Catalytic Converters Are Stolen So Often This Mechanic Made a Rap PSA About It. Here's the Real Reason Why They're So Lucrative
Catalytic converters are commonly stolen. A viral post by a mechanic highlights the issue. In a Facebook post , automotive repair shop Doctor Auto shares a rap about catalytic converters. The post has generated over 3.1 million views as of this writing. In the post, mechanic Derek McDaniel raps over a video revealing a very clogged catalytic converter. The beat is simple, and the bars are lethal. 'I don't lie, I don't murder. But I might steal your catalytic converter. When you leave it unattended in the parking lot, I got a sawzall blade and it's mighty hot,' the mechanic raps. Doctor Auto told Motor1 , 'It was a clogged Catalytic Converter on a F150 5.4L. When we took it off, we noticed that some catalyst matter fell out of it. We pulled out my camera and recorded.' This rap parody of stealing catalytic converters had viewers howling for more, and others chiming in on the trend to steal these. 'My guy you snapped. I need a full song,' one person said. 'Always wanted to steal one,' another admitted. 'You should finish the song, it's good so far,' a third replied. What Are Catalytic Converters? A catalytic converter is a part of your car's exhaust system that converts harmful engine exhaust pollutants into something less harmful to the environment through chemical reactions, J.D Power reports. This car part will turn pollutants like carbon monoxide into less harmful substances like nitrogen and water vapor. This part became popular in the mid-1970s when the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulated vehicle emissions tests. There are three types of catalytic converters: Two-way converters, three-way converters, and diesel oxidation catalysts. Catalytic converters are now standard in cars. Why Are Catalytic Converters Stolen So Often? While the catalytic converter is known for reducing toxins and vehicle emissions, this car part has become a target for thieves, AAA shares. Thieves target this car part because it's valuable. According to Catalytic Converter Recycling , catalytic converters require three metals with more value than gold. The three metals included in catalytic converters are platinum, palladium, and rhodium. These expensive metals can be recycled easily and broken down to be sold as scraps. Replacing a catalytic converter can put a dent in the wallet and cost up to $2,500 without labor, Autozone reports. With the valuable metal components of platinum, palladium, and rhodium, thieves can turn a nice profit stealing catalytic converters. Scrap recyclers will usually pay $100 or so for each one because they can refine the metal if needed, one Reddit user said. Catalytic converters are an easy part to steal because they're outside the vehicle. With just a sawzall, a thief can quickly nab one. Ways to Prevent Catalytic Converter Theft Preventive measures can be taken to decrease the chance of your catalytic converter getting stolen. SUVs, trucks, and hybrids have valuable catalytic converters that are easily removable. According to Allstate Car Insurance , here are five ways to prevent catalytic converter theft: Know if your car is a likely target Park in well-lit areas Install an anti-theft device Install motion-sensitive lights and cameras in your parking area Paint your catalytic converter to deter buyers You can also etch your license plate number or VIN onto the catalytic converter. This can potentially alert a scrap dealer that the part was stolen and make it easier to find the owner. Additionally, parking in well-lit areas is always a best practice. So is regularly relocating your parking spot. Ford's Recall Affects Almost Every Cool Car They Make, and There's No Fix Yet
If you've recently bought one of Ford's best-selling vehicles, like the wildly popular Bronco, the workhorse F-150, or the family-hauling Explorer, the company has some unsettling news for you. Ford is recalling a staggering 850,318 of its most iconic models worldwide, including 844,098 in the U.S. alone, from the 2021-2023 model years due to a defect that can cause the engine to suddenly stall while driving. But the real kicker in this massive safety recall isn't just the danger of your engine cutting out on the highway. It's that Ford has admitted it doesn't have a solution yet, and has ordered its dealers to immediately stop selling or even demonstrating the affected vehicles. 'The remedy is under development,' the company plainly states in several documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). According to an urgent 'DELIVERY HOLD' notice sent on July 8 to all U.S. dealers, the problem lies with a faulty low-pressure fuel pump that can fail unexpectedly. The consequence is blunt and dangerous: 'An engine stall while driving increases the risk of a crash.' The notice warns dealers they could face civil penalties of up to $27,168 per vehicle if they deliver an unremedied car. The list of affected vehicles, now frozen on dealership lots, reads like a who's who of Ford's modern lineup: For current owners, the new documents provide critical information about what to watch for. Ford says that before a total failure, a driver might experience poor engine performance (like misfiring or running rough), a check engine light, or a sudden reduction in engine power. The failure is reportedly more likely to occur in 'warm weather' or when the vehicle has a low level of fuel. For the nearly one million owners of these vehicles, the path forward is frustratingly unclear. Ford plans to send out initial notification letters to owners around July 14, 2025, to inform them of the safety risk. However, a second letter will have to be sent once an actual fix is engineered and available. This leaves hundreds of thousands of drivers in a state of limbo, aware that their vehicle has a potentially critical flaw but with no immediate action to take. This recall represents a significant blow to the automaker, highlighting a critical failure in a component used across its most profitable and popular vehicles. For now, concerned owners can contact Ford's customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or visit the NHTSA website for updates, but the only real answer they're looking for—how to fix it—is one Ford can't yet provide.

Ford Just Issued Another Massive Recall. And It Doesn't Even Have a Fix Yet
Ford Motor Company is recalling 850,318 vehicles due to a potential issue with the fuel pump. The recall affects a range of Ford and Lincoln models from the 2021-2023 model years. The vehicles could suffer from a low-pressure fuel pump failure, which could starve the engine of gas and cause it to stall. According to the recall report , internal contamination of the low-pressure fuel pump jet could lead to a loss of flow and pressure, increasing the "sensitivity to vapor lock." Owners may experience reduced power or poor engine performance, like misfiring or rough running, before the fuel pump fails. The recall affects some of Ford's most popular and iconic models, like the Bronco , Explorer , Mustang , and F-150 , with the popular pickup accounting for more than half of the batch. It also includes the Super Duty , the Expedition , the Lincoln Aviator , and the Lincoln Navigator . Ford first learned of a potential problem in September 2022 when its Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG) initiated an investigation. The automaker had seen an increase in the number of warranty claims related to the fuel delivery modules on certain 2021-2022 vehicles. According to the recall notice, these vehicles had a "specific variant of low-pressure fuel pump and jet pump." Here's the full list: Year/Model Number Affected 2021-2023 Ford Bronco 109,881 2022-2022 Ford Expedition 32,470 2021-2023 Ford Explorer 76,089 2021-2023 Ford F-150 455,261 2021-2022 Ford Mustang 24,790 2021-2023 Ford Super Duty 113,396 2021-2023 Lincoln Aviator 23,073 2021-2022 Lincoln Navigator 14,358 Ford's teardown analysis uncovered contamination blocking the jet pump orifices; however, the automaker couldn't confirm the source. The number of warranty claims declined after the supplier "implemented several corrective actions from December 2021 through September 2022" to reduce contamination. In July 2023, Ford's CCRG closed its investigation after confirming the supplier corrected the issue. However, a year later, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began to evaluate six consumer complaints about their 2021 Broncos losing power. The CCRG opened a new investigation in April 2025 and discovered in May that warranty claims increased in the warm-weather states and during the summer months. Then, last month, Ford found the problem. The supplier made changes to the jet pump production process in July 2021 that resulted in lower clearances. As of June 6, there have been 1,860 warranty claims, 57 customer service reports, and 28 field reports related to the issue. However, the automaker is unaware of any accidents or injuries caused by the problem. Ford does not have a remedy yet for the affected vehicles. It's "under development," according to the recall report. Once it has a fix, it'll notify owners by mail, instructing them to take their vehicle to a dealer for repair. Owners should begin receiving initial notices next week.
