Former Endurance Racing boss Gerard Neveu takes Retromobile to New York

Gerard Neveu will steer the organizing team for the event at New York's Javits Centre from November 19-22 next year. After 25 years in the motorsport and automotive industries Neveu has an extensive contacts book and deep experience of staging international events and operating in the US market. During his decade at the helm of WEC, he laid the groundwork for the championship as it is today, with hybrid technology attracting multiple manufacturers. Neveu was also one of the key protagonists in the convergence of regulations between the US based International Motor Sports Association (IMSA, owned by NASCAR) and the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO, owner of WEC and founder of the 24 Hours of Le Mans). Prior to WEC he served as the Director of Paul Ricard Circuit in the South of France. Retromobile Paris celebrates its 50th anniversary next year, and the New York show aims to capitalize on the burgeoning US classic car scene, where more than 50% of the global collectors' cars market is concentrated. Neveu's first moves in the role have been to secure 400,000 square feet in four halls in Javits Center and strike an auction partnership with Gooding Christie's. 'The concept of Retromobile is special,' says Neveu. 'You find both the biggest car collectors and vendors from all around the world at the same time, plus manufacturers and brokers. You also have a fan community attending the event, who can live out their dreams, see cars and people which may bring back precious memories. Retromobile is a celebration of all things automotive, including but not limited to, motorsport. And it is a place where you can live and share your passion for cars of all types.' James Allen The choice of New York, rather than the West Coast or Miami was based on a number of factors, with logistics being a key driver. 'But also because around New York you already have a huge community of car collectors and brokers,' says Neveu. 'For the inaugural show we are looking for 200-250 exhibitors (with more than 80% coming from the USA) and 50,000 – 60,000 visitors. 'The partnership with Gooding Christie's is great for the event because, with the combination of expertise from Gooding and the prestige of Christie's, we have every reason to hope for a spectacular classic car auction." The New York event has a lot to live up to. Retromobile Paris last year attracted 146,000 visitors, of whom 19% were from outside France and 600 exhibitors with auction sales of over $125m.'I'm trying to bring my experience of managing big automotive events and make sure we will be able to offer a great and unique experience to our visitors and participants,' says Neveu. 'The big challenge facing us will be to attain the heights of the prestigious Retromobile Paris. The 50th anniversary of Retromobile next year is the perfect opportunity to export the concept of this exclusive event elsewhere for the very first time and we will do our best to deliver an event in New York with the same DNA as Paris at its core but with the vibrant American colors running right through it.' The former CEO of the FIA World Endurance Championship, Gerard Neveu, has taken on the role of CEO of Retromobile US, the first expansion of Paris' celebrated annual gathering of car collectors, vendors and enthusiasts. Wanna Buy a Car? The Boss at RM Sotheby's Auctions Has Some Advice

The specter of tariffs has new automobile manufacturers bracing for the worst, but for the collecting side of the business, recent auctions indicate quite the opposite of doom and gloom. RM Sotheby's will sell almost $1 billion in cars this year, about the same as 2024, says Rob Myers, the chairman and chief executive officer of the RM Group of Companies. He's off to a blistering start. On Feb. 1, at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, RM Sotheby's sold a 1954 Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Streamliner for $53 days later, at the Retromobile auto show in Paris, it sold a 1965 Ferrari 250 LM for $36 million. On Feb. 27 it sold a 1966 Ford GT40 Mk II for $13.2 million, one of 86 cars that totaled $74.4 million during two days of sales at the company's ModaMiami automotive festival in Coral Gables, Florida. In April it will sell two Fiats and one Lancia once owned by the Italian industrialist and style icon Gianni Agnelli. Myers, a Canadian entrepreneur with a reputation for being as shrewd as he is mercurial, has earned his current position in the industry with his relentless drive at the company he founded as RM Auto Restoration in 1976. Sotheby's took a minority stake in 2015 and a majority in 2022; offices now span almost a dozen cities including Dubai, London and Los Angeles.

Retromobile 2025 Photo Gallery

Retromobile is the greatest gathering of French cars, car art, racing memorabilia, car parts, and literature in the world. It's like Hershey, Monaco and the Pebble Beach concours but all in French. Held every year in Paris, the 49th Retromobile just wrapped up Sunday, with thousands of satisfied Francophiles coursing through the gates. Retromobile announced last year that it would come to the US in 2025, though exactly where and when is not out yet. The show opened with dancing. Organizers explained the Citroën DS exhibit: "This year, for our exhibition's 49th anniversary, we decided to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Citroën DS in an original if not slightly unusual way. Through its place in automotive history, this vehicle called for a stroke of folly. Under our partnership with DS Automobiles, we wanted to shine a light on a previously less-publicized episode in the career of the DS. "In 1959, Claude Puech, the French brand's adman, dreamt up a promotional campaign showcasing the benefits of the car's hydropneumatic suspension, replacing the wheels with four inflated balls. At Retromobile, we made our slightly eccentric dream come true by not only making it this year's key visual and giving it center stage, but also by recreating it. Starting from a car wreck, GARAC—the automotive professions academy—has conducted its mission with enthusiasm and determination. "Since September last year, 30 young students from the training college, supervised by the teaching staff, have taken turns during the week and even at weekends to give a new lease of life to the DS Balloons in time for the show. But that's not all, because since one stroke of folly often provokes another, we had to give this model a worthy backdrop of the cause. This is what brought us to strike a deal with Régis Mathieu, the founder of the chandelier company bearing his name. Deservedly renowned for his know-how, this 'magician of light' offers you a visiting experience the like of which has never been seen before at an exhibition." Jean-Claude Olivier (28 February 1945 – 12 January 2013), often referred to simply as "JCO," was a French motorcycle racer and president of Yamaha Motor France SA from 1992 to 2010. He helped launch the careers of many famous French riders including Stéphane Peterhansel. He was a veteran of nine editions of the Dakar Rally, placing second in the motorcycle category in 1985. Olivier was president of Yamaha Motor France SA until he retired in 2010. Renault Wants to Break Records with an Electric Vehicle Streamliner

The Renault Filante Record 2025 is a battery-electric streamliner the company is using to develop new technologies. This wild machine uses an 87-kWh battery pack, which has the same capacity as the Scenic E-Tech SUV. The Filante Record 2025 streamliner takes inspiration from the 40 CV Des Records from 1925-26, Nervasport Des Records from 1934, and Etoile Filante from 1956. Renault is looking at its past to help shape its future. The French carmaker is gearing up to show off its latest concept car, the Filante Record 2025, at the upcoming Retromobile motor show in Paris, France, in February. This wild concept takes inspiration from historic Renault machines of yore to help create a testbed for the future. This battery-electric streamliner uses 87 kWh worth of battery for motivation. Now, Renault hasn't mentioned the motor array, yet, but did note this battery capacity is the same as its Scenic E-Tech SUV. This battery is supplied by Ampere and uses cells that are directly integrated into the pack without intermediate modules. According to Renault, this battery shaves weight and is only responsible for 1,322 pounds of the 2,205-pound curb weight. If you're scratching your head about that number, this streamliner uses lightweight materials throughout to help keep gravity at bay. The chassis uses aluminum, carbon, and steel but has been designed in a way to reduce mass while maintaining strength. Three-dimensional printed aluminum was also used to more easily create complex structures. Obviously, another point of weight savings is the cockpit. This single-seater is predictably narrow, which the company notes made battery packaging difficult. Renault says the Filante Record 2025 is only 1.71 meters wide, or 5.6 feet. Steer- and brake-by-wire systems work to further lower the curb weight, and reduce componentry. These systems also open up engineering possibilities that would otherwise have to be packaged around mechanical connections. This narrow shell lets the Filante Record 2025 better slice through the air. As you can tell from the images above, the engineering team at Renault worked on massaging the shell to work with the air through numerical simulations, but wind tunnel confirmations are coming later this year. Renault is also working with Michelin to test tires. The Filante Record 2025 sports a set of special low rolling-resistance tires to maximize range. These narrow tires limit the contact patch and help cheat surrounding air at speed. According to Renault, these tires have about a 40% lower friction coefficient than a normal passenger car tire. If you can't make it to Paris for Retromobile, you might be in luck. Assuming Renault brings some cameras around, anyway. Renault plans to make an efficiency record attempt in the first half of 2025. Do you think anything Renault learns from this concept car will make it to production? Tell us your thoughts below.
