Farm Aid to Celebrate 40th Anniversary in Minneapolis

Farm Aid will celebrate its 40th anniversary on September 20 with a super-sized show at Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, featuring Farm Aid board members Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews, and Margo Price in addition to Billy Strings, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, Trampled by Turtles, Waxahatchee, Eric Burton of Black Pumas, Jesse Welles, Madeline Edwards, and others that have yet to be announced. Ticket sales begin May 16. 'Family farmers are the heart of this country, and we depend on each other for good food and strong communities,' Nelson says in a statement. 'For 40 years, Farm Aid and our partners have stood with farmers, supporting them to stay on their land even when corporate power, bad policies and broken promises make it harder to keep going. This year, we're proud to bring Farm Aid to Minnesota to celebrate the farmers who sustain us and to fight for a food system that works for all of us. Family farmers aren't backing down, and neither are we.' But this is the first time it's touched down in Minneapolis. It will be the kickoff event to a year-long celebration of Farm Aid. 'We're grateful to our dedicated board members and hundreds of generous artists who have brought us together year after year to celebrate family farmers and highlight the challenges they face every day,' Farm Aid Co-Executive Director Jennifer Fahy says in a statement. 'Our anniversary marks a critical time for the nation to come together in support of the family farmers we all depend on. Our work isn't done. There are significant threats to the future of family farm agriculture and our food system. Farm Aid 40 is an opportunity to call those out and work for the food system that farmers, eaters and our planet all deserve.' The 2024 incarnation of Farm Aid took place at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, New York. It featured the debut of Neil Young's new band the Chrome Hearts. They're set centered around classics like 'Harvest Moon,' 'Heart of Gold,' 'Unknown Legend,' and 'Powderfinger.' They hit the road this year for their first proper tour, and will play Farm Aid at the end of the run. Dave Matthews is spending much of the summer on the road with the Dave Matthews Band. But in keeping with longtime Farm Aid tradition, he'll play an acoustic set with Tim Reynolds at the event. The vast majority of Farm Aid concerts take place at outdoor amphitheaters. This is the first one at a stadium since the 2012 Farm Aid at Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey, Pennsylvania. '80s Legend Talks About His Surprise Remake With Willie Nelson

has kept a low profile since he left Journey for good in 1998, but now the reclusive singer is back with a high-profile project. Perry has covered his 1983 Journey hit 'Faithfully' with music legend for a good cause. The proceeds from the single will benefit Farm Aid, the charity that's celebrating its 40th anniversary that was started by Nelson, and John Mellencamp. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 In a new interview in the Los Angeles Times, Perry, 76, spoke about the project and what it was like working with the 92-year-old music legend. 'I think that the lyrics are so sound that they're timeless. But I must tell you that Willie Nelson set a tone when he sang it. That launched me in his direction, of how to interpret those lyrics and sing with him. It sets the tone and the watermark. Willie is the Sinatra of country music. When you sing laid back like that, like Tony Bennett does, he just says it like he feels it, and he puts it where he feels it. It takes a minute to really fall into that relaxed emotional expression. It was a new experience for me to sing with such a legend like this guy,' Perry told the L.A. Times. Perry's last solo album was the 2021 Christmas release The Season, but he has guested on other recordings, including 's 2023 all-star Rockstar album, in which he and the country legend covered another Journey classic, 1981's 'Open Arms.''At this point in my life, I'm really enjoying doing anything that feels just emotionally expressive to me. It's a new freedom for me. You know, Willie used to come to the shows in Texas when we were touring in the early '80s, that's where I first met him. When we were doing the song 'Faithfully,' I swear to you, back then, I always wanted to hear his voice on it. This is the 40th anniversary of Farm Aid, so it was the perfect time to just for us to be together, and it's a bucket list thing to sing with Willie Nelson,' Perry told the outlet. Aside from working with Nelson, Perry told the L.A. Times that 'Farm Aid is close to my heart, because I know how difficult it is to be a farmer. You've really got to love it.' He also revealed he has personal ties to farming. 'I was raised in the San Joaquin Valley,' he told the Times. 'My grandfather had two dairy farms. I remember getting ice cream made from that fresh cream at the top of that vat. I saw the commitment that farmers have to what they do.'

Steve Perry sings Journey's ‘Faithfully' for the first time in 30 years — with Willie Nelson

In a rare return to the music of his former band, Steve Perry has re-recorded Journey 's 1983 power ballad 'Faithfully,' this time as a duet with country music legend Willie Nelson. The track marks Perry's first time singing the song in three decades and celebrates the 40th anniversary of Farm Aid, the nonprofit Nelson co-founded to support family farmers. The collaboration was produced remotely, with Nelson recording at Ronnie's Place in Nashville and Perry at his own studio, Rock the Box, in Los Angeles. The duet features an ensemble of veteran session musicians, including Mike Rojas on piano, James Mitchell on electric guitar and Nelson's longtime harmonica player Mickey Raphael. An animated video by Patrick Atkins accompanies the release. 'No one has a voice or vocal phrasing anything like Willie Nelson,' Perry said in a statement. 'Singing this duet with Willie has been something I've always wanted to do. After recording 'Faithfully' with Journey, I always felt it would be a great song for Willie too. What a wonderful experience it was to finally sing with Willie. I'm so proud of what we have accomplished together.' Nelson, echoing the sentiment, called the collaboration 'a meaningful experience.' 'It was a pleasure to collaborate on this song,' he added. 'I'm proud that we could create something meaningful and use it to give back through Farm Aid.' Journey recruited Perry as its operatic lead singer in 1977 under threat of getting dropped by Columbia Records, and went on to sell nearly 100 million albums globally. But Journey's commercial streak came to an abrupt halt in 1987 when a road-weary Perry announced he was taking a hiatus from the band — then again after a brief reunion from 1995 to 1998. Perry, who last toured in 1995, has made only sporadic public appearances in the years since. He gave a speech during the band's 2017 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame but did not sing. While he has released solo material — including 2018's 'Traces' and 2021's holiday album 'The Season' — he has largely avoided revisiting Journey's catalog until recently, beginning with a rendition of 'Open Arms' with Dolly Parton in 2023. The new version of 'Faithfully' is available now on streaming platforms, with all proceeds benefiting Farm Aid.
