Boom! Ohio State lands verbal pledge from former Penn State wide receiver commit

USA Today19-07-2025
Boom! After a series of recruiting losses, Ohio State was given some good news on Friday afternoon when four-star wide receiver Jerquaden Guilford gave his verbal pledge to wear the Scarlet and Gray.
Guilford hails from Fort Wayne, Indiana, and is ranked as the No. 50 receiver in the nation according to 247Sports composite rankings. He picked the Buckeyes over Indiana, Ole' Miss, and Michigan. Though his ranking won't pop out to anyone, Guilford has the size that Brian Hartline likes, coming in at 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds with room to grow. Originally committed to Penn State, Guilford decommitted from the Nittany Lions in late February. He caught 35 passes for 556 yards and three touchdowns during his junior year at Northrop High School.
During his live-streamed announcement, Guilford had this to say about joining OSU. "Everybody lies, but stats don't lie," Guilford said. "They prove every year that they're 'Wide Receiver U.' I'd love to be a part of it, and I am part of it."
Guilford becomes the fifth receiver commit to join the Buckeyes in the 2026 class, joining Kayden Dixon-Wyatt, Jaeden Ricketts, Brock Boyd, and Chris Henry Jr. Ohio State now has 21 total commits in its 2026 class.

Why Penn State believes Zakee Wheatley will be a game-changer in 2025

James Franklin didn't hesitate when talking about Zakee Wheatley at Big Ten Media Days. The fifth-year safety wasn't just mentioned in passing—he was highlighted as a major piece of what Penn State's defense plans to build around this season. 'The ball loves Zakee,' Franklin said. 'He's had his hand in nine takeaways in his career. We think he's going to have a phenomenal year.' That kind of trust doesn't come easy in Franklin's program. It's built over time, in the weight room, in film sessions, in practice reps—day after day. And Wheatley has put in that work. After years of development and flashes of playmaking ability, this is the year the staff expects it all to come together. Nicknamed 'The Takeaway King' by fans, Wheatley has consistently shown a knack for being in the right place at the right time. His instincts, ball skills, and awareness make him a natural disruptor. He doesn't just play defense—he flips momentum. And in big games, that matters more than anything. With some recent changes on the roster, this defense needs veteran voices. Wheatley fits that mold perfectly. He's not just a playmaker, he's a communicator. Franklin and the staff trust him to set the tone and be the anchor for a defensive backfield that's reloading, not rebuilding. That leadership quality is especially important in 2025. With games against heavy hitters like Oregon and Ohio State on the schedule, the defense can't afford miscommunication or breakdowns. Having a fifth-year player like Wheatley—who's seen it all—helps stabilize everything. But it's not just experience that sets him apart. It's his ceiling. Franklin didn't hold back when hyping up what kind of impact Wheatley can have. 'He's a ball magnet,' he said. 'The ball just finds him.' That's the kind of skill you can't coach. It's what NFL scouts look for. It's what opposing quarterbacks fear. And in a season where the margins will be razor-thin, a guy who can create extra possessions is worth his weight in gold. Wheatley is set to graduate this fall, a testament to his commitment both on and off the field. He's become a complete player—smart, physical, and always around the ball. Now, it's time for him to lead. And if Franklin's words are any indication, Penn State believes Wheatley is ready to take that next step from steady contributor to national name. So keep an eye on No. 6 this fall. Because if the Nittany Lions make another championship push, Zakee Wheatley's fingerprints will be all over it.

Three reasons why Notre Dame will make a return trip to the College Football Playoff

The Notre Dame football season is rapidly approaching, as fall camp is set to begin later this week. Following the massively successful 2024 season, the encore 2025 campaign has thrust new expectations upon the Irish. With the College Football Playoff expanding last year, it gives Notre Dame a much better chance to compete for a championship, which is exactly what we saw last fall. For the program to make a leap into elite status, they'll have to continue to make the 12-team (more in the future) tournament. There are plenty of reasons why that should happen and here are the top three why Notre Dame will make a return visit to the College Football Playoff. Roster depth It's hard to imagine this being the case after three short years with Marcus Freeman at the helm, but not only has he recruited well, he's developed the lower ranked prospects into big-time contributors. We saw last year the Irish losing multiple players on the offensive and defensive line, star cornerback Benjamin Morrison and they didn't miss a beat. Many of those players are returning to a squad that isn't as young as it was last year. With depth all over the roster, Notre Dame can afford to sustain some injuries and keep winning. Elite defense Sure, defensive coordinator Al Golden is gone and has been replaced by Chris Ash, but now that the later doesn't have to focus on running a whole team, he should return to being an elite defensive play caller. He helped Ohio State win a championship in 2014 as their DC, and could very well do the same for the Irish. Ash has NFL experience as well, which should bode well for Notre Dame. It's not just him either, as the Irish are loaded across the board with top-end talent. Marcus Freeman At this point we are just scratching the surface of what Freeman can really be, as we have seen a massive transition from his first year to now. Sure, the early season losses still rear its ugly head, but as we saw last fall, the Irish can overcome and still reach their goal. Freeman is quickly ascending up the top coaching lists, and in my eyes, he's the biggest reason why Notre Dame will make the CFP in 2025.
