Report: Florida football special teams coach moving on to Houston

One of the special teams' coaches for Florida football is moving on to a new job. According to a report by Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, Florida Gators Game Changer coordinator Chris Couch is accepting the special teams coordinator job at Houston. Advertisement The move reunites Couch with Houston coach Willie Fritz, whom he worked under at Tulane from 2016-20. Couch endured some ups and downs in his first two years under head coach Billy Napier as lead special teams' analyst. Under Couch, Florida at times failed to line up correctly, resulting in either 10 players or too many players on the field in changeovers for punts and field goal attempts. During the 2024 offseason, Florida added special teams' coordinator Joe Houston to work with Couch. Houston, a former special teams assistant with the New England Patriots (2020-23) and special teams coach at Iowa State (2016-18), added a new voice with experience. Due to a change in NCAA rules, both analysts were able to work on the field during 2024 fall camp, which resulted in smoother special teams' operation during the 2024 season. Coach joins former UF co-defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong as the second coach to leave the Gators for Houston in the last seven months. Armstrong took over as Houston defensive coordinator last December. Advertisement Kevin Brockway is The Gainesville Sun's Florida beat writer. Texas A&M football loses its second WR to the transfer portal

Texas A&M football loses its second WR to the transfer portal Texas A&M wide receiver Ernest Campbell has entered the transfer portal, @chris_hummer and I have learned for @cbssports/@247Sports. Was a Class of 2024 four-star — Matt Zenitz (@mzenitz) April 23, 2025 The 2025 Spring Transfer portal has been relatively quiet for Texas A&M, with coach Mike Elko only reaching out to a handful of available players. However, on Wednesday morning, news broke that a second wide receiver has decided to enter the portal. Ernest Campbell, a former 4-star wide receiver and track star, has announced his entry into the transfer portal, according to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports. Known for his blazing speed, the Texas A&M athlete is a 4-time state champion in the 100M with a personal best of 10.29 (high school). While his talent on the track under Coach Pat Henry was undeniable, winning gold recently at the Oregon Team Invitational (10.57) and USTA Invitational (10.28), Campbell's football opportunities were limited due to his position on the depth chart. At 5'9" and 145 lbs upon entering college, Campbell has worked to develop physically while balancing his dual-sport commitments. His transfer aligns with his desire to gain more playing time on the football field, even as his track future looked exceptionally bright with the Aggies. A fresh start could help him excel in both football and track, or focus on one to achieve his goals. For all the latest updates for the Spring Transfer portal, visit here. Matt Patricia reportedly could be eyeing prestigious college job

Former New England Patriots assistant coach Matt Patricia was reportedly in Columbus earlier in the week for a meeting with the Ohio State Buckeyes about their defensive coordinator position, per 247 Sports' Matt Zenitz. Patricia was last in the NFL as a senior defensive assistant for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023. However, his contract expired at the end of the season and was not renewed. He held the role of defensive coordinator for the Patriots from 2012-2017, before taking on a head coaching job with the Detroit Lions. The Buckeyes are looking for a new defensive coordinator following the departure of Jim Knowles to Penn State in January. It's a program hoping to repeat as national champions under head coach Ryan Day. He could be a tremendous asset to an Ohio State program that has boasted strong defensive units over the last couple of seasons.

Report: Patriots 'targeting' Colts assistant defensive coach

As the New England Patriots build out their new coaching staff under new head coach Mike Vrabel, they are reportedly targeting a current member of the Indianapolis Colts' defensive coaching staff. According to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, the Patriots are 'targeting' Colts' assistant defensive backs coach Justin Hamilton for a role on the New England defensive staff. The #Patriots are targeting #Colts assistant defensive backs coach Justin Hamilton for a role on their defensive staff, sources tell me and @TomLoy247 for @CBSSports/@247Sports. The ex-Virginia Tech star safety was Virginia Tech's defensive coordinator in 2021 and '22. Worked… — Matt Zenitz (@mzenitz) January 30, 2025 The 2024 season was Hamilton's first with the Colts, working under now-former defensive backs coach Ron Milus on Gus Bradley's defensive staff. Of note when it comes to the Patriots' interest in Hamilton, he was the Tennessee Titans' defensive quality control coach in 2023, working alongside Vrabel at that time. Before making the leap to the NFL level with Tennessee in 2023, Hamilton was the Virginia Tech defensive coordinator from 2020-2021. As new Colts' defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo builds out his own defensive staff, what we know right now is that Charlie Partridge will remain the defensive line coach, while James Bettcher will be the new linebackers coach. As we detailed recently, the Colts do still have an opening at this time for their defensive backs coaching role. For what it's worth, while Milus coached the defensive backs under Bradley, the Bengals under Anarumo had a separate cornerbacks coach and safeties coach. We will see if the Colts take that approach this season.

Report: Giants expected to hire Illinois assistant Grant Morgan

The New York Giants lost defensive assistant Zak Kuhr late last week but have already found themselves a replacement. Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports reports that the Giants are expected to hire Illinois assistant linebackers coach Grant Morgan. Before joining the Fighting Illini, Morgan had a very brief cup of coffee in the NFL. He was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2022 and initially made their practice squad. However, he was released a day after their Week 1 loss to the Washington Commanders that year. Morgan had a stellar career at Arkansas, earning First-Team All-SEC and Second-Team All-American honors in 2020. In 2021, he won the Burlsworth Trophy, given to the most outstanding FBS player who began his career as a walk-on. In 58 career games at the college level, Morgan recorded 313 tackles (119 solo, 25 for a loss), one forced fumble, 4.5 sacks, 11 passes defensed, two interceptions, and one defensive touchdown.
