BJP accuses Rahul Gandhi of displaying ‘selective outrage' over ECI remarks
The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday (August 7, 2025) accused Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi of showing 'selective outrage', stating that his allegation about 'large-scale' electoral roll fraud was a sign of 'frustration and election rage'. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said Mr. Gandhi had completely lost his 'composure in the agony of losing power'. 'The ideologically hollow Congress party is systematically attacking constitutional institutions. It cannot be ruled out that there is a larger conspiracy against India's democracy and Constitution behind this calculated deceit. After all, their family's history is also filled with the dark chapter of the 'Emergency',' he posted on X. Mr. Pradhan said by attacking the EC, Mr. Gandhi was insulting the discerning decision of the public, which was universally accepted in a democracy. 'Where was Rahul Gandhi when the EC invited every party to file complaints regarding the SIR [Special Intensive Revision] in Bihar? Neither Congress nor any party from the INDI Alliance approached the EC at that time,' he said. 'This double standard will no longer work — praising the EC when victorious and calling it biased when defeated! Rahul Gandhi needs to understand that his family's victory is not the definition of democracy. The people of Bihar are now ready to give a befitting reply to such opponents of democracy and the Constitution,' said the Union Minister. At a press conference, BJP MP and spokesperson Sambit Patra said the Congress leader was displaying 'selective outrage' as he never made such accusations with respect to the States where his party won. 'When they got 99 seats in the Lok Sabha election, the Congress celebrated all over the country. They did not allege the EC was compromised,' he said. Mr. Patra said the BJP, which remained in the Opposition for long, never resorted to the kind of indecorous language used by Mr. Gandhi. 'He threatened that if the Opposition comes to power, the EC officials would face 'serious consequences',' he said, adding that the language showed his 'frustration' and 'election rage'. 'If you think that there were irregularities in the Maharashtra polls, you should have instructed your partymen to approach the court within the prescribed time period. You did not go to court, your proxy petitioned the Bombay High Court. The court dismissed the plea terming it a gross abuse of the process of law. Then, a Constitutional Bench of High Court found no evidence of fraud or illegal voting and emphasised that the petitioner had failed to demonstrate any personal legal injury or enforceable right...,' said Mr. Patra. Referring to the EC's letter to Mr. Gandhi asking him to submit through an affidavit the relevant papers supporting the charges made on Thursday, the BJP leader said the Congress's Karnataka unit had gone to the EC on August 3. 'On August 6, the EC asked them to come on August 8. However, Mr. Gandhi held the press conference a day earlier...,' said Mr. Patra. The BJP leader said after Mr. Gandhi raised objections related to the Maharashtra election for the first time in November 2024, the EC had invited him for a discussion. However, he did not meet them. Then, taking note of his news article published on the election, it again sought a meeting, but he did not go. Responding to Mr. Gandhi's 'My word is my oath' remarks, Mr. Patra said the Congress leader's words had 'no meaning'. 'That is the reason you have to give the details in an affidavit to the EC,' he said. Questioning Mr. Gandhi's charge that the BJP used the Pulwama terror attack to reverse 'anti-incumbency', the BJP leader asked if it was an attempt to insinuate that the attack was orchestrated by India. He said the manner in which the Congress leader raised doubts about Operation Sindoor, air strikes, and the surgical strike, and targeted constitutional institutions, the people would start accusing him of being a 'traitor'. Four-term BJP MP from Bangalore Central P. C. Mohan, through a post on X, added: 'Electoral rolls are prepared as per the RP Act, 1950, and the Rules, 1960. Draft rolls (SSR 2024) were shared with Congress in Nov 2024. Not a single appeal was filed after the final publication. Now, after losing Bangalore Central, they cry vote theft at a press conference.'

Bengaluru: The opening of the new Yellow Line section of the Bengaluru metro has sparked a row between Karnataka's Congress government and the BJP and senior BJP leader Tejasvi Surya invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has called him a "boy in a hurry", accusing him of announcing the details and sending the invitation without consulting the state government. Tejasvi Surya has hit back, calling the Deputy Chief Minister "ageist' and "insensitive" and said theirs is a "politics of delay". "I am part of a young generation in India that wants reforms today -- not in some distant future," Mr Surya told NDTV in an exclusive interview. "He (Shivakumar) may have no urgency because he comes from a party that represents the politics of delay," he said. The metro, he added, is a requirement for thousands who have to spend two hours in public transport just to reach their office. "This is the situation and the Deputy Chief Minister says what is the urgency... A two-km flyover in my constituency took 8.5 years to complete. I am not okay with that," he added. The Congress, he has alleged, delayed the inauguration six times. "Recently, the seven MLAs of the Yellow Line area, two MPs, our district president, and hundreds of public members... all worked hard, protested, and demanded the inauguration be done by August 15," he said. Earlier, giving reporters a ride in the new metro line, Mr Shivakumar had said Rs 7,610 crore has been spent on the line that covers 19.5 km. "The clearances to operate this have come only on July 31. Our poor young MP who is inexperienced has been in a hurry but we can't do that. The technical clearances came only on July 31. Today is August 5 and the Prime Minister has been given time to inaugurate this on August 10," he told reporters. Mr Surya accused the Congress of trying to take credit for a project for which they had little contribution. "As soon as it was announced that the Prime Minister will inaugurate the Metro line on Aug 10, yesterday they (the Congress) started publicity tours. The work on this Metro line began in 2018 and was supposed to be completed by 2021. Some problems occurred due to Covid-19, and some due to land acquisition. Even then, neither Congress nor anyone else came forward to help," he told reporters earlier. "During the Covid-19 period, BS Yediyurappa-led BJP government was in power. Even during Covid-19, civil works happened under our (BJP) government. There were problems in calling workers, so we met former CM Yediyurappa and he released additional funds. Much work was done. Later, during former CM and BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai's tenure, we (the BJP) completed 95 per cent of the civil works. Their (Congress) government didn't even appoint a full-time Managing Director for BMRCL," Mr Surya alleged.

Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Thursday finally dropped the "atom bomb" of "proof" to substantiate his series of allegations against the Election Commission of India facilitating "vote theft" in an Assembly constituency in Karnataka. Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi, Gandhi took the reporters through an online presentation of the 2024 Lok Sabha poll data analysed by the Congress to claim that over 1 lakh votes were "stolen" in the Mahadevapura Assembly segment in the Lok Sabha constituency of Bangalore Central through five types of manipulation techniques. "For some time now, there has been suspicion among millions of Indians based on a couple of points. Anti-incumbency is something that hits every single party in every democracy. But the BJP seems to be the only party in a democratic framework that is magically immune to anti-incumbency," the Congress leader said. "There is always a reason given by media for this lack of anti-incumbency, for opinion & exit polls going way off the mark, and for huge & unexpected victory margins for BJP. And these reasons are multiple – 'Ladli Behna' scheme, Pulwama attack, etc..." he added. Citing 2024 Lok Sabha poll data, Gandhi pointed out that the BJP secured 6,58,915 votes in the Bangalore Central seat, winning with a margin of 32,707. "In the Mahadevapura assembly segment, the Congress received 1,15,586 votes, whereas the BJP garnered 2,29,632 votes. The Congress won all the Vidhan Sabhas except Mahadevapura, where the BJP swept and secured a victory margin of 1,14,046 votes. This seat significantly contributed to their election win, and the Lok Sabha result went in their favour on that seat," he said. "This discrepancy is a huge imbalance. So, we started examining the details and discovered that approximately 1,00,250 votes were stolen in the Mahadevapura assembly," he claimed. Gandhi alleged there was a theft of 1,00,250 votes in the Mahadevapura segment, with 11,965 duplicate voters, 40,009 with fake and invalid addresses, 10,452 bulk voters or single-address voters, 4,132 voters with invalid photos and 33,692 voters misusing Form 6 of new voters.
