Truck driver and assistant killed in highway crash
Fatal wreck: The damaged vehicles seen at the crash site at KM81.9 of the of the Ayer Hitam-Batu Pahat southbound stretch along the North-South Expressway. — Bernama BATU PAHAT: A lorry driver and his assistant were killed instantly in a three-vehicle collision along the North-South Expressway near here on Thursday. Batu Pahat OCPD Asst Comm Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the accident occurred at KM81.9 of the Ayer Hitam-Batu Pahat southbound stretch at about 8.30am. 'A lorry transporting electronic goods crashed into the rear of another lorry carrying wood, which then collided with an oil tanker,' he said in a statement. The impact of the crash caused fatal injuries to the driver and his assistant, who were pronounced dead at the scene by a medical officer from the Yong Peng health clinic. They were identified as R. Pubalan, 45, from Sungai Petani, Kedah, and 35-year-old assistant R. Sivasanthiran from Bedong, Kedah. The 37-year-old driver of the wood-laden lorry sustained only minor injuries and was taken to Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital. The oil tanker driver, aged 42, was unharmed. The case is being probed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.

Batu Pahat district police chief Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the victims of the 8.30am accident were R Pubalan, 45, and his assistant R Sivasanthiran, 35. In a statement, Shahrulanuar said initial investigations found that the crash occurred when the lorry, which was carrying electronic goods, crashed into the back of a timber trailer. 'As a result of the collision, the timber lorry went on to crash into an oil tanker. 'The two victims, who suffered serious head, chest and leg injuries, were confirmed dead at the scene. 'The driver of the timber lorry, who sustained minor leg and chest injuries, was taken to Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital in Batu Pahat. The driver of the oil tanker was not injured,' he said. The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Members of the public who witnessed the incident are urged to come forward to any nearby police station.

Man remanded after allegedly stabbing uncle in row over gossip
BATU PAHAT: A 35-year-old man has been remanded for three days after allegedly stabbing his uncle five times with a kitchen knife following a heated argument. According to the report lodged, the incident occurred at the man's home in Semerah when his 52-year-old uncle confronted him, accusing him of badmouthing the latter. The confrontation took place in the kitchen, where the suspect, a grass cutter, was with his younger brother preparing and cutting vegetables. The situation escalated when the uncle allegedly grabbed a mortar to hit the suspect. In response, the man is said to have grabbed a knife and stabbed his uncle in the shoulder and left wrist. The victim sustained five stab wounds and was rushed to Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment and reported to be in stable condition. The suspect's younger brother reportedly attempted to break up the fight. The suspect claimed he acted in self-defence, fearing he would be attacked with the mortar. He was brought before the magistrates' court here today and remanded for three days by Magistrate Nurasidah A. Rahman for investigation under Section 324 of the Penal Code. The offence is non-bailable and carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years, a fine, whipping, or any combination of the three, upon conviction.
