#SHOWBIZ: Zee Avi sacrifices career in the US for her parents

KUALA LUMPUR: After more than a decade in the United States, singer-songwriter Zee Avi, 39, has chosen to return to Malaysia, not because her music career is on the wane. In a recent interview with Berita Harian, the Sarawakian talent said that she wanted to spend more time with her parents, who were "getting old". "I chose to come home six years ago, after spending a decade in the US as a singer-songwriter," said Zee, who earlier lived in London for six years to further her studies at university level. "During my six years in London, I was actively writing songs and as soon as I graduated, I was offered to record songs in the US, where I stayed for 11 years." Miri-born Zee, or Izyan Alirahman added: "Every time I return to my homeland, I see my parents aging. As the eldest child, I need to fulfill my responsibilities." "Some may think that my career in the US is on the wane, it's up to them to say what they want, so long as I know why I made my decision to come home." Zee said that she was still a singer-songwriter with her group Zee Avi & The Good Things. "I hope that one of my songs can make it to Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL). "I warmly welcome any composers who are interested in writing songs with me," she said. Zee has been married to Japanese content analyst Kenji Matano since 2021. In the last few years, she has been suffering from hearing problems and needs to wear a hearing aid for 13 hours a day.

#SHOWBIZ: The RM500 question: Caliph Buskers lament pitiful performance fees

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite establishing themselves in mainstream music and even competing at Anugerah Juara Lagu, Caliph Buskers has expressed disappointment that some event organisers still offer performance fees as low as RM500. In a recent Instagram post, the award-winning group lamented that such offers barely cover their pre-performance expenses and are insufficient when divided among the members. "Yes! This is real, not a joke," the caption read, accompanied by examples of these meagre proposals. "Throughout our decade-long journey, we have never demanded exorbitant fees. Our requested payment covers transportation, labour, training, and other necessities, leaving only a modest sum for our members' livelihoods, not luxury." Azmi Saat, Nirwan, and Zaki of Caliph Buskers emphasised that they do not seek VIP treatment but hope their talent is fairly valued. "Perhaps some are unaware that our fees are often lower than those offered to newcomers. "We aren't asking for the moon and the stars, just fair and appropriate compensation that acknowledges our music and sustains us and our families."

#SHOWBIZ: Hael Husaini no longer single, wedding bells soon?

KUALA LUMPUR: Singer and composer Hael Husaini has revealed that he is no longer single and is open to the possibility of marriage if his current relationship progresses well. "Yes, my heart is taken, and I'm not available," Hael said. "I leave the matter of finding a soulmate to God. I have no reservations about sharing news of a wedding." "However, I'm uncomfortable discussing something that is still uncertain," he added when met at the recent Last Kopek Raya event. "If I find my soulmate soon, I would be happy to settle down." The Anugerah Juara Lagu winner also indicated his readiness to marry someone from within the entertainment industry. "If a soulmate appears, God willing, I'm ready," the 38-year-old artiste, whose real name is Hal Husaini Razmi, said. "I'm no longer 18, and I welcome the prospect of finding love." Hael also requested prayers for his future marital endeavors. "Please pray for the best when I decide to take the plunge into marriage," he said. "And please extend your prayers to other artiste friends who are also seeking to settle down." Hael previously dismissed rumours of an impending marriage to a popular celebrity, clarifying that they were merely friends.
