NHAI observes World Environment Day under ‘Ek Ped Ma Ke Nam' theme
The National Highways Authority of India, Mangaluru Project Implementing Uni (PIU), observed World Environment Day by planting tree saplings on the flanks of Kochi-Panvel National Highway 66, Mangaluru-Bengaluru NH 75 and Mangaluru-Solapur NH 169 in its limits on June 5, Thursday.
Under the theme, 'Ek Ped Ma Ke Nam,' the highway authority observed the day across the country as a symbolic gesture of planting a tree sapling in the name of one's mother. This gesture, said project director Abdulla Javed Azmi, serves a dual purpose, honouring the role of mothers in nurturing life and contributing to the conservation of environment.
As a part of activity, tree sapling plantation programmes were organised in various parts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, attended among others by Azmi, Technical Manager K. Chandrashekhar, Site Engineer Mohammed Nasir Hussain. Saplings were planted along the Surathkal-Kundapura section of NH 66, B.C. Road-Adda Hole section of NH 75 and Bikarnakatte-Sanur section of NH 169. Schoolchildren participated in the programmes along with their teachers with much enthusiasm.
End plastic pollution
Southern Railway's Palakkad Division that began observing the World Environment Day with a fortnight-long campaign from May 22 to June 5 has laid emphasis on ending plastic pollution. On Thursday, Divisional Railway Manager Arun Kumar Chaturvedi planted a tree sapling to mark the occasion at the Divisional headquarters in Palakkad.
End Plastic Pollution initiative spans across the Division, with activities being coordinated at 31 key stations, each managed by a nominated nodal officer to ensure effective implementation. The drive included awareness campaigns, eco-friendly activities etc.
Plastic waste management was the focus of the drive with all units ensuring proper collection, segregation and disposal of plastic waste. In addition, workshops for railway employees were organised on reducing plastic use, promoting recycling practices and adopting better waste management protocols. To reach a wider audience, public announcement systems were used to urge passengers to avoid single-use plastics and carry their own water bottles. Massive cleanliness drives too were conducted across the Division. Educational initiatives included drawing, essay, and quiz competitions for school students to foster sustainable habits from a young age.
About 600 saplings would be planted across the division, said Mr. Chaturvedi. He was accompanied by senior officials, including Additional DRMs S. Jayakrishnan and K. Anil Kumar.

HPCL Visakh Refinery exhorts people to do their part to save planet
Visakhapatnam: As part of World Environment Day celebrations at HPCL – Visakh Re-finery, a valedictory function was organised in the refinery. In his address, executive director (I/C) – Visakh Refinery R Ramakrish-nan stressed the importance of environmental protection and respon-sibility of individuals. While explaining this year's theme focusing on 'beat plastic pollution', he cited how each individual can contribute to reducing plastic pollution by using biodegradable materials in place of single-use plastic. The refinery created awareness on the ill-effects of plastic pollution and biodegradable alternatives to plastic pollution among contract workers. Cloth bags and saplings of different varieties were distribut-ed to people. G Bhagavan, GM-Technical, briefed about several activities carried out by the refinery. Refinery employees, their family members, chil-dren and winners of various competitions attended.

IIM Nagpur's bid to promote green campus initiative
Nagpur: In a strong demonstration of its commitment to sustainability, the Indian Institute of Management Nagpur (IIM-N) celebrated World Environment Day by highlighting a series of impactful eco-friendly initiatives that position the institute as a leader in environmental stewardship among India's educational institutions. Our green campus efforts show how educational institutes can set an example by taking real action," said Dr Bhimaraya Metri, director of IIM Nagpur. IIM Nagpur's sustainability vision is anchored in six key projects that work in harmony to reduce the campus's environmental impact and promote green living. One of the most significant efforts is the integration of solar energy. A 2MW power project is underway which will make IIMN completely self-sustained for its energy needs. "Our solar infrastructure serves a dual purpose: reducing our carbon footprint and providing students with a live demonstration of renewable energy in action," Dr Metri added. Water conservation is another cornerstone of the institute's strategy. Rainwater harvesting systems are installed across the campus, recharging groundwater and reducing reliance on municipal water supplies, particularly during dry periods. In tandem, campus buildings have been designed with passive cooling, natural lighting, and energy-efficient insulation to minimise energy use for lighting and climate control. Wastewater is fully treated and reused for landscaping and other non-potable purposes through a closed-loop system, ensuring zero discharge into the environment. IIM Nagpur is collaborating with HP Enterprise which will help to map and monitor our sustainability efforts. To commemorate World Environment Day, the IIM Nagpur community — faculty and staff — came together for a tree-planting drive in the campus, reinforcing their shared responsibility for the environment.
