Chaos, crisis and close calls: The bottom four had it all

Magesi FC won the Carling Knockout by beating Mamelodi Sundowns in Bloemfontein in November. Meanwhile, they finished the Betway Premiership in 13th Photo: BackpagePix Image: Backpagepix As the curtain falls on the 2024/25 DStv Premiership season, the spotlight shifts from the title chase to the turmoil at the bottom of the table. In the first part of our season review we look at four clubs faced humiliation, heartbreak and hard lessons in survival — or in Royal AM's case, expulsion. From chaotic boardrooms to sacked managers and historic cup wins, here's how it all fell apart at the bottom of the Betway Premiership Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ 16th | ROYAL AM Royally messed up the standing of the league Royal AM were a disgrace to top-flight football. Their season was marred by administrative ineptitude, culminating in their expulsion — and leaving the PSL with egg on their face. What should have been a sporting story turned into a legal circus, largely due to club president Shauwn Mkhize's failure to meet her duties as a law-abiding citizen. This opened the door for SARS to pursue liquidation proceedings. The PSL's delayed response only worsened matters. Royal AM had consistently shown disregard for the league's statutes, governance, and ethics. Their mere participation this season disrupted fixtures and undermined the league's integrity. The good and the bad: Nothing good came from their campaign. Their chaotic involvement brought disrepute to the league and compromised the PSL's obligation to complete the season with 16 teams. Star player: None | Young Turk (U23 player): None | Player on the transfer radar: Siphiwe Cele What's to come: Thankfully, nothing. Two coaching changes didn't help. Eric Tinkler was dismissed after a string of poor results, and his replacement, Muhsin Ertugral, initially sparked hope by defeating both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs 1-0. However, the revival was short-lived, and results plummeted again, leading to Ertugral's departure as well. The good and the bad: Ertugral's brief spell included those memorable wins over the Soweto giants. But a 13-match winless run severely damaged their season. Though they picked up four points in their last two matches, a 15th-place finish is a fair reflection of their campaign. Star player: Thulani Serero | Young Turk: Jaedin Rhodes | Player on the transfer radar: Darwin Gonzalez What's to come: Their recent points haul provides hope. They possess enough quality to see off Casric Stars and Orbit College and secure their PSL status. To every supporter who stood by us, thank you! Your loyalty, patience, and belief meant everything this season. We see you. We appreciate you, Matsatsantsa. 💙#MatsatsantsaUnified #ForTheBadge — SuperSport United FC (@SuperSportFC) May 29, 2025 14th | SUPERSPORT UNITED That's the way the cookie crumbles SuperSport United clung to their top-flight status by a thread, finishing just one place above the play-off zone. This was unfamiliar territory for a side known for regular Top 8 finishes. But years of financial difficulties finally caught up with them, as even former head coach Gavin Hunt admitted it was hard to run a tight ship without resources. Amidst speculation of a sale and name change, the team suffered on the pitch. The sacking of Hunt — a man who had just marked his 1 000th league game as coach — was a brutal end to a season already laden with distress. The good and the bad: There was a glimmer of pride as players Neo Rapoo, Thato Sibiya, Thabang Mahlangu and Lazola Maku helped Amajita win the Under-20 Afcon. But domestically, it was all downhill. Star player: Siphesihle Ndlovu | Young Turk: Neo Rapoo | Player on the transfer radar: Ime Okon What's to come: Uncertain. A potential sale and rebranding as Bloemfontein Celtic looms.

PSL must do much better next season after disruptive campaign

Shauwn Mkhize Royal AM owner Shauwn Mkhize saw her club expelled from the Premiership. Photo: AYANDA NDAMANE Independent Media Image: AYANDA NDAMANE Independent Media Final Whistle Column The teething problems were there even before the season officially got underway, but the masses held their breath, hoping for everything to fall into place. But it wasn't to be. The PSL was brought about disrepute throughout the season, so much so that there'll be better expectations next season. Perhaps the fact that the majority of the fans are not rating the design of the new Premiership trophy by Nelson Makamo sums up this season. Makamo was heavily criticised for his design when the new cup was unveiled last Sunday, with naysayers linking it with the infamous hookah pipes. Next Stay Close ✕ The renowned designer tried to justify himself, saying that he got the idea for the trophy through his ancestors as he wanted to produce something iconic. But the football masses, including yours truly, are having none of that, as his instinctive design didn't align with football heritage often portrayed through silverware. Makamo, also, is just unfortunate that he has suddenly become a sacrificial lamb as some of us have been there even before the start to see the signs of a ticking bomb. The multi-billion rand Premiership was initially shaken when broadcasting giants DStv pulled out as the main sponsor of top-flight football at the 11th hour amid financial struggles. That all but forced PSL head honcho Irvin Khoza to find an immediate solution, and thanks to his impeccable leadership, it wasn't long that the product attracted interest. In the end, though, it was betting heavyweights Betway that won the bid of being the league's main sponsor, changing how some people viewed sports betting. But that wouldn't deter the overall feeling that Khoza had hit a jackpot by bringing Betway on board, given their vast financial power and growth over the years. Betway and the PSL, however, said, at the time, that they were not yet ready to reveal the championship trophy as they were still in discussion with a few top designers for expert input. In the end, it was Makamo that won the bid. The revered designer got a lot of stick from the masses after his masterpiece wasn't deemed worth it for a football competition. Royal AM brought the league into disrepute after the club's president, Shauwn Mkhize, owed money to SARS, resulting in the curator taking over assets, including the football club. And with Mkhize unable to pay the curator the sum of R40 million, that led to the curator putting up the club for sale, resulting in the no payments as the PSL also froze grants. And after no entity successfully bought Royal AM early this year, the PSL Board of Governors had no choice but to vote in favour of the expulsion of Thwihli Thwahla. It was a dark time for those who were under the payroll of the club, but not its owners and the management team, as they brought the league into disrepute from the outset. When Royal AM joined the elite league, they made a mockery of its professionalism, paying player bonuses on the pitch, fighting with fellow officials and turning stands into parties. And so their questionable deeds finally caught up with the club, but it's unfortunate that it was at the expense of the league and its stakeholders, Betway and Nedbank. And we've done it🏆 — Durban City FC (@DurbanCity_FC) May 18, 2025 Right now, there's a pending case regarding the improper registration of Sifiso Magawana by NFD log leaders Durban City, hence their automatic promotion has been put on pause. It is not the first time that the PSL have been embroiled in a promotion saga related due to improper registration, so that's a story for another day. But overall, it's been a disruptive season for the PSL in the top-flight, so expectations will be rife for things to improve significantly next season.

Investigation complete, no more arrests for attempted murder of advocate Coreth Naudé

The investigation into advocate Coreth Naudé's attempted murder is complete. Two men have been accused of the crime and no more arrests were made. The case has been postponed for the prosecution's decision. Police have completed their investigation into the attempted murder of senior advocate Coreth Naudé, who represented SARS in a tax inquiry involving controversial businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize, and no further arrests have been made. This after earlier indications that there was a possibility of more arrests. The attempted murder accused, Siyanda Emmanual Mbulwana and Mcebisi Corlen Runeyi, were back in the dock of the Durban Magistrate's Court on Wednesday after their arrest on 19 December in the Western Cape. Naudé was shot in the neck and face at the entrance of Premier Hotel Umhlanga, north of Durban, on 18 July 2024. After she was shot, she managed to drive onto the hotel premises. There she received emergency medical attention before she was rushed to the hospital. During the accused's bail application, which was unsuccessful, it was revealed that CCTV footage of the crime scene captured both of them clearly. Mbulwana was also pointed out during an identity parade, the court heard. But the accused denied committing the attempted murder and claimed they were on holiday in Durban at the time. They claimed they were mistaken for the perpetrators. At the time, the State revealed that detectives were analysing cellphone records that could lead to the arrest of two more people. But when they appeared in court on Wednesday, no one else was in the dock with them. 'Investigations are now complete in the matter. May it be adjourned for a decision from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP),' prosecutor Carlson Govender told the court on Wednesday. Magistrate Ashwin Singh postponed the case to 13 June. Mbulwana and Runeyi, both from Cape Town, are charged with conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, and possession of a semi-automatic firearm. It is alleged that they flew from Cape Town to Durban the day before the shooting. The State is armed with cellphone evidence that allegedly places them at the scene of the crime at the time that it happened, and places them where the getaway vehicle was when it was captured on CCTV footage at a fast-food establishment in the Durban CBD. In the bail application, the prosecution put on record that both accused had previous brushes with the law. The prosecution said Mbulwana was convicted of a 2016 Khayelitsha assault and had a pending 2023 case for possession of an unlicensed firearm in Kleinveli. It also emerged at the time that Runeyi had warrants of arrest for motor vehicle theft. Runeyi's criminal record also reflected four withdrawn cases for possession of housebreaking equipment, public violence, and robbery.

Royal AM's salary disclosure: FUSA concerned MaMkhize made players 'a laughing stock'

Shauwn Mkhize FILE - Royal AM Shauwn Mkhize hasn't given up the fight to save het football club. "As FUSA, we believe it is not appropriate to expose players' salaries in this manner. This is especially concerning when some of those players are unemployed and actively seeking jobs," FUSA's Taelo Motloung told Kickoff . All these players were paid on February 14 this year and Mkhize asked the court to hear the case on May 20, just before the conclusion of the league season. In an urgent court order in the Joburg High Court to declare the expulsion unlawful, the KwaZulu-Natal businesswoman attached proof of payment of the players' income , with the word 'salary' reflecting as a reference on each and every transaction, which gives the amount of money the players were earning at the club. The non-payment of salaries and financial sustainability of the club were some of the arguments used by the PSL when they eventually expelled the club after the SARS curator failed to find a buyer for the club Mkhize revealed her players' salaries in the latest effort to overturn their expulsion from the Premier Soccer League (PSL) , after South African Revenue Service (SARS) had put the club under curatorship because of an outstanding R40 million tax bill. The Footballers Union of South Africa (FUSA) has slammed Royal AM boss Shauwn 'MaMkhize' Mkhize for revealing the club's players' salaries. "By disclosing their salaries, she risks scaring away other clubs from signing them. Clubs may assume they cannot afford such salaries, which compounds the issue. "As a club owner, such actions are unacceptable, unless there is a minimum wage regulation in our football. If that were the case, what she did would not be a problem. However, the manner in which she did it suggests her intent was to deter other clubs and potential suitors, or to publicly expose the players. "While FUSA advocates for transparency and fair treatment of our members, we understand that players may feel embarrassed by this revelation, though not to the extent of seeking counseling. In overseas leagues, players' salaries are not kept secret, and since they are public figures, people should be aware of what professionalism in football entails," he adds. According to the papers, veteran defender Thabo Matlaba was Royal AM's highest-paid player, taking home R121,000. A player known as Mnguni S was the lowest-paid player with a net pay of R2,000. In terms of the law, as of March 1, 2024, the minimum wage in South Africa is R27.58 per hour, or R4,779.38 per month for a 40-hour work week. However, there is no prescribed minimum wage agreement for professional footballers in the Betway Premiership and the second-tier ABC Motsepe League. Motloung says Mkhize has made her players 'a laughing stock' after revealing their salaries. "This is the kind of information that should be exposed. It would not be inappropriate to disclose players' salaries if we had a minimum wage in this country,' he said. 'For instance, if the Motsepe Foundation Championship had a minimum wage of R20 000 or R30 000, and the PSL had a minimum wage of R50,000, we wouldn't criticise MaMkhize's actions. "But because there is no minimum wage, players are made to look foolish in the eyes of jealous neighbours and relatives, who might say: 'Look, these people are bragging about their sons who only earn R5 000 a month.'" "In this case, I believe it should be the player who reveals their salary, not the chairman. MaMkhize has made her players a laughing stock. What has she accomplished by doing this?" @JohnGoliath82

Royal AM's Shauwn 'MaMkhize' Mkhize reveals players' salaries in last stand against PSL

FILE - Royal AM owner Shauwn Mkhize is trying to overturn the Premier Soccer League's decision to expel the club. Royal AM boss Shauwn 'MaMkhize' Mkhize has revealed her players salaries to prove that they did indeed receive their salaries despite the club going into administration which led to their expulsion from the Premier Soccer League (PSL). The South African Revenue Service (SARS) seizes control of a number of owner Mkhize's assets in November, including the football club, allegedly due to the businesswoman owing the tax collector around R40 million. In January, Royal AM's players went on strike and didn't return from the festive break after the non-payment of December salaries. Their match against Chippa United on January 11 was postponed. And the club was then provisionally suspended and their fixtures postponed. Mkhize and the club then released a statement surrounding the matter of Sars and the unpaid December salaries, saying: 'We acknowledge the hardship this has caused and extend our heartfelt apologies to those impacted, including their families. 'The club's management team, led by our CEO and General Manager, has been working diligently with the curator to secure the necessary permissions to release funds for salary payments. It has always been the ethos of Royal AM to prioritise the wellbeing of our personnel, and we remain dedicated to upholding that principle despite the current challenges.'
