Ex-boyfriend of Kendrapara girl arrested
Kendrapara: The ex-boyfriend of the 19-year-old woman, who died allegedly by setting herself on fire in Kendrapara district, was arrested on Sunday on charges of abetment of suicide and sexual harassment, police said. The woman's charred body was found on the staircase of her house on August 6, following which her father alleged that her ex-boyfriend shared their intimate videos online, which forced her to take her life. The woman broke up with the accused, Pramod Behera, following which he started threatening to make public their intimate videos. As he sent the videos to different persons, including the woman's father, she took her life, police said. The woman's family had also alleged that she sought the police's help regarding the matter, but no action was taken. The ex-boyfriend was booked under BNS sections 296 (obscene act), 75 (sexual harassment), 78 (stalking) and 108 (abetment of suicide), and sections 66-E and 67-A of the IT Act, Kendrapara SP Siddharth Kataria told reporters. 'There are at least 60 obscene videos in the mobile phone of the accused,' he said. 'The accused had sent one of the videos to the mobile phone of the deceased woman's father on July 17. He has also sent such videos to five-six other persons. He had sent a message to the deceased at 7.34 am on August 6, following which she died. He had also called the victim on August 5,' the SP said. He said the investigators were now waiting for the post-mortem examination reports. Meanwhile, the accused's father threatened that he would also die by setting himself on fire outside the police station if his son was not released. 'I am a poor man because of which justice is denied to me. My son is innocent,' he claimed. The accused's mother and sister admitted that he had a relationship with the victim, but denied that he blackmailed her. They alleged that the woman's father had set his daughter on fire in a case of 'honour killing'. Based on the allegation, police have interrogated the victim's father and brother, besides speaking to her mother. The self-immolation by the female college student had triggered Statewide furore as it came close on the heels two such incidents. While a 20-year-old female student of FM College in Balasore immolated herself on the college campus on July 12 and died two days later while undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, another 15-year-old girl from Balanga in Puri district also died from burn injuries on August 2.

Police bring ex-BF for questioning in college girl's death
Kendrapada: Police in Kendrapada district on Friday night brought a 25-year-old man from Chennai for questioning in connection with the death of the 20-year-old college student, who allegedly self-immolated on Wednesday. The father of the deceased had alleged that his daughter was in a relationship with the man for two years and they had broken up six months ago. The father had also claimed that her ex-boyfriend was threatening to leak her intimate photos and videos online, which forced her daughter to set herself ablaze. The charred remains of the girl were cremated on Thursday night. Parents of the ex-boyfriend have accused the girl's family of being responsible for her death. "Our son wanted to marry her, but her parents opposed it due to our financial status. We believe this is a case of 'honour killing'. Parents of the girl are trying to portray it as a suicide. Our son is innocent and never blackmailed her," claimed his mother. Police are trying to ascertain whether the girl died by suicide or she was murdered. SP (Kendrapada), Siddharth Kataria, said, "While initial findings suggest self-immolation, we are exploring all possibilities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like We Have No Words For Dog The Bounty Hunter's Transformation Cash Roadster Undo Our team is examining various angles, including the girl's personal life and her mobile phone call records. Girl sets self ‘ablaze', dad blames cop inaction against ex-BF for her death
Kendrapada: A 20-year-old college student in the district allegedly set herself on fire on Wednesday after her former boyfriend (24) apparently threatened to leak their intimate photos and videos on social media following their breakup. The girl, a final-year political science student, was found dead at home by her father (60), who has blamed police inaction for the tragedy. According to him, when they tried to file a complaint against the former boyfriend, police officers advised them to block his number rather than taking action against him. "Around six months back, my daughter and I had gone to Pattamundai (rural) police station to lodge an FIR against her ex-boyfriend as he had threatened to leak her private photos and videos on social media platforms. But police officers did not take necessary steps to file a case and advised us to block his mobile number instead. Due to gross negligence of the police, my daughter was forced to end her life," the girl's father alleged. He also claimed that his daughter had been living in fear for six months due to threats from her former boyfriend, with whom she had been in a relationship for two years. The incident comes days after a college student in Balasore set herself on fire over alleged sexual harassment by her department head and supposed inaction by the college authorities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas Prices In Dubai Might Be More Affordable Than You Think Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo Since that incident on July 12, Odisha has witnessed at least four such self-immolation cases. In response to the father's allegation, superintendent of police Siddharth Kataria assured a thorough and impartial investigation. "Every aspect of the incident will be thoroughly probed, and whosoever is found guilty will face action as per law," Kataria said. He emphasized that police personnel would be held accountable if it is found they have been negligent. A forensic team has been deployed to gather evidence, and a case has been filed under Sections 108 (abetment to suicide) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of BNS. However, no arrests have been made yet. Opposition leaders from BJD, Congress and Left parties criticised the police for their handling of the case and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused boyfriend. Two platoons of police have been deployed in the village to maintain law and order as investigation continues. The girl's body has been sent for autopsy, with authorities awaiting the postmortem report to determine the exact cause of death.

Charred body of 20-year-old college girl found at her home in Odisha
The charred body of a 20-year-old college girl was found in her house in Kendrapara district of Odisha on Wednesday (August 6, 2025). When the parents of the girl returned from hospital, they found smoke billowing from their house locked from inside. After they broke open the door, they found the girl charred. The victim was a final year undergraduate student. The girl's father alleged that she had been in a relationship with a youth for the past two years and had taken her own life after being blackmailed by her ex-boyfriend, with whom she had broken up six months ago. The matter took a controversial turn when the girl's father alleged that the Pattamundai Rural Police Station had discouraged his daughter from filing a complaint against the boy for blackmail. Villagers claimed that timely police intervention could have prevented the mental distress that ultimately drove her to take such an extreme step. Kendrapada Superintendent of Police Siddharth Kataria, who visited the house where girl's body was found, said the issue of alleged suicide and negligence by the local police would be probed thoroughly. Police filed a case under Sections 108 (abetment to suicide) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) under the BNS. However, no suicide note was recovered. Police said further clarity would come after the postmortem report was received.
