QSCCB observes Int'l Youth Day with session on visual impairment
QNA Doha The Qatar Social and Cultural Center for Blind (QSCCB) has organised an interactive awareness session to empower youth and raise their awareness about the issues faced by persons with disabilities. This initiative targets members of QSCCB and the Kaaban Youth Center, and it is part of the celebration of the International Youth Day, observed annually on August 12. The session was presented by QSCCB member Ahmed Al Kubaisi, who provided an overview of visual impairment, its types and major causes, while also correcting common misconceptions about the condition. Al Kubaisi emphasised that losing vision does not always mean complete blindness, and that visual impairment does not prevent a person from learning or working. He also showcased key assistive technologies that support people with visual disabilities, such as screen readers, smartphone apps, Braille tools, smart glasses, and modern tech devices, which participants had the opportunity to try. The session also covered appropriate ways to interact with people with visual impairments, including introducing oneself clearly, using specific descriptions, avoiding unnecessary loud speech, informing the person of obstacles or surroundings, allowing them to hold the guide's arm, and notifying them when leaving, while highlighting behaviours to avoid. The event reaffirmed the importance of promoting social awareness and the role of youth in supporting the inclusion of visually impaired individuals in all areas of life.

Civil Defence Launches Nationwide Summer Safety Campaigns to Protect Lives and Property
sk As part of its ongoing commitment to public safety, the General Directorate of Civil Defence has launched a series of nationwide awareness campaigns and targeted programmes aimed at promoting a culture of safety during the high-risk summer months. Brigadier Ali Mohammed Al Kubaisi, Director-General of Civil Defence, announced that the initiative forms a core element of the Directorate's strategic plan to prevent and mitigate incidents linked to extreme heat and the improper use of energy sources. He confirmed that over 65 locations across all governorates of the Kingdom of Bahrain will be covered as part of this year's campaign. Highlighting the importance of public cooperation, Brig. Al Kubaisi stressed the need to follow safety regulations to protect both lives and property. He noted that, in the past three years, the Directorate has conducted 265 awareness campaigns targeting key risk-prone areas. These include home safety, worker accommodations, fuel stations, factories, warehouses, workshops, and even specific seasonal focuses such as pilgrim safety and safety practices during the Ashura season. Additional initiatives have been rolled out to address safety in places of worship, commercial warehouses, parking areas, and swimming pools. The Directorate has also implemented self-protection programmes for shop workers and educational campaigns in partnership with local institutions. With summer temperatures on the rise, Brig. Al Kubaisi warned of the increased risk of fires caused by the overuse or poor maintenance of electrical appliances. He urged the public to conduct regular maintenance checks, inspect wiring and plugs, replace damaged components, and ensure that appliances meet national safety standards. Proper ventilation, particularly for air conditioners, and routine cleaning of filters and fans were also emphasised to reduce the risk of overheating. The Director-General reaffirmed the Directorate's dedication to raising public awareness through community partnerships involving both government and private sector entities. The app offers an integrated suite of guidance, health, and communication services that accompany the pilgrim throughout the various phases of the pilgrimage journey. Head of the Information Systems Unit at the Qatari Hajj Mission, Ghanem Rashid Al Kubaisi, highlighted that the application serves as a 'smart digital companion' for pilgrims from Qatar. He noted that it constitutes the mission's unwavering efforts to enhance services, indicating that the application is available on both the Apple App Store and Android platforms, ensuring broad accessibility for all pilgrims from the State of Qatar. The application also benefits Arabic-speaking pilgrims of various nationalities by providing them with credible and reliable informational content, he outlined. As part of the on-ground preparations, the mission's Information Systems Unit has outfitted the mission's key facilities in Saudi Arabia with a state-of-the-art internal network. This infrastructure has been seamlessly integrated across all administrative, technical, and service units within the facilities, in pursuit of accelerating the operational workflows and fostering a diligent, advanced work atmosphere that ensures optimal service delivery to the pilgrims. In addition, the mission intended to provide modern devices that track the traffic of the campaigns' buses while en route, with the aim of facilitating traffic flow between the holy sites. It also connected these devices with the Communication Unit to provide prompt services to pilgrims so as to easily accomplish the pilgrimage rituals and simultaneously ensure their safety and provision of support when needed. The application includes a comprehensive health guide developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Endowments. It offers pre- and post-ritual health tips, safety and first aid instructions, as well as key recommendations for the pre-pilgrimage phase. It also incorporates smart services that were specifically catered to pilgrims in order to facilitate their experience, mostly the circumambulation around the Kaaba 'Tawaf and Sa'i', along with an electronic rosary for reciting supplications. It features an interactive map of the Grand Mosque displaying gate locations, ablution areas, and security offices, offering audio-visual educational videos that explain the Hajj rituals in a clear and accessible format. Furthermore, the application provides essential information such as the Qibla direction, prayer times, and real-time weather updates. Pilgrims may also electronically generate and print an official Hajj completion certificate through the campaign management system linked to the Department of Hajj and Umrah Affairs.
