'We don't want Royal AM': Supporters of MaMkhize's new club
A group of football supporters of Mbabane Highlanders FC – now renamed Mbabane Highlanders AM FC – are rejecting the new position of power given to MaMkhize, real name Shauwn Mkhize. Last week, the businesswoman was announced as president of the eSwatini club. She has since called for 'unity' among fans and expressed her desire for the club to relive its 'glory days.' This news comes months after SARS seized her South African team, Royal AM, to pay off her R40 million debt. The club was later expelled from the PSL. During her first address as Mbabalane Highlanders AM FC on Sunday, 20 July, the club revealed that MaMkhize had 'called for unity and urged all stakeholders to play their part in restoring the club to its former glory'. It added: 'She emphasized the importance of protecting the club's image, encouraging everyone to refrain from public commentary that could hinder efforts to build a strong and respected brand'. 'Most significantly, she pledged her full commitment to making Mbabane Highlanders AM the leading football club in the country—on and off the pitch'. Last week, the eSwatini club confirmed that MaMkhize had signed a three-year presidency deal as the club's president. In a video clip, MaMkhize revealed that she had added a 'touch of gold' and her signature 'AM', and that players of the eSwatini club would now wear black and gold. 'New look. Same spirit. 🖤💛 Mbabane Highlanders AM F.C. is now draped in black and gold', a Facebook post from the club read. MaMkhize is the new president of Mbabane Highlanders. Images via Instagram: @kwa_mammkhize Although many Mbabane Highlanders AM FC fans have vowed to support MaMkhize as president of the club, others are wary and even concerned about her involvement. On its official Facebook account, many have rejected the new leadership and its link to the now-defunct SA club. Gcin'muzi Hlatshwayo: 'We are not Royal AM!' Imagine Sci-fi Mzanzi: 'This is disrespectful to this old club.' Doni Dlamini: 'Highlanders is dead now!' Denis De Sousa: 'Royal AM 2.0?'

She added she remains fully committed to Royal AM – at least for now. "Personally, I'm still a card-carrying member of Royal AM, so I will become a Highlanders AM supporter once I receive their supporters' card. Interest from Eswatini is already pouring in. "I have been receiving many calls from Highlanders AM supporters in Eswatini, inviting me to join them. They want me to be part of their fanbase. Yesterday, I dominated all the front pages in Eswatini. And while Highlanders is a much larger club in that region, Mama Joy insists her loyalty is still tied to the original team – until told otherwise. "Highlanders is a huge team in Eswatini, with many more supporters compared to Royal AM, and they have qualified for the top eight. However, I am waiting for the Royal AM management to tell me what our next steps will be." Last week, the Durban businesswoman insisted on Robert Marawa's show on 947 that she did not buy the Eswatini club after she was appointed as their president. After her unveiling as their new president, she immediately rebranded the club Mbabane Highlanders AM. Mbabane Highlanders are the most successful team in Eswatini with 13 league titles to their name. However, they haven't been champions since 2001. In April, the PSL voted to kick MaMkhize's Royal AM out of the league. Royal AM had been placed under auction to recoup some of the R40 million that Mkhize owed to SARS. After an extensive bidding process, Durban businessman Roy Moodley appeared to have won the race to purchase the club, but after he could not cough up the funds, the sale collapsed, and the league decided to kick the club out. Picture:for BET Businesswoman and reality TV personality Shauwn 'MaMkhize' Mkhize has opened up about the emotional toll of losing her football club, Royal AM. Speaking to Andile Ncube on Metro FM this week, MaMkhize said she lost more than just money. 'I've lost my soul. I think my soul and my heart were invested in that brand. Money – put it aside. We work, we make money every day, but I've lost my soul. I think that was my baby.' She added that her greatest concern is for the many lives that depended on the club. 'Sometimes when you do something, you must look at the people and the lives of the people that you are affecting. There were people who depended on Royal AM. 'And what hurts me the most is not the money. It's about the families that I believe were affected by something that could have been controlled.' According to News24, Royal AM and 10 of MaMkhize's 14 luxury vehicles were sold at auction for R8.2 million. She's back! MaMkhize returns as president of Mbabane Highlanders AM FC
After weathering the storm of a SARS setback, businesswoman, philanthropist, and football enthusiast Shauwn 'MaMkhize' Mkhize is back in the spotlight, stronger than ever, and this time, she's taking the helm at Mbabane Highlanders FC as its new president. She entered into a three-year contract to oversee the leadership of the club. Her appointment comes after her tumultuous exit from Royal AM FC (Pty) Ltd, which faced financial setbacks, including a R40 million tax debt with South African Revenue Services (SARS), and eventual expulsion from the Premier Soccer League. Read more | MaMkhize speaks out on unpaid salaries, confirms Royal AM is under curatorship In March, Royal AM FC (Pty) Ltd was put up for sale after the SARS curator, Jaco Venter, issued a public bid notice announcing that the club is to be auctioned to recoup the R40 million MaMkhize owed in tax. As part of her vision, the club has been rebranded as Mbabane Highlanders AM Football Club, incorporating her son Andile Mpisane's 'AM' trademark. The new club crest blends the original black and white colours with gold elements from Royal AM FC. On Sunday, July 13, 2025, she took to her Instagram to announce the news via a compilation video showing her, her sister, her son - Andile Mpisane, his wife - Tamia Mpisane, and other members all dressed in all black clothes attending the ceremony and celebrating their comeback with MaMkhize also writing on her stories 'Bounce back, bounce back.' Mbabane Highlanders AM are the most successful team in Eswatini, with 13 Swazi Premier League titles & 9 Swazi Cups 🎥𝐄𝐬𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐠 — Austin Ditlhobolo (@A_B_Ditlhobolo) July 12, 2025 And speaking at the ceremony on Saturday, Mkhize said: 'Mbabane Highlanders is a symbol of pride, strength and tradition. And today marks a new chapter, not a takeover but a partnership. A merging of histories between Eswatini and South Africa, rooted in shared ambition and excellence. 'To the patrons, my heartfelt thanks for your trust. To the fans, you are the soul of this club. Together, we will raise the standard, grow our talent and bring this club the success it deserves. My promise is simple: I will lead with integrity, vision and heart. We're not here to participate; we're here to elevate." Mbabane Highlanders are the most successful team in Eswatini with 13 league titles to their name. However, they haven't been champions since 2001. It remains to be seen how involved Mpisane will be with the new club. At Royal AM, another club named in his honour, he acted as chairman and player. Due to the transfer ban the club was handed at the beginning of last season, he featured in the first team often. During their game against the mighty Kaizer Chiefs towards the end of last year, Mpisane struggled to make an impact as the Soweto giants ran up a 2–0 lead before half-time. When Mpisane was taken off after the break, Royal AM started to find their groove, and they would eventually earn an encouraging 2-all draw. That game summed up much of Mpisane's stint at Royal AM – controversial, unpredictable, and always under the spotlight. As the 'AM' era begins in Eswatini, all eyes will be on whether the new name brings the kind of results to match its bold ambitions.
