Three-car garage: a luxury car, hot hatch and an EV for the price of a new C-Class
We like the Mercedes C-Class here at Auto Express, thanks to its impressive on-board technology, stunning cabin design and solid range of engines - but even in its most basic C 200 form it costs £46,175. With this budget in mind, we studied the Auto Express classifieds to see what three cars we could get instead. If you want a Mercedes to ferry you up and down the country in stylish comfort, forget the C-Class – this CLS is what you want. At £25,000, it takes up a decent chunk of our budget, but as with the two generations that preceded it, this CLS is a real looker. The 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine is silky smooth with its power delivery, which will see you go from 0-62mph in just 5.7 seconds. Of course, motorway miles are where the CLS performs best, and with just over 61,000 miles on the clock this 2018 example has plenty more ahead of it. Used Mercedes CLS deals This week saw order books of the final Ford Focus ST fill up, meaning that with Focus production ending you can't get a new one anymore. That's a real shame because as with the Fiesta ST that bit the bullet a few years ago, the Focus ST has been one of the best hot hatches you could buy. The third-generation ST may have had its thunder stolen a little by the rambunctious RS model (like any other Focus ST), but with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder motor sending 250bhp through the front wheels and a typically engaging Ford chassis underneath, it was a real hoot. This one from 2015 has only done 45,000 miles and with production of the current version ending, now could be the perfect time to buy. If you missed the opportunity to snap up this particular Ford Focus ST there are several more available through our Find a Car service... Used Ford Focus ST deals The two cars featured above offer very different things, although neither can really provide the urban runabout status some of us need. The Renault Zoe does this with aplomb, thanks to its zippy 94bhp electric motor and nimble, supermini handling. This version, with its 50kWh battery, also has a 238-mile range (almost as much as the new Renault 5) and comes with a surprisingly large 338-litre boot. If you weren't able to snap up this particular Renault Zoe in time, there are plenty of others available right now... New Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet 2025 review: performance to match its looks
While the latest C 63 has driven into a plug-in hybrid cul de sac, the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 offers the kind of driving experience that AMG buyers will be familiar with. The hybrid tech makes up far less of the powertrain, so you can revel in the sound and power of the six-cylinder engine, especially in Cabriolet guise. Sharp looks and decent all-round performance complete the package, but at a hefty price. Advertisement - Article continues below The latest Mercedes-AMG C 63 caused consternation among fans of the brand. Gone was the twin-turbo V8 of the previous model, replaced by a plug-in hybrid powertrain based upon a 2.0-litre turbo unit. To say it wasn't very well received is a bit of an understatement, because while it was rapid, the PHEV element had sucked the soul out of the flagship model. With the arrival of the new CLE to replace both the C-Class and E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet ranges, we were expecting a CLE 63 variant to join the line-up, too, but for now the top of the range is this, the CLE 53. While the C-Class AMG models stick with four-cylinder power (for now), the CLE versions come with Mercedes' turbocharged in-line six and the mild-hybrid system used on a range of the company's other models. The CLE 53 doesn't carry the badge, but it's been given an aggressive look that's in keeping with past two-door versions of the C 63 AMG. There are swollen wheelarches, and the AMG version is 75mm wider than the standard CLE. It features the obligatory big 20-inch wheels wrapped in low-profile tyres front and rear, while upgrading to the Night Edition, as tested here, brings a matt-black finish with a machined edge. The Night Edition also adds gloss black exterior trim, while AMG's signature Panamericana grille completes the makeover when compared with the standard CLE. Advertisement - Article continues below Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below View CX-5 View Tucson View Captur View C-HR The 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six packs 443bhp, so it's on a par with old V8-powered AMG models, while the hybrid element of the powertrain is designed to improve its responses as well as the efficiency. Claimed economy of 29.4mpg for the drop-top model doesn't sound promising, but it's around 5mpg better than the last C 63 AMG Cabrio achieved. The system is smooth and pretty unobtrusive, too, with an easy and smooth stop-start action when coming to a halt and pulling away. The straight-six has a distinctive note, with a hint of a rumble familiar from AMG's V8 machines. Off the line, the hybrid system uses a compressor to help spool up the turbo for faster responses, and with four-wheel-drive traction at its disposal, the drop-top CLE manages 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds, just two tenths slower than the Coupé. You need to select the Sport or Sport Plus driving modes to make the most of the drive system, because Comfort offers a more relaxed approach. In this mode and off the throttle, it can take the powertrain a moment or two to sort itself out before accelerating away. There are no such issues in the sportier settings, while the standard-fit adaptive dampers add a firmness to the ride that emphasises the car's dynamic character. Advertisement - Article continues below Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below The steering feels meaty and the chassis responds keenly, but as ever with a convertible, the extra weight of the drop top and strengthening (110kg on top of the two-tonne Coupé) mean this car is better suited to cruising. But that's something the CLE is adept at, top up or down. The cabin is hushed even at motorway speeds, while opening the fabric roof takes just 20 seconds (at up to 37mph), allowing you to enjoy the exhaust note. Mercedes' excellent Airscarf neck warmer helps keep you comfy, while the Aircap pop-up header rail means the cabin is largely unruffled by the breeze even at 60mph. And, of course, the cabin is built to the standard you would expect from Mercedes, with plenty of premium materials, metallic switchgear, multicoloured ambient lighting and even a central touchscreen that moves between 15 and 40 degrees to reduce reflections when the top is down. The Night Edition adds carbon-fibre trim, a head-up display, a Burmester sound system and massage seats, but there's a hefty price to pay for it – at £85,000 it's a £7,000 hike over the most expensive non-AMG CLE 450, although it does look more purposeful and delivers a sportier drive. Transport Canada alerts: Is your car or SUV one of the many vehicles recalled recently?
Several automakers have recalled vehicles in Canada recently. Here's a roundup of vehicle recalls provided to Transport Canada between April 21 and 28. Volvo has recalled the 2021 to 2025 Polestar 2. Nearly 8,000 cars are affected. A software problem could cause the rear-view camera image not to display on some vehicles when the transmission is shifted into reverse. 'A rear-view camera image that doesn't display could reduce a driver's ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash,' the recall, last updated April 28, said. Polestar will notify owners by mail and advise them to take their vehicle to a dealership to update the vehicle's software. Mercedes-Benz issued a pair of recalls recently. One of those recalls is on the following 2023 and 2024 model year cars and SUVs: A total of 124 vehicles are affected. The recall repairs completed by a Mercedes-Benz dealer during recall 8297011 (Transport Canada recall No. 2024-105) may not have been done correctly on some vehicles and a second repair is required. On some vehicles, the 80 A fuse may not have been manufactured properly and the fuse could overheat and fail. If this happens, there could be a sudden loss of power to the wheels and it could cause the instrument cluster not to work. 'A fuse and wiring that overheats can create the risk of a fire. A sudden loss of power to the wheels could increase the risk of a crash. Warnings, telltales and gauges that don't display could also increase the risk of a crash,' the recall, last updated April 23, said. The automaker will notify owners by mail and advise them to take their vehicle to a dealership to replace the main fuse box. A separate Mercedes-Benz recall is on the 2022 and 2023 C Class. Just three cars are affected. The driver's seatbelt may not have been installed properly on these few vehicles and the seatbelt could become loose over time and detach. 'A seatbelt that detaches in a crash could increase the risk of injury,' the recall, last updated April 25, said. The automaker will notify owners by mail and advise them to take their vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, reinstall the safety cap on the driver's seatbelt. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles issued a recall on the 2023 to 2025 Dodge Hornet and 2023 to 2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale. More than 7,000 SUVs are affected. The rear-view camera may not have been manufactured properly on some vehicles and/or there could be a problem in the rear-view camera software. This could result in the rear-view camera not displaying. 'A rear-view camera image that doesn't display could reduce a driver's ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash,' the recall, last updated April 25, said. FCA Canada will notify owners in writing and advise them to take their vehicle to a dealership to update the rear-view camera software. For certain vehicles, the dealer will also replace the radio assembly. Maserati has issued a recall on the 2024 GranTurismo. Just one car is affected. The compliance label and tire and loading information label located on the B-pillar may not be attached properly and could fall off, which would result in information about the vehicle, such as cargo carrying capacity and tire pressures, to be missing. This could lead you to overload the vehicle, which could cause poor handling or a tire failure. 'Poor handling or a tire failure could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash,' the recall, last updated April 25, said. Maserati will notify the owner by mail and advise them to take their vehicle to a dealer to install the labels.
