-Madukkarai Bypass, which was previously maintained by L&T, recently came under NHAI's jurisdiction. Following the takeover, the NHAI implemented revised toll charges effective from August 1 and permanently shut down operations at five of the six toll plazas on the route. Only the Madukkarai plaza remains operational. Responding to complaints from a few commuters who alleged toll was being collected at the closed booths, NHAI officials clarified that all systems, including sensors and computers-have been removed from the non-operational toll plazas. "There is no question of collecting toll at booths that are shut down. The rumours are baseless," an official said. The officials also dispelled the notion that vehicles registered in Coimbatore were exempt from payment. Some commuters misunderstood the toll policy. No exemption has been granted. A subsidised monthly pass is available for Rs 350. Additionally, plans are underway to introduce a yearly pass for Rs 3,000 to further ease the burden on regular commuters, NHAI officials stated. "We urge residents to avoid misinformation and avail the subsidised pass for smoother travel. Spreading false claims only creates confusion," the official added. The NHAI has assured the public that toll collection is being conducted transparently and in accordance with the new guidelines. Commuters are encouraged to direct any queries to NHAI's local office for accurate information.
