Tesco brings back nostaglic 90s beer to stores after being discontinued over 20 years ago

This extremely popular bevy was well known for its bright red and yellow logo with two large D's. For those wanting to reminisce about the 90s, Brits can now do so with a cool drink in the garden this summer as Tesco has brought back a nostalgic beer that was extremely popular over 30 years ago. Two decades on since it was discontinued, the supermarket giant has brought Double Diamond back to UK stores. While the nostalgic drink returned to pubs last year as a pale ale, shoppers will now be able to pick up a pack of four 440ml bottles from Tesco for £5.75, or for £5 if shoppers are a clubcard member. ‌ First brewed in 1876 as an India Pale Ale, the popular 90s drink was widely recognised for its bright red and yellow with two large D's. Many people also memorised its famous slogan: "A Double Diamond works wonders." ‌ At its peak, over 50million pints of Double Diamond were sold in a single year, reports the Mirror. However, its popularity soon came to an end as the beer was discontinued in 2003. Tesco's version of Double Diamond has an ABV of 3.8 per cent and is made with a new recipe that features Citra, Colombus and Mosaic hops. ‌ Jamie Allsopp, re-founder of Allsopp and Sons, said: "Double Diamond is our A-list star. This sessionable Pale Ale is the next iteration of Double Diamond and we hope will find a place in the affections of new drinkers, as well as those that haven't tasted it in 30 years." Double Diamond made its return to the UK last year, with 12 pubs currently selling the pale ale. Unfortunately none of these establishments are in Scotland, but with Double Diamond returning to Tesco stores, Scots will once again have the chance to indulge in the beer. Allsopp and Sons announced the return of Double Diamond last year through their Instagram. With a picture that read "Only here for the beer", the caption said: "It's back, and it still works wonders! ‌ "After months of research and trialling recipes to make it perfect, we've relaunched Double Diamond. Revived as a 3.8% pale ale that drinks like a lager, it's a delicious, easy-going, sessionable draught beer, coming very soon to your favourite pubs!" Many fans raved in the comments, with one person writing: "Had some today absolutely delicious !!" Another Instagram user added: "I still remember the jingle!" A third commenter went as far as to quote the jingle, saying: "Double Diamond works wonders, works wonders, so drink one today." ‌ In other beer news, Manchester-based brewery Marble Beer has recently increased the alcohol level of their flagship pale ale following various complaints from customers. After new tax rules were introduced for alcohol products, the brewery decided to slash their alcohol by volume (ABV) from 3.9 per cent to 3.4 per cent. However, following grumbles from customers, Marble has now confirmed it has changed its mind and that their beer will go back to its original 3.9 per cent. The beer is available in cans, cask and keg formats. ‌ Since August 2023, how drinks in the UK are taxed has changed. Instead of being based on the categories of wine, beer, spirits and ciders, alcoholic beverages are now taxed based on their strength. This means drinks with an ABV below 3.5 per cent are taxed at a lower rate. As a result of this change, Marble wasn't the only brewery who decided to lower the alcohol content in some of its products this year. Originally, Grolsch Premium Pilsner had an ABV of five per cent. However, after its relaunch in 2020, it was slashed to four per cent by its parent firm Asahi. Now with the new drink tax, the premium pilsner is now down to 3.4 per cent to fit in with the lower tax rate. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Beloved 90s beer returns to UK supermarkets after being axed in 2003

After a two-decade hiatus, one of the UK's most popular beers is now back on supermarket shelves. Double Diamond, first brewed in 1879 by Allsopp & Sons of Burton upon Trent, was among the nation's best-sellers from the 1950s right through to the early 1990s. While drinkers loved its classic pale ale flavour, the brand became a household name due to its distinctive red and yellow logo and catchy advertising slogans: 'Double Diamonds works wonders' and 'Only here for the beer.' However, over the years it fell out of favour, and Double Diamond gradually disappeared before Carlsberg (which had taken over Allsopp's) discontinued off-trade sales in 2003 and later ceased production entirely. Fans were overjoyed when the brewery announced its return to pubs late last year, with punters who tested Double Diamond 2.0 on draft describing it as 'stunning'. And now, the 'session' beer is also available to enjoy at home; priced at £5.75 (or £5 for Clubcard holders) for a pack of four 440ml bottles, in store and online at Tesco. Die-hards may notice a difference between the original and the relaunched version, as it's 'brewed to a new and improved recipe' with a slightly lower ABV of 3.8%. But Jamie Allsopp, re-founder of Allsopp & Sons, said he hopes this tweaked iteration 'will find a place in the affections of new drinkers, as well as those that haven't tasted it in 30 years'. He added: 'Double Diamond is our A-list star, a beer so popular it was up in lights on Piccadilly Circus, so famous the government considered nationalising it, a beer that worked such wonders it sold 50 million pints a year.' Nostalgic beer from the 90s returns to UK supermarkets after 30-year hiatus

Double Diamond returned to pubs last year as a pale ale, but now Tesco is selling packs of four 440ml bottles for £5.75, or £5 with a Clubcard. Known for its bright red and yellow logo with two large Ds, Double Diamond was first brewed in 1876 as an India Pale Ale and was extremely popular in the 90s, with more than 50 million pints being sold in a single year at its peak. ‌ You may also remember it from its famous slogan: "A Double Diamond works wonders." But sadly as its popularity waned, Double Diamond was discontinued in the 2000s. ‌ The version of Double Diamond in Tesco has an ABV of 3.8% and is made with a new recipe featuring Citra, Columbus and Mosaic hops. Double Diamond is currently available at 12 pubs across the UK with plans to expand it to more locations. In a social media post published on the Allsopp & Sons Instagram page last year, announcing the return of Double Diamond, one person said: "Had some today absolutely delicious !!" Another said: "I still remember the jingle!" A third person, quoting another Double Diamond jingle, said: "Double Diamond works wonders, works wonders, so drink one today." It comes after Manchester-based brewery Marble Beer increased the alcohol level on its flagship pale ale following complaints from customers. Marble had slashed the alcohol by volume (ABV) from 3.9% to 3.4% after new tax rules were introduced for alcohol products. ‌ However, Marble has now confirmed it has U-turned on this decision, with the beer going back up to 3.9%. The beer is available in cask and keg formats and also in cans. In the UK, drinks are now taxed based on their strength, rather than the previous categories of wine, beer, spirits, and ciders. This system came into effect in August 2023. Alcoholic drinks with an ABV below 3.5% are taxed at a lower rate. Grolsch Premium Pilsner had a higher ABV of 5% up until its relaunch in 2020 when it was slashed to 4% by parent firm Asahi. It has now been slashed again to 3.4%.

Iconic beer from the 90s returns to supermarkets around the UK

AN iconic beer from the 90s has made a triumphant return and is now available in the UK's largest supermarket chain. This pale ale was among the nation's best-selling beverages from the 1950s through to the early 1990s. However, it eventually fell out of favour and was discontinued in 2003. Double Diamond made its return to the hand pumps of Britain's pubs late last year, and to the delight of its fans, it is now also available on the high street. Tesco is selling packs of four 440ml bottles for £5.75, or just £5 for Clubcard holders. The beer can be purchased both in-store and online. Double Diamond was first brewed in 1876 as an Indian Pale Ale. It was so popular that it was advertised in Piccadilly Circus and used the slogan "A Double Diamond works wonders". After selling more than 50million pints in a single year it was almost nationalised in the 1960s. The new iteration of Double Diamond takes inspiration from the original 1922 IPA but is made using an all-new recipe. The beer has an ABV of 3.8% and is made with Citra, Columbus and Mosaic hops. Jamie Allsopp, re-founder of Allsopp & Sons, said: "Double Diamond is our A-list star. The 8 ways a pint of beer a day can help BOOST your health – from cancer to diabetes "This sessionable Pale Ale is the next iteration of Double Diamond and we hope will find a place in the affections of new drinkers, as well as those that haven't tasted it in 30 years." Double Diamond is now available at 12 pubs across the UK, offering fans the chance to enjoy a pint of this iconic beer. In London, it is served at prestigious venues such as The Princess Royal in Notting Hill, The Barley Mow in Mayfair, and The Alfred Tennyson in Belgravia. It is also available at The Lucky Saint Pub in Marylebone, operated by the alcohol-free beer brand, as well as The Last Judgement in Chancery Lane, The Hole In The Wall in Waterloo, The Duke of York in Fitzrovia, and The King & Queen in Fitzrovia. The brewer's first new pub in over 90 years, The Blue Stoops, located on Kensington Church Street in London, has also started serving Double Diamond. Outside the capital, Double Diamond is on tap at four pubs across the UK. In Burton upon Trent, you can enjoy a pint at The Last Heretic and Beeropolis. In Oxfordshire, it is available at The Mason's Arms in Clanfield, and in Derbyshire, you'll find it at The Bluebell in Kirk Langley. 2 Allsopp's has confirmed plans to expand distribution further across the country in the near future. Meanwhile, Heineken has revived a Guinness rival, Murphy's stout, which is now back in major supermarkets after a three-year absence. Murphy's stout made its return just in time for St Patrick's Day, and shoppers can grab a pack of 10 440ml cans from Tesco for only £10 with a Clubcard. This highly praised alternative to Guinness is proving popular among fans of stout.
