Cillian Murphy, Daniel Craig in Talks to Star in Damien Chazelle's Next Movie
Yara Sameh Cillian Murphy and Daniel Craig are in talks to star in an untitled prison drama movie from 'La La Land' director Damien Chazelle. The Oscar-winning filmmaker will write and direct the untitled project for Paramount Pictures. Chazelle is also producing with Olivia Hamilton through their company, Wild Chickens Productions. If Murphy and Craig's deals close, production is aiming to start later this year. The film reunites Chazelle with Paramount, which funded the director's prior theatrical swing, 2022's 'Babylon.' The ode to showbiz, starring Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, became an epic box office disaster with $63 million worldwide against its $80 million budget. Chazelle's other film credits include 'Whiplash' and 'First Man.' Chazelle set a first-look deal with Paramount in 2022. The studio announced in 2024 that Chazelle was working on a new movie — a biopic about stunt performer Evel Knievel led by Leonardo DiCaprio — but the filmmaker pivoted his attention after DiCaprio dropped out. Instead, Chazelle will have to settle for working with other A-list talent. Murphy recently won an Oscar for playing the theoretical physicist who developed the atomic bomb in Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer.' Meanwhile, Craig, who recently retired as James Bond, will appear next in Rian Johnson's third 'Knives Out' mystery — titled 'Wake Up Dead Man' — and Greta Gerwig's 'Narnia' adaptation. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies

Damien Chazelle trades Evel Knievel film with Leonardo DiCaprio for prison drama starring Cillian Murphy, Daniel Craig
Oscar-winning writer/director Damien Chazelle ('La La Land') may have faced box office challenges with his last two films, First Man and Babylon, but he continues to draw top-tier talent. Despite underperforming financially, Chazelle remains a favorite among Hollywood's A-list, keeping studios invested in his creative ventures. His next project was initially slated to be an Evel Knievel biopic, potentially starring Leonardo DiCaprio. However, according to Deadline, the deal couldn't be finalized—likely due to financial demands—prompting Chazelle to pivot to a prison drama he's been developing for several years. With that shift, he's reportedly lined up Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) and Academy Award nominee Daniel Craig for lead roles. With Evel Knievel on hold and deals not yet finalized, the prison drama is now positioned as Chazelle's next project, with production expected to begin later this year. While plot details remain under wraps, Chazelle will direct and has written the script. He will also produce through his Wild Chickens Productions banner alongside Olivia Hamilton. Given Chazelle's efficient production style, a fall shoot could set the film up for a Venice 2026 premiere—the same festival where La La Land made its acclaimed debut. Though Babylon grossed just $63 million worldwide against an $80 million budget, and First Man brought in $105.6 million globally, Chazelle continues to earn the confidence of studios and collaborators. This pivot underscores his range, transitioning from ambitious spectacle to grounded, character-driven storytelling.

Cillian Murphy and Daniel Craig in talks to star in Damien Chazelle's Paramount movie
Cillian Murphy and Daniel Craig are in talks to appear in Damien Chazelle's next movie. Chazelle has penned the script for an as-yet untitled motion picture, which he is also due to direct, and produce alongside Olivia Hamilton. According to Deadline, Craig and Murphy are in negotiations about appearing in the project, which insiders say is set in a prison. Production is expected to get underway later this year, if former James Bond star Craig and 'Peaky Blinders' actor Murphy sign up for the movie. News of the Paramount Pictures film first emerged in April 2024. It wasn't known who might star in the motion picture, but it was claimed at the time that Chazelle and Paramount bosses were expected to hold meetings with A-list talent for the project. Chazelle signed a deal with Paramount at the end of 2022, after working with the studio on his film 'Babylon' - which bombed at the box office despite starring Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt. The filmmaker acknowledged that the failure of the period movie is likely to impact the amount of funding he gets for future films. Speaking on the 'Talking Pictures' podcast, he said: "Certainly, in financial terms, 'Babylon' didn't work at all. You try to not have that effect what you're doing creatively, but, at some level, it can't help but affect it. But maybe that's OK? "I have a very mixed mind about it. Who knows. Maybe I won't be able to get this one made. I have no idea. We'll have to wait and see. "I've been head in the sand. I've been sort of busy writing. So I'll get a real taste of how it's changed or not [since 'Babylon'] once I get to finish this script and try to actually get it made. "I'm in a sort of trepidatious state of mind, but I have no illusions. I won't get a budget of 'Babylon' size any time soon, or at least not on this next one."

Cillian Murphy and Daniel Craig in talks for prison drama
It is reported that Cillian Murphy and Daniel Craig are in negotiations to star in a prison drama from La La Land and Whiplash director Damien Chazelle. US entertainment trade publication The Hollywood Reporter says the film has been described as "a two-hander set in a prison" with a production start eyed for later this year. The news was first reported by the US entertainment trade publication Deadline. The Hollywood Reporter says Chazelle had been working on a planned Leonardo DiCaprio-starring biopic of the stunt rider Evel Knievel but has since pivoted to the prison project. "At one point, Chazelle was working with DiCaprio on the prison project before the two focused on Knievel," The Hollywood Reporter adds. Murphy was seen on cinema screens in Small Things Like These last year and has since completed filming on the Peaky Blinders movie.
