Marathi row: Mumbai pizza delivery boy apologises at MNS office; netizens not convinced, ‘Not my Maharashtra'

Mint15-05-2025

Remember the Domino's Pizza delivery boy who was allegedly harassed in Mumbai for not speaking Marathi? A couple reportedly refused to pay him unless he spoke Marathi. Rohit Lavare recorded the incident, and the video went viral on social media. Now, the boy has apologised.
The incident happened on May 12 at the Sai Radhe building in Mumbai's Bhandup area. While many stood by the delivery boy, the incident apparently reached a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) office.
A new video shows the pizza delivery boy apologising for 'falsely spreading' the Marathi imposition story.
'I did not do this intentionally. I sent it to a Domino's group, and it became viral. Ma'am did make the payment. Let's not have any more misunderstandings. Please make the video viral,' he says as multiple mobile phones record his statement.
Then, an MNS leader asks him to apologise to the woman involved in the alleged incident. And, he does.
'Ma'am bahot acchi hai, bhai. Please aisa mat karo. (Ma'am is very nice. Please don't do this),' he tells the camera.
'That's what you get when you don't respect our culture and language!' wrote the user who posted the video on X (formerly Twitter) while appreciating MNS' efforts.
The delivery boy also clarifies that the man and the woman in the video are not a couple. They're mother and son.
Another MNS worker then reminds him of saying the 'Marathi' thing. The delivery boy continues, 'Main Marathi bolunga bhi. Aur seekhunga bhi. (I'll learn Marathi and speak it, too) Jai Hind. Jai Maharashtra.'
Social media is, however, not convinced. Many users claim that the apology seems forced.
'No wonder they did not go to the police to make their complaint but were smart enough with the political party. Makes me wonder what is the real truth about this issue,' commented one user.
Another one asked, 'Why is she ordering Italian food? Order Maharashtrian food. Will these people have the audacity to impose the language on someone who's equal in status? They just oppress people like delivery boys, security guards. So shameful.'
'Kanpati pe gun rakh ke koi bhi kuch bhi bulva sakta hai!!! (Anyone can be forced to say anything by putting a gun to someone's head).
Maharashtra is transforming to Hooliganism,' came from another.
'This is not my Maharashtra. That's the reason why this political party drawn zero in the last election. Only way to stay relevant they do this stupidity,' wrote a Reddit user.

BJP replying to Rahul's Maharashtra poll questions instead of EC confirms match-fixing: Chennithala

BJP leaders replying to Rahul Gandhi's questions on the 2024 Maharashtra polls instead of the Election Commission of India confirms the "match-fixing" charge, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala said on Sunday (June 8, 2025). Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' article, with facts and figures to refute Mr. Gandhi's claims, was published in The Indian Express and the Marathi daily Loksatta during the day. Earlier, top BJP leaders, including party chief J.P. Nadda, had slammed Mr. Gandhi for casting aspersions on the country's electoral process. "BJP leaders are replying on behalf of the Election Commission, which is concerning. It only confirms that match-fixing did take place. Rahul Gandhi, in his detailed article, has exposed how the Maharashtra assembly elections were marred by fraud, manipulation, and a systematic violation of the people's mandate, amounting to a brutal assault on democracy," Mr. Chennithala said in a statement. The ECI must respond to serious questions raised by Mr. Gandhi, who has exposed a "disturbing truth", Mr. Chennithala said while asserting the happenings related to the state polls were not accidental but a meticulously-planned operation. "Maharashtra, once a beacon of democratic values, is now witnessing a deep erosion of those values. The Congress has been consistently following up with the Election Commission, but so far, the responses have been superficial and unsatisfactory," the AICC in charge for the state said. Mr. Chennithala said when the Chandigarh High Court ordered the release of CCTV footage in connection with the Haryana assembly polls, the Union government, with help from the EC, changed the rules and blocked that information. "Why was that done? And for whose benefit?" he asked. The Maharashtra polls involved manipulation in the voter list, large-scale bogus voting and artificial inflation of vote percentages, Chennithala alleged. "In the Lok Sabha election, Congress and its allies won a sweeping mandate. Then how could the outcome reverse so drastically within just five months? This reeks of electoral fraud," he said. The refusal to conduct a mock drill in Markadwadi (where some people sought a repoll after alleging EVM manipulation) itself is a sign that something was being hidden, he added. The BJP and EC are trying to hide the truth but the Congress will pursue it relentlessly till democratic integrity is restored, Chennithala asserted.

Political temperatures rise as Maha CM pens retort to Rahul Gandhi's 'match-fixing' claims

A fierce political row has erupted after Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi alleged "match-fixing" in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, prompting a sharp response from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who accused the Congress leader of misleading the public after his electoral defeat. Fadnavis, in an article in a Marathi daily, rebuked Gandhi's allegations, saying: "The one whom the public rejects, rejects the mandate." A day after pledging to respond to Gandhi's "article with an article", the Chief Minister stated, "If you cannot convince people, then confuse them -- this is Rahul Gandhi's policy." The Congress leader wrote an op-ed in a national daily in which he questioned the conduct of the Maharashtra elections and accused the Election Commission of dereliction of duty. The Congress and its allies have accused the Election Commission of opaque functioning and raised questions about unexplained spikes in voter turnout. Congress's Maharashtra leader Nana Patole alleged that 46 lakh additional votes were added to the voter count and questioned the legitimacy of votes counted after 5 p.m. "The Election Commission has denied access to CCTV footage and failed to provide clarity. They have participated in murdering the democratic process," Patole said, adding that the party has moved the Supreme Court seeking redress. State Congress President Harshwardhan Sapkal, speaking to IANS, said: "Why is CM Fadnavis responding when the questions are for the Election Commission? Rahul Gandhi has raised facts that deserve judicial scrutiny." Voicing similar concerns, Congress spokesperson Atul Londhe challenged the official explanation, stating, "We questioned how 67 lakh votes were added post 5 p.m. The official reply said 16 lakh. If so many votes were cast after hours, who verified them and how?" Londhe also questioned changes to the constitutional mechanism, pointing to the exclusion of the Chief Justice from the Election Commission selection panel, replaced instead by the Union Home Minister. "This overshadows the voice of the Leader of Opposition," he said. NCP-SP MP Supriya Sule said Gandhi's article stemmed from frustration at being ignored by the EC despite repeatedly raising concerns. "After Rahul Gandhi wrote an article, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis also wrote a long piece in the newspaper. In an empowered democracy, everyone has the right to express their opinion. What Rahul Gandhi wrote was because he hasn't received replies from the Election Commission for all the letters he has written so far," Sule told reporters. BJP MLA Ram Kadam defended the EC and the state government, stating that Fadnavis had presented detailed electoral data from 2009 to 2024 showing consistent increases in vote share and voter registration. "Rahul Gandhi's objections are based on incomplete knowledge. If he has proof, let him share it with the nation. But don't mislead people every time you lose. That is immature," Kadam said. JD-U leader K.C. Tyagi also weighed in, urging Gandhi to formally approach the Election Commission. "Instead of writing articles, he should meet the EC with his team and get his queries addressed," he said. In the elections held on November 20, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance -- comprising Congress, the Sharad Pawar faction of the NCP, and the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena -- won just 46 out of 288 seats. In contrast, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance swept 235 seats, with the BJP alone securing 132 -- its highest-ever tally in the state.
