New Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet 2025 review: performance to match its looks

Auto Express06-05-2025
While the latest C 63 has driven into a plug-in hybrid cul de sac, the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 offers the kind of driving experience that AMG buyers will be familiar with. The hybrid tech makes up far less of the powertrain, so you can revel in the sound and power of the six-cylinder engine, especially in Cabriolet guise. Sharp looks and decent all-round performance complete the package, but at a hefty price. Advertisement - Article continues below
The latest Mercedes-AMG C 63 caused consternation among fans of the brand. Gone was the twin-turbo V8 of the previous model, replaced by a plug-in hybrid powertrain based upon a 2.0-litre turbo unit. To say it wasn't very well received is a bit of an understatement, because while it was rapid, the PHEV element had sucked the soul out of the flagship model.
With the arrival of the new CLE to replace both the C-Class and E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet ranges, we were expecting a CLE 63 variant to join the line-up, too, but for now the top of the range is this, the CLE 53. While the C-Class AMG models stick with four-cylinder power (for now), the CLE versions come with Mercedes' turbocharged in-line six and the mild-hybrid system used on a range of the company's other models.
The CLE 53 doesn't carry the badge, but it's been given an aggressive look that's in keeping with past two-door versions of the C 63 AMG. There are swollen wheelarches, and the AMG version is 75mm wider than the standard CLE. It features the obligatory big 20-inch wheels wrapped in low-profile tyres front and rear, while upgrading to the Night Edition, as tested here, brings a matt-black finish with a machined edge. The Night Edition also adds gloss black exterior trim, while AMG's signature Panamericana grille completes the makeover when compared with the standard CLE. The 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six packs 443bhp, so it's on a par with old V8-powered AMG models, while the hybrid element of the powertrain is designed to improve its responses as well as the efficiency. Claimed economy of 29.4mpg for the drop-top model doesn't sound promising, but it's around 5mpg better than the last C 63 AMG Cabrio achieved. The system is smooth and pretty unobtrusive, too, with an easy and smooth stop-start action when coming to a halt and pulling away.
The straight-six has a distinctive note, with a hint of a rumble familiar from AMG's V8 machines. Off the line, the hybrid system uses a compressor to help spool up the turbo for faster responses, and with four-wheel-drive traction at its disposal, the drop-top CLE manages 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds, just two tenths slower than the Coupé.
You need to select the Sport or Sport Plus driving modes to make the most of the drive system, because Comfort offers a more relaxed approach. In this mode and off the throttle, it can take the powertrain a moment or two to sort itself out before accelerating away. There are no such issues in the sportier settings, while the standard-fit adaptive dampers add a firmness to the ride that emphasises the car's dynamic character. The steering feels meaty and the chassis responds keenly, but as ever with a convertible, the extra weight of the drop top and strengthening (110kg on top of the two-tonne Coupé) mean this car is better suited to cruising. But that's something the CLE is adept at, top up or down. The cabin is hushed even at motorway speeds, while opening the fabric roof takes just 20 seconds (at up to 37mph), allowing you to enjoy the exhaust note.
Mercedes' excellent Airscarf neck warmer helps keep you comfy, while the Aircap pop-up header rail means the cabin is largely unruffled by the breeze even at 60mph. And, of course, the cabin is built to the standard you would expect from Mercedes, with plenty of premium materials, metallic switchgear, multicoloured ambient lighting and even a central touchscreen that moves between 15 and 40 degrees to reduce reflections when the top is down. The Night Edition adds carbon-fibre trim, a head-up display, a Burmester sound system and massage seats, but there's a hefty price to pay for it – at £85,000 it's a £7,000 hike over the most expensive non-AMG CLE 450, although it does look more purposeful and delivers a sportier drive. Lewis Hamilton comforted Kimi Antonelli after tricky Belgian GP

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli received advice from Lewis Hamilton during a challenging weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix. Antonelli, 18, has experienced a difficult run of Formula 1 races since his podium finish in Canada, including retiring from two Grands Prix and finishing 16th at Spa. Hamilton visited Antonelli in the Mercedes motorhome and encouraged him to 'keep his head up' and 'keep believing' after Antonelli was emotional following Q1 elimination. Hamilton, who also started his F1 career with a top team, expressed support for Antonelli, acknowledging the pressure on an 18-year-old in such a position. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has stated that retaining Antonelli and George Russell is now his 'priority' for the next season.

Mercedes has nearly 1,000bhp, courtesy of Brabus

You're looking at the Brabus 1000, a modified version of the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe that comes with a collection of styling and technical upgrades, and some colossal performance figures. Brabus has not announced any prices for its new two-door flagship, but given that the car on which it's based already costs well over £185,000, we suspect it'll be another big number. Advertisement - Article continues below The company's modifications to the Porsche 911 rival run deep, including a heavy update of AMG's twin-turbocharged V8 engine. It has been enlarged from 4.0 to 4.5 litres, plus two new turbochargers with higher boost pressures have been fitted. However, the car's headline power figure isn't derived from just a V8 engine, because Brabus has based the 1000 on the GT 63 S E Performance, which pairs a 197bhp electrified rear axle with the traditional petrol engine. As such, this would mean the V8 engine develops around 800bhp in order to create the total output of 1000hp (987bhp), from which the car's name is derived. This is the same powertrain used in the four-door Brabus Rocket 1000, which produces 1,820Nm of torque. However, to protect the nine-speed automatic transmission, it is limited to 'only' 1,620Nm in the new model. Brabus quotes a 0-62mph time of 2.6 seconds for the 1000, which is about 0.2 seconds faster than the AMG model it's based on, and its top speed is electronically limited to 198mph. The 1000 also features a range of styling upgrades, most of which are made from carbon fibre. These include new splitters, spoilers and wings, while the grille also features new inserts on either side, plus there's a new set of staggered 21 and 22-inch wheels. There's no detail on any updates to the chassis, aside from a new height-adjustable suspension. How this works with AMG's hydraulically-interconnected dampers, if they are still fitted, remains to be seen. If, however, you're in the market for a high performance AMG model, make sure to check out Auto Express's online marketplace . Brabus has also been busy inside the car, reupholstering much of the cabin and replacing many of the existing trim pieces with either gloss carbon or red anodised aluminium. Kimi Antonelli reveals ‘really nice' words of wisdom from Lewis Hamilton

Kimi Antonelli has revealed the advice Lewis Hamilton gave him amid an emotional weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix. Antonelli, the 18-year-old Italian who replaced Hamilton at Mercedes this season, has endured a difficult run of F1 races since finishing on the podium in Canada last month, retiring from two grands prix and finishing 16th at Spa on Sunday. Prior to Sunday's race, Hamilton was spotted leaving the Mercedes motorhome as he paid Antonelli, 22 years his junior, a supportive visit. Antonelli was emotional in the media pen after being knocked out in Q1 of qualifying on Saturday and, a day later, the Italian revealed what Hamilton said to him amid a tricky period. 'He came to say hi to the team and definitely we had a couple of words,' Antonelli said. 'He was telling me to keep my head up and that it's normal to have bad weekends. 'And to just keep believing. It was really nice.' Hamilton, who was arguably the last driver to make his F1 debut with a top team with McLaren in 2007, threw his support behind the teenager. 'I can't imagine what it's like at 18, or try to imagine what it's like at 18, to do what he's doing,' Ferrari driver Hamilton told Sky Sports F1. 'He's been doing fantastic. But to be thrown in at the deep end at 18… he hadn't even had his driving licence when he first started racing. 'I think it's a lot on someone's shoulders. He's doing a great job and he's got a great group of people around him. So, I think you've just got to take it in your stride, which I think he is. 'And he's got Bono [Peter Bonnington, who used to work with Hamilton] by his side. He doesn't have anyone better.' Hamilton joked in Thursday's press conference that he could help Antonelli 'work' Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, as the Italian eyes a new contract with the Silver Arrows. Wolff, with Max Verstappen set to stay at Red Bull for 2026, admitted it is now his 'priority' to keep his current driver line-up of Antonelli and George Russell for next year. Antonelli is seventh in the world championship after 13 races, 94 points behind teammate Russell.
