Bozeman fires softball coach following historic season

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WMBB) — In a surprising move, Deane Bozeman High School is parting ways with head softball coach Jared Smith, just weeks after their first playoff win in program history. Smith confirmed Thursday night that he was informed by Bozeman Principal Ivan Beach that the the school is, 'Going in another direction with the program.' Bozeman (14-11) advanced to the regional semifinals, after going on the road and defeating softball powerhouse Florida High in Tallahassee. The Bucks eventually fell to state runner-up North Bay Haven, the same team that beat them in the district finals. Jared and his wife, Amber, have led the program for several years, guiding the team to three postseason appearances and helping nearly a dozen players reach the collegiate level. He served as an assistant at Bozeman from 2009-2012, took over as head coach in 2013-2014 and returned again from 2017-2025. All of Bozeman's softball regional appearances have been under the leadership of Jared Smith as head coach. The Bucks finished the season with four players named to the All-County First Team and three to the Second Team, one an Honorable Mention. All but one of those players are expected to return next spring. The school has not made an announcement on the decision to make a coaching change. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Man offering cattle sales online accused of theft

Authorities say a man offered cattle for sale, made buyers pay a deposit and failed to deliver the animals. Several victims say Garrett Hill, also known as Jared Smith, advertised cattle for sale, required victims to pay a deposit through Cash App or an online transfer and then never delivered the cattle. According to Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler J. Harper, more people could have been victimized in the case. Hill, who authorities accuse of cattle theft by deception, was arrested by the Franklin County Sheriff's Office on May 7. Georgia Department of Agriculture Law Enforcement said they are coordinating with Franklin County's Criminal Investigations Division and the Arkansas Department of Agriculture Law Enforcement on this investigation. The Georgia Department of Agriculture offered a warning to people buying pets over the internet, saying it's a good idea to exercise similar caution when buying cattle, too. 'Many of these criminals operate overseas,' the department's website cautions. 'Finding and prosecuting them could be extremely difficult; maybe impossible. Research the seller thoroughly. Only purchase from sellers you can validate.' Those seeking to buy cattle can find them at auction. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has a list of feeder cattle auction sites. These are the best Hoka shoes for walking in 2025

When it comes to orthopedic shoes, or even simply comfortable walking shoes, footwear brand Hoka is often top of mind. Whether you're trying to get your steps in, need cushioned sneakers for a walking-heavy trip, or you're in the market for new hiking boots, Hoka's got you covered. It's no wonder the brand is beloved by podiatrists and celebrities alike. The brand's styles range from classic sneakers to hiking boots and recovery sandals, all of which boast the same innovations that have made Hoka incredibly popular. We talked to Jared Smith, Hoka's product line manager, to get the scoop on what makes them great walking shoes. According to Smith, the brand uses three core technologies in all of its products. "We like to call it the heart of Hoka," he said. The cushioned midsole, active foot frame and patented MetaRocker work together to create the brand's signature feel, he said. Hoka has a ton of different styles and silhouettes, so it may be hard to pick the best pair for your walking style. We asked podiatrists, hiking enthusiasts and our own experts to weigh in on the best Hokas for walking. Bonus: Each pair we've highlighted comes in both men's and women's styles. The best Hoka shoes for walking How we chose the best Hoka shoes for walking Factors to consider when choosing Hokas for walking FAQs Meet our experts Update, April 16, 2025: We checked all product prices and availability. Our number one pick for the best Hoka shoes for walking remains unchanged. (back to top) To figure out which Hokas were the best of the best, we consulted brand insiders, podiatrists, hiking enthusiasts and our own shopping editors. They weighed in on what to look for when picking the right style for your specific needs. We also polled this crew to find out which Hokas are their favorites — because there's nothing like a firsthand recommendation! (back to top) Support: Supportive walking shoes are a must, especially when it comes to arches. The sole shouldn't twist too much, and the shoe should provide stability with every step. Comfort: Features like extra cushioning, memory foam insoles and breathable uppers are all important in walking shoes. Durability: With apologies to Nancy Sinatra, these shoes are made for walking. You need a pair that's built to withstand plenty of strolls and won't wear out after a few uses. Weight: If you're trying to get your steps in, the last thing you want is a pair of heavy shoes weighing you down. Most Hokas weigh less than a pound. Fit: A walking shoe should be wide enough for you to splay your toes for better balance and stability, but it should still be snug enough to prevent your foot from rolling while you walk. (back to top) Whenever we ask podiatrists to list their favorite shoes, Hokas are almost always mentioned because of how comfortable and supportive they are for everyday wear. Brenner told us she loves the brand because it meets "all the criteria of a supportive shoe. I especially like that they make their shoes with the EVA material for shock absorption." Many Hokas have also earned the American Podiatric Medical Association Seal of Acceptance. This means they have been reviewed and approved by podiatrists to ensure they promote foot health, so you can feel good about wearing them daily. If you've ever seen a pair of Hokas, you know about the thick, cushioned midsole. The shoes are also designed to work as an ultra-comfortable shock absorber that doesn't weigh you down. Meanwhile, the foot frame cradles your foot to offer extra support and keep it in place no matter the terrain. As for the MetaRocker, Smith explained it like this: "It's a curved shoe geometry that complements the natural gait cycle. It can be dialed up to create a faster transition in the forefoot or dialed down to provide more ground contact and stability." (back to top) Dr. Hillary Brenner, a New York-based podiatric surgeon Cris Hazzard, hiking expert with Jared Smith, Hoka product line manager Verna Volker, ultra-marathoner and Hoka ambassador Dr. Polina Zaydenberg, a New York City-based podiatrist (back to top)
