The insidious risk in holding on to cash
Many investors carry high cash allocations because it feels safe – there is no short-term volatility. But an insidious risk lurks: Cash hampers long-term returns, risking a brutal, underfunded retirement or aged poverty.
Few investors fully consider this, but you should. Here's how and why to right-size your coffers.
Holding some cash, maybe six to 12 months' worth of expenses, is sensible. It's an emergency fund; it can help you invest better by avoiding forced securities sales at inopportune times. Or, if there is an upcoming, major expense in the next few years (think: home purchase), setting cash aside is likely wise.
Otherwise? Cap your cash.
Myriad studies show asset allocation – your mix of stocks, bonds, cash and other securities – determines most of your long-term return. Not market timing. Not stock picking. Not perceptions of 'safety'. Asset allocation is the keystone choice investors make.

Your goals, needs and time horizon – how long your assets must last to finance your goals – should largely determine your allocation. Generally, the longer your time horizon and more growth you need, the more you should have in high-returning stocks.
Maybe those taking cash flow or who can't stomach volatility hold some bonds. But cash, in most cases, should be quite minimal.
Why? Minimal returns. Since good data start about a half-century ago, the MSCI Singapore Index has annualised 8.3 per cent through 2024. Gold? 5.1 per cent. Ten-year Singaporean government bonds? 3.7 per cent. Cash? Short-term Singaporean government bills – a cash proxy – annualised the lowest, at just 1.7 per cent.
Inflation averages 2.6 per cent, which devours cash's return. If your goals require any growth, cash is highly unlikely to deliver it.
So, how much cash do you hold? What is your asset allocation? Too many investors don't know.
To size them up, start thinking in terms of asset class, not account or 'bucket'. Total all of your accounts – any brokerage account, savings or fixed deposits. Stocks, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), all of it. Put it all together.
Own funds that blend stocks and bonds? Dig into the weights. If you have S$100,000 in a 60 per cent stock, 40 per cent bond fund, chalk S$60,000 to stocks and S$40,000 to bonds.
Then subtract funds earmarked for known, near-term expenses or emergencies. Divide each category – stocks, bonds, cash and others – by the total. The resulting percentages are your allocation. What percentage is cash?
Conscious or not, your allocation may reveal an implied forecast. If you hold oodles of cash, you are saying history's lowest-returning asset class is more future-fit than historically higher-returning ones, such as stocks.
In other words, holding lots of cash is implicitly uber-bearish!
Is that intentional? If so, you need to see big negatives others don't – that markets haven't priced – to justify it. That is a huge risk – maybe the biggest one you possibly take if you need growth to finance your goals.
Many say they hold cash 'in case' stocks tumble. But what is the cost of all that cash? Usually those investors hold 'dry powder' long term, turning it into a comfy cushion.
Terrified, they don't take advantage of 'buy the dip opportunities' like early April offered. They ignore cash's performance, focusing on portfolio parts versus the whole, which is a dangerous mental error.
Big cash holdings feel good. But they hurt overall returns.
If you invested S$1,000,000 in 70 per cent Singapore-listed stocks and 30 per cent long-term Singaporean government bonds since 2000 – a cyclical stock market peak – your holdings would have grown to S$1,510,150.
Stash 20 per cent in cash, and you wound up with S$219,011 less. Cash is costly! And that is despite a big, multi-year bear market to start that stretch.
Sure, you may be thinking, that is over 25 years; surely shorter horizons bring loads more periods when stocks stink, no? Lost decades and such?
Not as much as you might think. Consider: MSCI Singapore data stretches back to 1969. Since then, using monthly returns, stocks were up in 62 per cent of rolling 12-month periods, through June. Not bad.
They have been positive in 82 per cent of rolling five-year periods – even better. Rolling 10-year periods? A whopping 99 per cent were positive! No rolling period greater than 11 years has been negative. None!
Moreover, while it is tough to beat inflation with cash, stocks can – and do. Singapore stocks averaged 53 per cent over those five-year rolling periods and 129 per cent over the rolling 10-year stretches. Similar patterns hold for global stocks.

China reshuffles soy trade to counter local glut and US tensions
[BEIJING] China has long worried about its shortage of soybeans, solidifying its status as the world's biggest buyer to the benefit of farmers from the US to Brazil. But as its economy slackens, the country is quietly reshaping trade in the oilseed's products. The Asian nation is stepping up rare exports of soybean oil, as domestic consumers cut back on restaurant visits and rising global demand for biodiesel makes prices attractive enough to send it abroad. Meanwhile, China is testing deliveries of soybean meal from Argentina for the first time, a substitute for importing beans and crushing them into animal feed at home. Both shifts, while modest in volume, mark a departure from longstanding trade flows. They also include a means for the country to chip away at its need for American soybeans if the trade war between Beijing and Washington persists. China exported about 127,000 tonnes of soyoil in the first half of the year, exceeding full-year 2024 levels, according to customs data. The shipments are flowing to destinations including South Korea, Malaysia and India, where edible oil demand remains robust. The trend 'reflects a global supply-demand rebalancing in the vegetable oil market', Fu Bo, a senior analyst at Guotai Junan Futures, said in a note. 'The rising exports are the result of China needing soybean meal while other countries need soybean oil,' he said. Global soyoil markets remain supported by strong biofuel demand in the US, where about half of local production is used to produce renewable diesel. Meanwhile, domestic biofuel blending mandates and less competitive prices in South American nations such as Brazil and Argentina have limited additional supply. Commercial inventories of soyoil have surged 70 per cent since May to an elevated level of 1.12 million tonnes, according to Shanghai-based commodities consultancy Mysteel. Chinese crushers have kept run rates high to ensure there's enough soymeal for livestock rations, creating the unusual arbitrage opportunity of exporting surplus oil from a country better known for its imports. On the meal front, China is exploring a new supply channel from Argentina. Bunge Global recently sold at least two shipments of the high-protein feed ingredient to Chinese buyers. Beijing approved Argentine soymeal back in 2019, during trade hostilities with the first Trump administration, but purchases didn't materialise until now. Argentina's move to reduce export tariffs has improved the competitiveness of its meal. But the shipments also suggest that Chinese buyers are keen to hedge against uncertainty in US supplies as Beijing and Washington joust over trade once again. 'China has plenty of crush capacity,' said Arlan Suderman, chief commodities economist at StoneX Financial. 'But its recent purchases of Argentine soymeal send a statement to the US that it's willing to sacrifice that capacity to avoid buying US soybeans if Brazil can't fully meet its needs.' BLOOMBERG

Services trade to continue growing despite shifting trade landscape: HSBC global trade chief
[SINGAPORE] Even as tensions surrounding trade and geopolitics hog the headlines these days, there is still cause for optimism, said HSBC global head of global trade solutions Vivek Ramachandran. 'I'm cautiously optimistic,' he told The Business Times at the bank's Singapore office. 'I'm cautious because there are a lot of decisions. Lots of companies are in wait-and-watch mode, and companies are waiting for some certainty to unlock strategic decisions.' But the 'consensus view', said the London-based executive, is that the dust is expected to 'settle' before the end of the year. 'Assuming that happens, that gives me optimism because then we will see businesses move forward.' He added that businesses have proven that they will actually respond. 'They may not like the scenario, but they will find ways to respond and create opportunities,' he said. Sign Up Sign Up Fundamental change Still, there is no downplaying the changes that the world has seen since US President Donald Trump unleashed his 'Liberation Day' tariffs in April. Average tariff rates today are at about 20 per cent, compared with 2.5 per cent prior to early April. 'It is a big shift in terms of what the global trade landscape looks like,' said Ramachandran. For companies, this has brought at least two challenges: managing their working capital with the increased costs and figuring out who is in their supply chains. 'Supply chains have evolved over many decades with one objective – cost minimisation – and you can argue that they've done that incredibly effectively. That objective, at many times, has come at the expense of transparency,' he said. Supply chains are also no longer linear, he said, with multiple crossing supply chains and some goods crossing borders multiple times. 'Very few companies have visibility into that and, in fact, there's no technology that allows you to measure provenance.' In one of his previous roles, he said, he looked at the apparel industry in depth to trace a product from a cotton farm all the way through to its finish. His conclusion: 'It's almost impossible, because the yarn or cotton could take six months to a year and get blended across multiple farms.' This makes it a very difficult challenge for companies to truly understand which parts of their supply chains are affected by imports into the US or China. The past few months have shown companies that they need to put a lot more premium into knowing exactly who is in the supply chain, where the country of origin is and what sensitivities they have. Asked if the drive towards transparency would be beneficial in an era where sustainability-conscious consumers have become more demanding about where their products are sourced, Ramachandran said it depends. 'Some companies have benefited from lack of transparency further up the supply chain,' he said. 'If you are an intermediary who's sourcing, then in that case, you benefit from lack of transparency.' In any case, while some consumers care deeply about what they eat or wear, they simply do not have the capacity or appetite to really understand who is in the supply chain for more complicated products, such as cars. 'In many cases, actually it's not a consumer benefit as much as I think transparency will help with sustainability,' he said. 'It's much easier to embed practices in your supply chain if you know who you're dealing with,' he said, noting that there has been 'almost an exponential number' of new sustainable supply chain finance mandates rolled out. Growing trends At the same time, amid the fundamental changes the world is seeing, Ramachandran pointed to several themes that will remain. Among them, he expects services to continue to grow and become a larger share of trade over the next five to 10 years. 'If you look at most developed economies, services are 70 to 80 per cent of gross domestic product, but it's only 25 per cent of trade,' he said. Platform-based models and e-commerce are likely to continue growing, with many more companies cutting the middleman and going direct to consumers. This means that service-related solutions such as buy now, pay later solutions or embedded financing platforms will accelerate, changing the dynamics of the services industry. He also expects growing demand for trade assets from private credit or institutional investors, a development that could change the economics of trade. Additionally, with the International Chamber of Commerce being proactive with its digital standards initiative and a critical mass of countries trying to establish legal frameworks surrounding trade digitisation, Ramachandran said he is hopeful trade will become more digital with less paper in the next five years – a development that would 'unlock a huge amount of value'. Meanwhile, new trade corridors are also emerging, he noted, such as the one between China and Asean. China and the US have yet to reach a deal, but the potentially lower effective tariff rates that Asean is facing compared with China could accelerate the China+1 strategy. Asked if South-east Asia could again benefit from a US-China trade war – as was the case during Trump's first term – Ramachandran declined to be drawn into predicting who the winners and losers would be, calling it a 'fool's pursuit'. Instead, he said, companies should focus on building agility into their treasury and supply chains. 'It's much more important to focus on building flexibility... Anything we picked three months ago would have been wrong at this point in time and, in fact, it would have changed a few times by now,' he said. 'Our advice to companies is yes, you plan for multiple scenarios, but it's way more important that you build agility and flexibility into your decision process, into your capital allocation process and into your sourcing practices.' These disciplines, he said, would help them respond to a world that is 'changing quite a lot'. The core skills of agility and ability to change do not just apply to companies – but to countries as well. He cited Singapore as an example of embodying the mindset of adapting, innovating and not standing still – qualities that he believes could make Singapore a 'beneficiary' of the trade war, more than the fact that it is facing the lowest tariff rate. A pro-business environment, high liveability and good infrastructure are often cited as factors drawing companies to Singapore, but Ramachandran considers these table stakes, albeit at a high level. 'You're already competing in an elite league with very few economies that have all of that, but what keeps you fresh is not all of that,' he said. 'What keeps you fresh is an ability to reinvent the country and to adapt based on themes, and I think that, for me, is what gives confidence and also what makes Singapore unique.'
