Ex Steelers QB Confirmed as Starter in New York
Ex Steelers QB Confirmed as Starter in New York The Pittsburgh Steelers have turned over their quarterback room for the second offseason in a row. Last year's starters are both in New York now, as Russell Wilson signed a free agent deal with the Giants, and Justin Fields joined the Jets. Advertisement While the Giants could still add a quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft with the No. 3 overall pick, the Jets are moving forward with Fields as their starter in 2025. Jets general manager Darren Mougey said on Sunday that Fields is the guy. 'We believe Justin is the starter,' Mougey said, via video from SNYJets. 'We believe in Justin. We believe we can win with Justin. We're excited about Justin's potential.' It will be Fields' third team in three seasons after joining the Steelers via trade last offseason. 'He has a quiet confidence about himself,' Jets coach Aaron Glenn told Judy Battista of NFL Media. 'He can really throw the deep ball really, really well. Obviously, his legs are something that's dynamic not just in college but the NFL as well. I just think he's ready to break out as a top-notch quarterback. Advertisement "So, he's going to do everything he can to be one of the better ones and we are going to coach our asses off to make sure he does a good job out there.' The former Broncos and Seahawks QB took over and went 6-5 as Pittsburgh lost it's final five games including the Wild Card matchup with Baltimore in the postseason. Rich Eisen Predicts $70M NFL Contract for Aaron Rodgers
The Pittsburgh Steelers are still pondering their quarterback situation for 2025. Plan A is Aaron Rodgers, with whom they've met in an extended visit at the Steelers' facility. Coach Mike Tomlin says they had a 'really good day' with Rodgers on his visit to Pittsburgh and got to know Rodgers better. Advertisement Plan B is ... well, who knows what Plan B is for Pittsburgh, or if they have a Plan C. Maybe Mason Rudolph starting is somewhere in there. A lot of the speculation about Rodgers joining any team this season involves his salary requirements. Rodgers is on record saying he won't sign a one-year deal. So he'll want at least two. And on a recent episode of his show, Rich Eisen predicts what the annual compensation would be. "I think [Aaron Rodgers is] gonna start with a four. North of [$40 million]," Eisen said during his show. "How about this? Two years, $70 million, with incentives that can pop it up more," Eisen predicted. Advertisement Rodgers is 41 years old and had a bad season last year in New York by anyone's standards. The former Super Bowl MVP signed a three-year, $112.5 million deal with the Jets, for an average annual payout of $37.5 million. Why does he think he deserves a raise for his performance in 2024, a season after suffering a torn Achilles? Rodgers couldn't even finish that deal with the Jets as they cut him a year early. That's why he's available now. One word comes to mind with regard to Rodgers and his future: Retirement. Steelers Host Potential Aaron Rodgers Plan B Quarterback
It appears the Pittsburgh Steelers aren't putting all their quarterback eggs in one basket - or maybe they are. While the team patiently waits for a decision from Aaron Rodgers, they're reportedly also looking at other options. Advertisement The Athletic's Mike DeFabo reported on Friday that the Steelers will host a former SEC signal caller in April. "Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart has a Top 30 visit scheduled with the Pittsburgh Steelers in April, per league source," DeFabo posted on X. Dart began at Southern Cal before transferring to Ole Miss in 2022. He broke Eli Manning's program's career passing record of 10,119 yards with 10,617 of his own. His collegiate career completion percentage is an impressive 65.2. The Steelers haven't given up on Rodgers, but even if they sign him, they would do well to have a younger option behind him. While the top two QBs taken in the draft are expected to be Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders, they most likely won't be there at No. 21 when the Steelers select. Advertisement Dart just might. The Ole Miss product probably wouldn't be ready to walk into the building and be a Day 1 starter anyway. His game could develop behind a veteran like Rodgers or anyone else. Pat McAfee Reveals Take on Aaron Rodgers to Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers remain the biggest talking point of this NFL offseason as the entire football world awaits the news that veteran free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers has finally signed with the black and gold ... or retired ... or something. While Rodgers was shut out of Minnesota (or was he?), and the Giants signed former Pittsburgh QB Russell Wilson, the Steelers remain the most logical landing spot for the former Super Bowl MVP. Some are perpetuating the rumor that Rodgers is waiting to announce his decision on his buddy's show. That would be the Pat McAfee Show. Advertisement But if that's the plan, McAfee himself claims to know nothing about it. "That's crazy. It's hilarious to think about," McAfee said on his show. "I do appreciate that people think that is possible." McAfee also maintained that regardless of the Vikings saying they weren't interested in signing Rodgers and that they're happy to move on with last year's first-round draft pick, J.J. McCarthy, Rodgers isn't completely shut out from the Vikings. "The Vikings had the opportunity to completely close the door on Aaron Rodgers and they didn't..I know that Aaron Rodgers loves everybody in that Pittsburgh Steelers building" Advertisement McAfee's co-host, A.J. Hawk, played a long time with Rodgers in Green Bay and knows him pretty well. And Hawk believes Rodgers really liked what he found during visits with the Steelers. "I do know that he actually really likes all the Pittsburgh staff," Hawk said. "He loves the staff, front office, everything about Pittsburgh. That's what makes the Steelers the Steelers from the top down. I think he definitely loves all them." Steelers Reinforce Offensive Line with Waivers Claim
The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to add pieces to the roster in anticipation of ... at some point ... adding a starting quarterback. On Tuesday, they added some depth to the offensive line for that starting quarterback with a waiver claim. The Steelers have claimed offensive lineman Lecitus Smith after he was released by the New England Patriots. In three NFL seasons, he's appeared in 18 games with three starts. Smith spent most of last year with the Patriots after starting the year in Green Bay. He played in eight games in 2024 with one start after making his debut in the Patriots' win over the Jets . He was also a member of the Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles practice squads in 2023 but saw no playing time that season. Smith was drafted in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft by Arizona, where he played eight games as a rookie with two starts at right guard. He played collegiately at Virginia Tech where he made 38 starts across 45 games and was a 2019 All-ACC Honorable Mention selection. The Steelers still have not signed a starting quarterback but have re-added Mason Rudolph, who is expected to be a backup in Steelers Follow Timm Hamm on X for all the Steelers & NFL news, updates & analysis throughout the season.
